Greatest retro kart racing game of all time?
>>
CTR, Diddy Kong's aight though.

Anybody else play Speed Freaks? Shit was really good, close to being a contender.
>>
>>3317146
CTR has a better multiplayer

DKR has a better single player

It's worth noting that CTR was literally a DKR clone because Naughty Dog rebuilt DKR levels in their engine to test it out
>>
>>3317146

original Mario Kart
>>
Would say CTR. Until I played MK8. That's a great game.

Isn't this applicable to pretty much this entire board?

I like to believe there are at least a few anons here that don't let pure nostalgia affect their opinions of videogames.
>>
>>3317327
GBA remake seemed more solid to me, but it's definitely up there with the best.

I did the core mechanics are top notch but the character designs are bland and uninspired as fuck. Had some cool tracks too.
>>
>>3317390
>I'm 19 and therefore have no fond memories of pre-2000 games

Seriously, I like games that I never played back in the day, but trying to shit on someone because their fondness for a game is enhanced by nostalgia just makes you sound like a bitter kid.

For multiplayer racing: CTR
For multiplayer battle mode: MK64

Mario Kart is probably the "best" in that it's solid and doesn't have many big flaws, but Diddy Kong Racing is my personal favorite. You can't beat the open world, the atmosphere and progression of it. Mario Kart is just a game you sit down and play for half an hour to an hour and then you're done. DKR takes you on an adventure. Worst part is probably that half the cast is filled with nobodies because they had to make up imaginary friends.

As for CTR, never liked it.
>>
Try the smurf kart racer.
>>
>>3318165
The bosses on DKR are such fucking cunts though. It ruins the single player for me.
>>
>>3318165
I agree with you anon. DKR is my personal favorite and doesn't have too many flaws other than it gets repetive at times. If the tracks were a little longer it would be perfect for racing. There isn't anything that lasts longer than 3-4 minutes.
>>
Not retro, but are any of CTR's "sequels" worth trying?
>>
Mario Kart Double Dash

Fuck CTR
>>
>>3318249
Not retro, kid.
>>
I think Diddy Kong Racing was technologically better thank MK and had a really cool single player mode that MK lacked and more features and playability in general. That said, Smurf Racing isn't one to overlook.
>>
>>3318249
Double Dash had shitty maps, though.
>>
>>3318249
Double Dash was fucking garbage. I never understood why people like it. Mari Kart 64 was better.
>>
>>3318529
>I never understood why people like it
Probably because they have better taste than you. It's your opinion though.
>>
>>3317379
You fail, never even played it once as a kid

Mario Kart 64 maps felt pretty empty and plain uninteresting.

I love power drift, but it's too hard for most people, not mario kart difficulty for sure
>>
>>3318839
>>3319727
Power Drift is the best game mentioned in this thread, but I don't consider it a "kart racer". No weapons, manual transmission, traditional cornering style, it's a regular racing game.
