Hey, /vr/. A family member recently gave me a huge CD-case filled with retro games (mostly shovelware unfortunately). A bunch of them are for Windows 98 and 95, which wont work on Windows 10.

Pic related, this is one of the games I want to play, but can't because it's only for Windows 98-95. Any way to get this running on like VMWare or something?

The games themselves aren't the problem, the problem is that the installer program is 16-bit and won't run on 64-bit Windows.
>>
>>3232631
I never said that the games themselves were the problem, I was asking simply what method I could use to run them.
>>
>>3232640
You just did.

>A bunch of them are for Windows 98 and 95, which wont work on Windows 10

You said the games won't work when it's the installer that doesn't work.
>>
>>3232640
You'd have to use some other method to extract the files if you can't use the included installer. If you ask on the Vogons forum, they might be able to help.
>>

...what? lol download it
>>
>>3232615
Ignore this guy btw. Windows 9x runs really poorly in DOSBox.
>>
Actually I'm not even sure how you'd install 98 in DOSBox in the first place because of how the setup works.

>boot startup floppy
>insert installation CD
>format/partition hard disk
>run setup program

I don't think DOSBox has the infrastructure to do all this stuff. Also where would you put a 98 installation that it won't conflict with Windows 8 or whatever is on your PC.
>>
>>3232706
You can mount an HDD image, but Win9x still runs very bad.

>>

DOSbox can set whatever directory you want as the root directory, then Windows will install in a subdirectory of that. It's the hardware drivers that will likely be the real problem. That's why I have a retro PC.
>>
>>3232716
I know you can torrent it, dumbass. Obviously I don't want to torrent it since I'm already in deep shit, legal-wise.
>>
>>3232719
Windows 9x relies too much on low-level hardware access and other quirks to work properly on DOSBox. You can't really run that shit without real late 90s-early 2000s iron.
>>

Install a 32bit version of Windows XP on VMWare or Virtualbox.

As long as it's a 2D game, it should run fine. 3D might work, but don't get your hopes up.

DOSBox is optimised for games; it performs poorly when trying to run an OS or any other non-game rubbish.
>>
>>3234168
>optimised for games
how so?
>>
>>3234175
You'd have to ask them on Vogons for the specifics, but it comes up any time someone mentions trying to run an old application in DOSBox.
>>
>>3234195
sounds more like it's developed by increasing compatibility to games. So any time an non-game application comes up it may or may not use DOS aspects that are just not well developed in DOSBox.
I just tend to listen up when someone says "optimised", because that means specific changes to a generic implementation that favors one aspects or another. If functions are simply missing or not well maintained, that's not optimisation, that's simply bias
>>
>>3234175
I'm pretty sure the creator of DOSBox created it with mainly DOS games in mind.
>>
>>3234939
and? At the end of the day it emulates large parts of a DOS environment with a bunch of multimedia peripherals. Why should applications not be able to use that environment?
>>
>>3234950
In theory they could, but DOSBox doesn't even emulate a lot of features such as the Ctrl-Break vector or printer output and the coding team apparently have no interest in adding them. They just tell people on Vogons to use a custom build or edit the source code yourself if you want that shit.
>>
>>3236051
It annoys me because VICE for example emulates almost all important Commodore hardware features other than perhaps the user port (bit useless for emulation) and it does support printer output, so why is it too much to ask for DOSBox to include Ctrl-Break support? Have you ever tried using QBASIC in DOSBox and been frustrated at how you can't bail out of a program because Ctrl-Break doesn't work?
>>
>>3232676
usually even if you do get past the installer program or find a pirated rared up preinstall the games themselves have problems as well. Also you are just being a nitpicking autist.
>>
I think trying to emulate a multitasking Windows environment would be extremely CPU-intensive. Emulating protected mode 32-bit DOS games is one of the more CPU-intensive things you can do on DOSBox and that's still a single tasking environment without any background processes going on.
>>
>>3232856

>>
>>3236068
how long are you going to try to drag this shitty troll attempt on for? It's a well known fact that many games made for older versions of windows have problems running in modern windows even with compatibility settings.
>>
>>3236059
This was one of the many lame excuses I heard on Vogons.

"DOSBox development is slowing unfortunately because a lot of us are getting in our 30s now and have kids and responsibilities, but younger guys didn't grow up with DOS so it's hard to convince them to take over the workload from us."
>>
>>3236089
dear lord, I bet they are just assuming that and not even reaching out to new devs, also, even if what they are claim about younger devs is true, there are plenty of people in their 30s that don't have that sort of responsibility. They probably are just looking for any excuse they can to not give over the project because they are afraid that other people will "not care about DOS as much as they do". I have seen so many projects die just because the developers thought that no one had the passion for x thing that they did. I'd hate for DOSBox to go down that path as well, but maybe in the wake some one will make something better.

