Is the PSX version really bad compared to others?

It's not the same game. Large portions of levels were taken out. The N64 was well-suited for 3D platformers, on PS with a few exceptions they look like ass. It was going to be an N64 exclusive at first and it shows.

It was ported to n64 after the initial design was for pc, the textures and map sizes were all shrunk for that console, the dreamcast version restored the original textures and is largely considered to be the best version of the game.

No, that's actually how it is. The N64 version is a little darker in Ly's prison room.

I'm guess that's because the N64 version has a more complete version of the lighting system while the Playstation version is simplified.

But the difference in polygon complexity is pretty obvious as it is.
