How do you know when the piranha plants come up?

Two things
If you're near the tube, they won't come up again until you move 1 or 2 blocks away from the tube
And its probably 2 or 3 seconds, i don't remember, haven't played Super Mario Bros. since forever

It has to do with your current score. If the last digit in your score is a multiple of three, but the total score isn't divisible by the square root of 65535, then the piranha plant has only a 16/256 chance of emerging from the pipe.
