A few questions about pic related, for anyone who's interested.

1. How the hell do you do even decently in combat in this? If I just hold down the arrow key, I don't turn. If I tap it rapidly, I can't do so fast enough to turn to face the enemy that's attacking me. I get one, maybe two hits in, then blow up.

2. Is there a reason to prefer the MS-DOS version over the open source remake The Ur-Quan Masters, or vice-versa?
>>
1. The different ships have vastly different specifications. Your flagship starts off barebones and you shouldn't be using it to fight until you upgrade it specifically for combat.

2. I don't think so, probably not, no. I think that the original DOS version had a different soundtrack than UQM (I believe UQM uses the 3DO's music but I'm not 100% on that). Other than that I can't think of anything that isn't (subjectively) better or at least optionally changeable back to the same state as the DOS version

1. That makes sense, but I ran into one alien, gave a peaceful response, and it attacked anyway. Should I just start over and hope I'm luckier?

2. Cool. I'll use UQM then.

Don't forget that the DOS version doesn't have the superb voice acting
>>3293564
That was probably the Slylandro Probe, better get used to them because they're cunts to fight early on, stay away if it's a possibility
>>

Completely explore Sol before leaving. The spathi ship you'll find in sol is better to fight the probes with than the beginning flagship. Its secondary fire is a homing missile launched out the rear, and its range is fairly short so its still a challenge, but theyre good ships for probes if you get the hang of it.

Also you need to max out thrusters and turning jets on the flagship. I usually do this before buying any other modules, even temporarily scrapping the escort cruiser and ion gun to do so.

Thanks for all the tips. I really need to bust the manual out and read over it better. I don't even know how to navigate so I just kind of went in a straight line until something happened.
>>

I don't like the voice acting, but that might just be because I played the original so much as a kid that it will never not feel "off" to me. But like I said, you can turn it off; I was only trying to list things the DOS version has that UQM doesn't.

Don't feel bad about save scumming, especially if it's your first time. The game can be brutal if you don't know what you're doing, and there's little virtue in starting over from the beginning if you accidentally fuck yourself because you went into something not knowing how bad it was going to be. It's a fun game to learn things for yourself through experimentation.
>>

Be aware that you're on a time limit. It's not severe, but you can't just willy-nilly explore for too long. Always have an objective you're working on, with a specific destination in mind. When it's crunch time for the limit, you'll know(let's just say, stuff starts disappearing).

The Ur-Quan Masters 100%

Why?

It's free, and is basically the HD definitive version.

>If I just hold down the arrow key, I don't turn.
Hmm, I don't remember this. Have you got a gamepad or joystick to use (in conjuction with the keyboard, of course)? I know I was turning by just holding left or right on my D-pad.

I have a gamepad. I'll give that a shot, I guess. Thanks.
