Favorites are Zork, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Bureaucracy
Didn't play many of these, but I had a good time playing Pirate Adventure on the Atari 800 with my younger brother when we were kids.
Never finished Adventureland because it was a lot harder.
Know anywhere where I can download Zork code in C++?

Why do you need this?
Maybe you need Z-Machine?
What's one where a guide is not obligatory

If you're the type of person to say a guide is "obligatory," then probably none of them, because if you have an attitude about it you'll always find something to be frustrated by.
I've beaten a few old Infocom games without any hints: Infidel, Trinity, and Suspended (which is not as hard as it is reputed to be).
Wishbringer was designed to be newbie-friendly(er). Try that one.
There are also tons of casual modern ones if that's your style.
