I loved 7, first one I played. Eagerly awaited 8, and didn't like it too much. I know people complain about 7, but it's definitely the coolest final fantasy. 8 was just so lame; Squall even pissed me off at ten years old. Then the stats mechanics are weird and don't quite work well enough IMO. On the other hand, it's really satisfying collecting things in the game - refining magic, getting Tonberry & Cactuar, for example. Excellent music, of course. The graphics were great for the time.

So it's a bit of a mixed bag. The Spoony Experiment review on YouTube says all you need to hear about the badness, but it's a better game than he makes out.

I wonder how many kids bought it thinking it was a sequel to FFVII.

Why people dislike the junction system? FFVIII was probably the only FF where I cared about stats, elemental defenses and added statuses because it was the only one I could customize it by myself.

It added a whole new depth to the game.

the gameplay is generally bad, and some areas are bland/boring, but the music is top-tier and the story really gets you. The cinematics were unbelievable at the time.

I had seen a friend of a friend play ff6 and ff7 at birthday parties, but this was my first experience with a ff game; I played it on the pizza hut demo disk along with medieval and TR3. It was unlike anything I had played before and I was intrigued. Said friends talked me out of getting it, and convinced me to get 7, which I did and loved, but I eventually got 8 and loved it too.
