So, what was the thought process of Midway when they decided to make UMK3 for SNES/Genesis, MK Trilogy for PSX/N64, and then give the Saturn both? How does that make sense?
>>
The Saturn just didn't make sense in general
>>
>>3248124
MK is huge in Japan so was Saturn, it's just simple logic
>>
Saturn could run UMK3
Remember PSX and N64 2D hardware was pretty weak
>>
>>3248137
But....PSX has MK Trilogy which has more stages and characters than UMK3.

N64 version did actually cut content that was in the PSX/Saturn versions.

>MK is huge in Japan

Mario Kart maybe, not mortal kombat
>>
>>3248143
Trilogy has cut down animation frames and reduced background layers. I like it but it's definitely less arcade accurate than UMK3
>>
>>3248124
Bernie Stolar (when he was at Sony) made a deal so PS1 would be the only 32-bit system to get MK3. Sega allegedly responded to this by getting UMK3.
>>
>>3248131
Sega doesn't make sense in general.
>>
>>3248153
And smaller sprite sizes too.
>>
Wonder how butthurt Sega was to get UMK3 while Sony got MKT.
>>
>>3251448
Commercially it hurt, but UMK3s the better game, so Saturn owners win.
>>
>>3251462
And then Saturn owners won again when they did finally get Trilogy, while PS1 and N64 owners got Mythologies.
>>
>>3253840
Wonder how a MK4 Saturn would have turned out.
>>
>>3248124
What was the thought process of Midway when they released a version of MK 2 on the Saturn that has to stop to load moves in the middle of a fight.

Shake down their fans for a few shekels, obviously.
>>
>>3255118
>stop to load moves in the middle of a fight.

Never played that version but I thought it stopped only for Shang Tsung when he morphed into someone other than the opponent.

Does it pause for fireballs or something similar?
>>
>>3255131
I haven't played it enough to figure it out the specifics (because its awful), but yes, yes it does. Probably it has to load the first time you use a specific special in a round.

Midway didn't publish Saturn MK2. Acclaim had the rights for MK2 console release and as their expiration was coming up, they quickly threw in a Saturn MK2 port for one last milk.
>>
Shitty pre-determined combos killed the genre. Thanks Killer Instinct!
>>
>>3255441
All Nintendo's fault.
>>
>>3255879
You mean Rare.
>>
>>3255441
I hate the fact they kept them for all the games after MK3.
>>
>>3248124
MK3 was bought by Sony to be PSX exclusive; or rather, to not have a Saturn port. Sega retaliated by getting the first and best release of UMK3 on the Saturn (it was pretty popular at the time, and got no PSX version), then Sony retaliated by getting a timed exclusive MK Trilogy (didn't come out on the Saturn until a year).

It was a back and forth penis waving contest between Sony and Sega, basically.

16-bit ports happened inbetween and weren't considered important by either company.
>>
>>3255145
>>3255138
I played MK2 on Saturn a few months ago, and no, it doesn't stop for special moves, it only stops loading for Shang Tsung morphs. And there is an option there to limit his morphs to opponent only, or disabling it altogether, which fixes that problem.
>>
>>3257540
Well, I don't know what to say. I just booted it up on hardware to test. It definitely pauses the first time an enemy uses a special move in a battle.

Load times are noticeable. Missing animation frames are noticeable (Baraka would just idle with his claws out after doing a fatality instead of going to victory stance). Missing announcer clips are noticeable. Music is inexcusably weak for a CD game.

Its not unplayable, but for anyone who's played MK 2 a substantial amount, its pretty gimped.
>>
>>3257538
I could have sworn MKT started on N64 but the PSX version came priority because the N64 could handle the game (it was meant to be a launch title).
>>
>>3259515
Never seen that story before.

Was MK trilogy any good on Saturn?
>>
>>3262482
It's the same as the PSX Greatest Hits version which fixed all the bugs.
>>
>>3248124
This is why UMK3 wasn't on PSX:

no
>>
>>3257540
I'm guessing he was getting it mixed up with the PS1 port, which was based off of the Saturn port, and had to load EVERYTHING.

It was a mess.
>>
>>3263881
What's so bad about it?
>>
>>3259515
>I could have sworn MKT started on N64 but the PSX version came priority because the N64 could handle the game (it was meant to be a launch title).

Apparently MKT was first on the Playstation because once the Sega exclusivity was over, and they started porting UMK3 to Playstation, they thought "whoah, we have a lot of storage here on the disc, what else can we add?". And then turned UMK3 into MKT.
>>
>>3257979
>Music is inexcusably weak for a CD game.

It was a PC port iirc and they just used the machines MIDI capabilities, but never bothered using a good soundfont. That's why it sounds like some kind of Genesis soundtrack.

Honestly if they used a good soundfont it would've had the best music out of all ports, even better than if it used CD Audio since they could loop the tunes correctly which you can't with CDDA.
>>
>>3264329
Not him, but I found it to be buggy.
>>
>>3264345
But...the Saturn uses CD too?

Wasn't there plans to release a MK1+2 compilation on PlayStation and Saturn? I remember seeing a few ads for it on magazines.
>>
>>3265079
Dunno about PlayStation, but there were magazine ads for a Saturn MK1+2 pack. For whatever reason Acclaim decided to ditch MK1 and release 2 standalone instead.

AFAIK the only releases that happened of the MK1+2 pack were on Game Boy and PC, which were just their respective previously released ports in one CD/cart.
>>
>>3265332
and PlayStation's MK2 was a Japan exclusive.
>>
>>3265332
Why would you ever play MK1 on gameboy when the vastly superior 2 is available?
>>
>>3265070
Yeah, Japanese dont wanna play a game that has an East-Asian protagonist and East-Asian antagonist. Not white enough for them
>>
>>3267634
Why would you ever play Mortal Kombat on Game Boy?
>>
Most of the old MK console ports are garbage. The PC had the only good ports. MK3 for PC was basically identical to the arcade because PCs had mountains of RAM compared to what the PS and Saturn had, and the PC's VGA resolution was higher than what the original arcade hardware ran on.

Everything else was too limited by hardware (anything on SNES or Genesis) or had loading times that were so bad that they had to include the option to limit Shang Tsung's morphs in order to make the game bearable.
>>
>>3267915
MK2 and MK3 on SNES were actually good ports, they were just kind of ugly.
>>
>>3248124
stand by the fact that snes mk2 is the best console version
>>
>>3248124
the same way you see PS3 games ported to PS4

>>3248134
man if only i could see kouhatsu channel holding UMK3 tournies

>>3262482
the only acceptable MKT is N64 version
can be considered the best but it is only available in N64
other ports are buggy

MK 2 is easily the best retro port.

I guess the DOS port is technically better, but I didn't know anyone (and I mean anyone) who had a PC controller that wasn't complete shit back in the day.

Saturn version is a poor PC port with crap music, but otherwise it is okay, albeit with loading times.

PC and 32x ports are both better than SNES MK2.
