It really does, every stage has at least 1 spot you can easily time travel usually near the robot transporter in the past.

The game rewards exploration, and even if you do just want to do a "Gotta go fast" run through the game you can still get the good ending as long as your able to get 50 rings and beat the special stages.

Sonic 1 just has an artistic and visual style that I really love. Only Sonic CD really comes close to matching the same style, although I prefer Sonic 1 because it's a shorter game and I can't always be fucked with time travel shit.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles still has a very good, albeit completely different audio/visual style. It's not as good as Sonic 1, though. Sonic 2 is my least favourite. Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin and Casino Night look and sound great, but the other stages are the weakest in the series in my opinion.

It's nostalgia goggles basically. Too many memories playing it and I loved the wacky 90's style backgrounds. All in all, i know it's average if not mediocre.
