>Descent 1 and 2 you have a limited number of lives which can be increased through score or pickups. Death drops all your gear, so you need to be able to get back to where you died and risk fighting whatever killed you to retrieve it. Progress through game allows you to restart missions with no gear and a fixed number of lives in case you run out of lives completely.
>Descent 3 has no lives system, but death respawns you with the level in the same state as when you died, so all progress is preserved. Essentially someone with Polygon reviewer skill levels could still beat the game on insane by slowly chipping away at enemies, dying, respawning and continuing.

Why oh why did someone think this change was a good idea? There is no risk at all now.

Arcade SHMUPs can have infinite continues and you just collect back the power ups left on screen.
Just that you died and have to go back is enough punishment and humiliation.

This isn't an arcade SHMUP, it's a 6DOF FPS in the same series as games that DIDN'T fuck this up.

Holy shit you dense idiot. The whole point is that you have no option to make Descent 3 'Hard' since it's impossible to lose. Saves or no. Iron man or no.

The game is impossible to lose. Don't you get that? You cannot game over. You cannot die and have to restart the level.

I can play Doom on Nightmare! without saving and it's a legit challenge to beat. Descent 3 offers no challenge, since you just get respawned with enemies that you killed staying dead.

Hmm, guess I never had problems with lives. Since I generally was able to get through the levels just fine with shields and energy being supplied. Never knew it had an actual reset.

Your ship is perfectly capable with just the stock lasers even late in the game. Most of the risk is gone once you know what's waiting for you.

definitively not the same thing. When i was a kid, playing descent 1 was fucking difficult. aiming, recolecting, fucking diying and rerecolecting the things with the dudes again there.

it is a great game nad difficult indeed in the hardest levels
