Well, it originally came with Starfox 64 and everytime you were hit, it would rumble. That was pretty neat.
Apart from that it works like vibration in every other (newer) game.

Does it work as well on games like rogue squadron? I'm thoroughly going through my collection and testing it on each one, and I'll also be picking up some more n64 titles tomorrow.

Waverace 64 had a re-release in japan with rumble pack support. Might want to try to find it.

It's nothing super amazing but its the only way for us in this world to get any sort of "feedback" from the virtual world in the game. Mostly depends on the implementation, some devs are lazy with it.

I never found it particularly jarring. The N64's version was a bit primitive, but newer rumble mechanisms are much more precise. The slight bump that modern controllers can give you is great, not so much for immersion, but rather haptic feedback.

Not retro, but I was really impressed with just how gentle the Gamecube rumble was. You can tiptoe around in Smash Bros, and you get just the slightest tap from within the controller. You wouldn't even notice it if you weren't feeling for it.

Believe it or not, my favorite use of vibration in any game is Forza 6 on Xbone. The controller has vibrating triggers, and they'll vibrate depending on how the wheels on your car are behaving. If you slam the brakes, the left trigger vibrates to signal wheel lock, and if you slam the gas, the right one vibrates to signal wheel spin. It's a subtle but actually pretty useful addition.

Probably my main complaint as well. Just not enough variety in general. But like I said, I still appreciate the game.
