You'll want avoid redundancy when you choose their various dark/light paths (you'll want light Duran, probably, because elemental sabers AND angela is a bit overkill)

I'd avoid shopping at the night bazaar in Beyzel(?). It essentially gives you the spells of ALL the characters which can easily break the game and make your class choices far less meaningful.

The battles are pretty simple, yeah. There's no like... level 6 weapon charging like in secret of mana.

So you mean if I choose light Duran the game will become more balanced?

Usually these kind of stuff are really expensive, no? But yeah I don't want to break the game so I'll avoid it.

If you choose dark duran, he gains the ability to make his weapon fire/ice/etc element, so the party gains elemental attacks. Which... is pretty much was Angela does already. In terms of utility, your party is a little more balance, but there's still some small merit to Dark Duran (MOAR DAMAGE)

And, yeah, in most games those items are expensive. But not here. Like... you gain items that'll cast Ice Saber so you don't need to mess with Dark Duran, e.g.

First real boss fight is probably after you have all three party members and you fight the robots on the bridge.

Already done, even though I barely won. Basically Angela's magic saved my ass. I guess I was a bit underleved.

I did Light Duran. Went pretty welll. Then again my team had Kevin and Kevin is quite literally broken thanks to a variety of benficial bugs associated with him.

Also, almost every shield is useless thanks to bugs.

Never ever use level 2 or 3 techs against those enemies that are basically evil versions of the playable characters like werewolves, ninjas, knights, etc..

They immediately counter them with techs of their own. Some bosses do it as well, so if you feel like you get nuked down you might want to disable higher level techs for at least that fight.

Your party doesn't matter on your first blind playthrough.

It's actually better if you don't check guides on your first playthrough.

It's an easy game, which is why the guy above said you have to put in your own artificial difficulty.

The black market pretty much breaks the game and makes some of the characters obsolete.

You can beat the game with basically any party but you might want to know that Duran and Angela don't really synergize with each other gameplay wise since the game doesn't particularly encourage the mix of physical/magic users in the same party.

Of course there's more to character selection than power levels I suppose - you might have picked them anyway because their stories are tied.
