Go to Parapa Palace and practice at blocking the first ironknuckle's attacks, without trying to attack him. After you can do this consistently without getting hit, you can try to attack at the same time. You'll get to the point where you're able to notice his sword at the split second where he raises it before stabbing it forward, and you'll be able to react accordingly. Repeat if necessary for the red and blue ironknuckles.

At this point I'm even able to do it on the NES Classics GBA version, despite the tiny screen.

This doesn't work for birdknights. It also doesn't work for the boss of the island palace, as he goes offscreen. You'll still have to do the jumping trick for him.

But you'll soon be at the point where you're backing ironknuckles into corners and killing them without taking a hit, or knocking them of edges because they've run out of ground to retreat to. After them giving you so much hell early on, it's extremely satisfying to be able to do that.

I think having a high HP self-recovering enemy early in the game worked really well as a way to teach you to use some strategy. It both shows you examples (accumulative attacks) and offers enough resistance to force you to try new things.

Things like these is why I remember Gen 2 so fondly.

I remember I put my HM slave first, and used FLASH on Milktank every turn it could survive. I managed to resist just enough to get the "can't get Milktank accuracy any lower" message. Then, I used my starter, which had the best offensive.

You could go this route, but the jump/attack is far more effective. Practice fighting them normally, yes, but I disagree that playing their game is the way to go. There are only two points in the game that require you fighting the enemies without jumping, one being against a blue Iron Knuckle at the Island palace, and the other is much later in the Ocean palace.

With the Iron Eagles, for the blue ones that are required to beat the Great Palace, you can just hang at the top of the blocks and let him run in to your sword. The red ones are easy enough to best with the up thrust.

Laying a haymaker of jump attacks eliminates a lot of tedious fighting with them. But you do need to practice being fast enough to react to enemy cues.

Part of why this game is so good is how different each playthrough could go. For instance, the very first time I went through the west wing key was in that box in the living room, while most of the times after that it wasn't. Just last year I played it with my girlfriend and couldn't find the idol. I knew the game like the back of my hand so I was really confused, until I clicked the curtain in the piano room and found the rod. Had no idea there was another item that could take the idol's place even after a decade and over a dozen playthroughs.

Red Arremer is an asshole and whoever programmed him should be killed on sight.

Surprisingly enough, the torch weapon actually works a bit better on this type of enemy only for the reason that the arc of the shot has a higher chance of hitting him if he divebombs you. Perhaps the only real practical use for that torch.

Yeah, games usually have Event Flags in them when you get a plot item or perform a certain action, another may possibly replace it, completely changing the possible playthrough in some cases.

Like in Lufia 2, if you are looking for dragon eggs and the chest that it's supposed to go through hasn't been opened, the egg will move to another chest instead.
