Games like Warlords 2? I used to play one back in 1994-95 but can't for the life of me remember the name. It was very similar but the units were different.
I remember capturing certain cities and using them to build highly defensive bug/beetle-like units. If they were defending a city it was really hard to take it. It's possible they were Warlords 2 spiders since it was over 20 years ago and I can't remember much else.

Love this game but it plays like absolute shit on Archive.org. A shame because it's a great one.

Master of Magic?

No but I played that too. Awesome game. I really wish they'd remake it. Great combination of Civilization and Magic: The Gathering.
No this one I had in mind was so close to Warlords 2 that it might actually BE Warlords 2 and my memory from 20 years ago is being faulty (but wtf, it was 20 years ago right?) I just remember there being more units than what I'm seeing when I play it now but I might be wrong on that.
I distinctly remember kicking the shit out of my friends with these bug/beetle-like units that may have been the game's spiders. They have a good defense bonus in cities and these units used to make me almost invulnerable.
There were a few games like this one back then though.

Warlords... 3?
There's also the very first Warlords game. Apparently it has only one scenario (Kingdom of Illuria), unlike WL2 where you get to choose the campaign, or even make your own if you have the scenario builder.
I only played a bit of WL2 so don't know all the differences between these versions.

Forgot to mention: the first Warlords game was the only one ever ported to Amiga.
I'll post some more similar Amiga game pics, since I happen to collect that stuff. I'm pretty sure most of these had DOS version as well.

I played that on the Sega Genesis. Fun game.
A lot of these other games I've never heard of but wish I had.
I think my next game similar to these will be HoMM 3. I hear it's the best of the series.
I also hear Battle for Wesnoth is goof, but what I value the most in these kinds of games is a RANDOM MAP option which HoMM 3 has. Random maps keep me playing; static maps make me bored after a while.