>readingcomprehension
Who said they couldn't? He's saying it's optimized for gaming. In certain cases I know this to be a fact. You don't need the sort of video support they've worked long and hard at to run lotus123.
>>
>>3236239
See >>3236051
>>
>>3236065
Multitasking on its own is not particularly stressful to the CPU. In a Windows environment most of the tasks are idling anyway. A single protected mode game can push the VM harder than a dozen productivity tools in Windows
>>
>>3236239
>You don't need the sort of video support they've worked long and hard at to run lotus123.
Has this sort of video support HURT the ability to run Lotus 1-2-3? Optimization is always at the expense of something. I have no doubt the features DOSBox offers are used primarily by games, that's just the kind of program they support. I have doubts that they sacrificed features to get games running
>>
>>3232856
windows 10 is fine

Nice try Microshill
>>
>>3236473
Probably. And I looked into what >>3236051 said and can confirm it's true. So yes. 100% confirmed dosbox is optimized for gaming at the expense of other applications.
>>

>>
>>3236679
Most people throw out their old PCs when they get a new one, esp. when space is at a premium where they live.

The only readily accessible DOS-ready PCs I have is a Toshiba 430CDT laptop with no floppy drive and a screen that's flaking out. I also have a late-1999 Compaq tower with a mobo that has no ISA slots and no HDD and used to run WinXP when it was my main PC.
>>
I have a Dell Optiplex P133, but it doesn't have a working hard disk.
>>
>>3236619
>>3236051 only said some features are not implemented, which is fine. What features have been implemented in such a way that they work better for games, but may break applications? Not talking about missing features, features where the devs had the choice to go "generic" or "for games" and went with the latter, knowing it will break shit
>>
>>3237170
then that's a 'you' problem, doesn't really mean Windows 10 is bad as a whole, it just means you specifically are having problems with it.
>>
>>3236648
Where the hell are you looking? Even the biggest jews on eBay price Windows 98 machines (which would mostly be Pentium II and III) at $150 max. They don't even sell for that, usually it's $30-60.

Now if you were talking about good working 486 machines then I would believe you. Those things are approaching Neo-Geo tier prices.

Yes, that's what *you* would pay. But they really are getting up there in price now. And I expect the same to happen to later 90s PCs very soon.

The majority of them have been recycled by e-waste operations by now. They never have had quite as much appeal as retro consoles so there wasn't as many people who realized they were worth anything and trying to save them. Games had more nostalgic appeal while old computers were mostly seen as obsolete appliances and "junk".
>>
>>3239089
It always seemed to me that a lot of the 8-bit home computers have been better preserved and not as many of them junked as PCs.
>>
You guys are forgetting something. A lot of 286/386/486 PCs had those blue barrel batteries that leak all over the motherboard and destroy them. This is probably one reason for the lack of surviving examples.

They're more like a console; PCs have rarely had the passionate, almost cult-like following of the Apple II and Commodore 64. Too often they've just been perceived as a piece of office equipment.
>>

>>
>>3240441
I'm pretty sure my Mac 512 I recently got off Ebay can't run DOS.
>>
>>3240441
Sure, every PC with an x86 Intel CPU made to this day can run DOS. The problem is tracking down compatible hardware, Like a mobo with ISA slots, video cards that support VESA standards (not many cards support this), SB-compatible audio (barely any on-board audio can do it), and possible issues related to the BIOS. This means at best you could only simple text-mode stuff, or have limited or no audio.
>>
>>3240464
>Sure, every PC with an x86 Intel CPU made to this day can run DOS
Not really no since recent PCs have replaced the old-style BIOS with UEFI.
>>
>>3240449
Wrong! Some company made a little add-on that allowed for IBM PC compatibility :D
>>
>>3232589
Does running in compatibility mode not working?

If not set up VM machine its literally a 3 step wizard and play anything you want.
>>
>>3232589
VMWare has the best support for 95/98, as they used to actively support it back when it was a relevant OS. Get VMware player (free download with a VMware account), and make sure you install the guest addons after installing 98 SE. Make sure it is 98 SE for best compatibility. You can download a Windows 98 SE ISO from the internet - it's easy to find with a Google search.

Once you have the 98SE system up and running, you'll need to find the updates for it. These are important to fix stability issues and to add required features (often DirectX stuff). I'm not sure if Microsoft still makes these available, but I'm sure you can find an "update pack" on the internet if you Google it.
