To what extent does /vr/ import?
Does anyone else here ever import games that were otherwise released in your region, only because the import version is actually more affordable? I find myself doing this more and more lately. It doesn't frankly matter to me since I have some rudimentary understanding of Japanese, although less text-intensive games tend to be in English regardless of region.
not retro but shadow tower abyss is pritty gud
For PCE and Sega Saturn, I mostly import because it's cheaper. Buying PCE has also got me to a play several Japanese language RPGs (action RPGs though) which I doubt I would have played otherwise. Stuff like Brandish, Popful Mail, and the like.
Often times buying western-released retro isn't worth it given price gouging, especially if games aren't text heavy to begin with.

Fan translation is better and you don't have to buy it at all.
I don't know if this counts, but I recently started getting into buying repro cartridges of fan translated games from AliExpress. So far I've gotten Seiken Densetsu 3 and Final Fantasy V.
I was a local region purist until I bought an NTSC-J Saturn. Holy shit, it really made me realize what fucking slobs most American children were. Cheaper and quickly shipped, too. Might import and deyellow a SFC and get rid of my SNES, actually. Looks way less Fisher Price.
