Never played any 'Age of' game, which is the best?
You can go straight to 2 + the Conquerors exp pack.

You posted it.

Better than 3 or Mythology?
>>3271146
Yes.
Start with 1 and its addon. The plot in 2 builds up on those events.
>>3271146
yes by far

humm, the thing is some will say that aoe3 is a new paradigm and that you have to let go of your aoe2 pre conpceptions to get into aoe3
you have to git gud with the colony system to really ennjoy aoe3

huh not really, that is, if you really really wanna be thorough, start with a book about cosmology, or at least some game with dinossaurs
the first Command & Conquer, the first Age of Empires, and other early RTS not worthy of mention, simply lack a lot of interface/input shortcuts that really annoy and unnecessarily slow you.
but if OP never played other modern RTS like C&C Tiberium Sun, Homerworld, SC Broodwars, or if he's not a faggot, he might as well start at aoe1 just to enjoy its single player campaign
but to pass some time in the multiplayer, one should just go to aoe2 conquerors
and for that use voobly.com
there's also a few dozen stubburn fellows that hang in GameRangerand im sure some faggot will even suggest the steam (*splits*) version, but that's just dumbif you're going to buy it via steam because ou cant wait for the shippping of an used copy, and youre too shy to pirate an abbandonware that microsoft came back to after leaving patron for a decade without zone.com... well fisrt fuck you, and second, you can still use game ranger and voobly with your version, just apply the compat patch: http://aoccs.net/

i forgot to addthere is no HD version, its just a name for the steam version, it only means new sprites for rocks, water, and fire and any screen resolution, which players playing via gameranger/voobly have been doing for a long time already with aoe2 UserPatch (it comes integrated in voobly)
and for al things AoE 1/2/M/3 heavengames.com
AoE2 for casual fun, but 3 is best if you want to play online. Mythology isn't very good, and I've never played 1

Such as? They even added things like the idle villager button with a patch.

i tried not long ago replaying multi with a friend aoe1 and c&c, now im not sure which but several things i took for granted on conquerors and i quickly found that nostalgia had me fooled, or perhaps i just became spoiled, lemme see what i can remember
-villager building resource dropzone doesnt automaticcaly start picking said resource after,
-waypoint
-double press on 2 doent center map on group 2
-no gates
- ctrl or shift to select only or remove only, a type of unit from an assorted selection
- sfhit 1 2 3.. to merge groups
did it had already:
double click to select all same type?
i recall it was mostly villagers and boats that had something lacking that annoyed me

AoE 2 is basically an upgraded AoE 1, and AoE 3 isn't as addicting as 2, IMHO.
Also, don't forget to install the Conquerors and Forgotten Empires expansions.

>AoE 2 is basically an upgraded AoE 1
too bad they didn't carry over all the assets and units to AoE2 so you could play AoE1 on a better base game
>>3272507
Doesn't that also apply to AoK? Obviously it's among the most advanced retro RTS because it straddles the borderline but the genre didn't stop there.
Starcraft has the best Singleplayer
AOE2 has the best multiplayer
deal with it

play all of them in order. the first aone is a little slow in comparison to new things or to starcarft but is fun and youre abble to learn the process if youre new to these games.
athe second one in my opinion is the best because of historical background, ia intelligence, variety of units and gamaeplay overall
athe thrid one is not great, is way too easy and loosesa the mathematic shit to grow fast but steady the other two had.
