It was obviously the 32x bullshit. Sega CD was decent and 32x is honestly a decent piece of hardware too. If SoJ had gotten their heads out of their asses and supported 32xCD with their full developer base they could have gotten a much more significant jump on PlayStation considering PlayStation is essentially just SNES CD.

In much the same way the 32xCD combo dramatically increases the power of the Genesis. Not to Playstation levels of course but as the failure of the N64 proves, it's not all about power.

But we're derailing here. The answer to OP's question is that it was absolutely the 32x that killed add-ons and it was because of how SoJ basically killed it to make space for Saturn when in reality most of Saturn's most successful games could have been done on 32xCD and released earlier.

The Saturn had zero digit market penetration before it was released. SoJ should have got behind 32x and repackaged the entire 32xCD as a single console in the Saturn form factor and marketed it as such - years before Playstation and not only with next-gen games at an unbeatable price (by the time it needed to compete) but also with the entire enormous pre-existing Genesis library thanks to backward compatibility.

I have to admit I thought the karaoke addon was literally a toaster until I clicked the thumbnail.

Biggest issue with Mega CD and 32X is that they were poorly integrated on a hardware level.

Mega CD basically has to provide a second, faster 68000 because the one on-board the Mega Drive just wasn't fast enough. Meanwhile the original 68000 sits idle when you run Mega CD game. This is the kind of wasteful extra costs that harmed the add-on by keeping it at a high price.

While the 32X basically uses the Mega Drive console as a power supply and little more.

It's not really the total fault of the hardware companies, sometimes it's hard to know where the future lies.

But the best add-ons are minor inoffensive things like the N64 Expansion Pak.

It does use the console for some 2D graphics. Usually backdrops, HUDs and such. You can see what's being handled by the console or the 32X by just not using the video passthrough cable.

All that sega needs is a mega modem.
