That's your key word. Most kids are idiots and find humor in juvenile things, like naming their rival DICKS. There's no deep meaning to any of it except that kids find these things funny. For adults who are aware that they'll be playing an RPG for 50 hours, they know that they'll get tired of it sooner rather than later.

These days I usually go with the canon option if available without opening the manual, otherwise I make something up on my own, although I'm a bit too old to get a chuckle out of playing a character called HITLER.

I always name myself the MC, more immersive to me. Absolutely essential in games that have decision making/branching paths, because how else am I supposed to make my choice if I'm not inserting myself into the situation? Otherwise I'd probably just look up a guide for the best decision to make at such dialogue exchanges, but that's fucking lame to do.

I do this too but only for games when the MC has a lot of personality. If it's a silent character like the warriors of light I'll just self insert and name the other characters after my friends. It was fun going on fantasy adventures with my schoolfriends.

It really adds some flavor to the text, especially since I've played the games already

To be honest, I never understood why I have the choice to name my character when the manual directly tells what his name is. After I first played FF VI, I couldn't read any articles or guides about the game since I didn't understand which name refers to which hero, because I've given them unique names. Since then, I just press ok when the game asks me for a name.
