I only had Sonic Triple Trouble and Tails Adventure, it was alright. I had an ac adapter so I didn't have to waste batteries
>>
If you mod it for video out it's a great little Master System.
>>
Even though the library is much much smaller than even the original Game Boy, there are a lot of games worth playing in it. The problem is that besides emulation there is no other way to play Game Gear games other than on an actual Game Gear - no "super game gear", no back/cross compatibility unlike many other Sega systems.

Plus the Game Gear itself is backward compatible with Master System using a simple pin converter which gave it a pretty solid library back in the day. It was actually the battery consumption that kept me from really using it at the time. I was a TurboExpress guy
>>
It has alright games.
As a kid I had Sonic Chaos, Deep Duck Trouble (Donald game), Land of illusion, Lion King... I mostly had Disney games because my mom and sisters are big disney fans.

Lion King was so-so, Sonic Chaos was decent but not as good as the Genesis games, still and OK platformer.
Deep Duck Trouble and Land of illusion are probably the best ones I had. Solid game design, graphics and gameplay. It was back when Sega did good games with Disney licenses. (Lion King was by Virgin).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4HsAsMy1D8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p36FrWUOFA

Then you have 8-bit ports of games like Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Columns, even stuff like Dynamite Headdy (haven't played the GG version so I don't know if it's remotely as good as the Genesis version).

The battery life was indeed shit.

It was mostly the novelty of having a color portable system. Playing Mortal Kombat II on the go in 1994 was RAD.
Nowadays it probably doesn't have that much value outside of collectors or Sega fans and probably you're better off playing the Master System versions of the games, or just emulating them on PSP or something.
There's also the problem with GG screens that tend to get fucked easily, most get fixed by changing the capacitors but sometimes you'll have to replace the screen.

It's a shame that it's shit as a handheld.

The sound was the shittiest part. Game Gear sound is ear rape.

I thought the Game Gear+TV Tuner was the coolest thing in the fucking universe when I was a kid, though.

I didn't really see the point, most of the good games were available on the Master System. I guess it works out better for Americans who didn't get the 90s MS games.
>>
>>3178498
But I had fun on my game gear as a kid. .-.
>>
fired up my GG for the first time in a while today and saw that I had to tilt the system back a ways to make the screen visible. Even playing with the contrast dial did nothing, I just got a very dim, almost totally black screen if I looked at it head-on.

Is there a good chance that I'll need to get a new screen soon?
>>
>>3180132
No. You need to replace the capacitors.
>>
>>3178498
I liked it before I found out a large majority of the games were just Master System ports with a shit resolution.

It was in many respects to the Master System and Genesis what the Game Boy was to the NES and SNES, although it was a lot further ahead of its time. The Game Boy was significantly less capable than the NES, while the Game Gear was basically a full Sega Master System in a portable form factor, with some hardware enhancements. For performance, comparing the Game Gear to the Master System is more like comparing the Game Boy Color to the NES. Not quite a difference that big, but a fairer comparison than the old GB to the NES.

All that applies to games, too. The game library for the Sega Genesis and MD had a distinct flavor set apart from Nintendo's library. If you like the games for Master System and Genesis, then the Game Gear has a lot of intrinsic appeal because it's got a full library of games like those, scaled down into a portable system.

Simply put, if you don't care for Sega's consoles, the Game Gear isn't going to convert you. If you like Sega, the Game Gear is an obvious choice to own. Because it's such an advanced system, owning one is a bit higher maintenence since most need new capacitors, and there are also mods to address the screen and battery problems.

What you have to understand, and I can't stress it enough, is that the Game Gear was far ahead of its time. It's screen might look like ass by modern standards, but in the early 90s all color LCDs were like that. The fact that Sega even made the thing work and was able to sell it for $150 is an impressive feat for back then.

The biggest reasons the Game Gear wasn't a giant hit are 1) Nintendo was able to sell the Game Boy for $50, and the batteries lasted 4x longer, both of which and that made it a much more attractive deal, and 2) the Game Boy was the established market leader for 5 years, and even as a next-gen handheld the GG was not able to dethrone it. Even so, it managed to find a respectably sized audience in its own right.
>>
>>3180161
okay, thanks

>Plus the Game Gear itself is backward compatible with Master System using a simple pin converter which gave it a pretty solid library back in the day. It was actually the battery consumption that kept me from really using it at the time.
Doesn't Master System have wider resolution? How it was possible?
>>
>>3178498
I had one back in like 1991-ish. The resolution wasn't an issue back when it was new. Games looked great on it. It has a smaller library than the Game Boy of course but there were still quite a few good games on it.

Shinobi is good. I played it as a kid and got stuck on the last level because it's a huge confusing maze. I easily completed it as an adult after watching how it was done on Youtube. Haven't played the sequel.

I love this system. Probably since I wasn't allowed video games as a kid until I started working multiple jobs in high school and was finally allowed to buy one of these at a thrift store. I spent countless hours huddled in the corner, tethered by the 1 foot power adapter, enjoying the fuck out of Shinobi II, Ecco, Power Rangers, and a couple of Sonic games.

Late one night while playing Ecco, the Game Gear started picking up what sounded like confused air traffic communications. Having had video games be described to me as something foreign and forbidden my entire childhood, this experience was simultaneously terrifying and awe-inspiring because I had no clue what the fuck was going on or if this was normal or if I was going to jail. I'm hardly impartial, but if I had to sell you on this system based on my experience, I would describe it as a sort of electronic second puberty.

It's a really fun project with an awesome end result. Good luck!
>>
Still no way to full screen gg games, eh?
>>
>>3178498
Ok, I kind of just want to buy one. Why is every single GG on eBay broken?
>>
>>3184651
They're incredibly delicate systems. My childhood one has an LCD screen that refuses to work. About 8 years ago I took it out of the padded case I kept it in and turned it on, and nothing. However the one my friend gave me around the same time still works.
>>
>>3184665
I read that the Majesco reissues from 2000 don't have the capacitor issues, but they're just randomly interspersed amongst the piles of broken ones on eBay. Major bummer.
>>
>>3184560
Sure there is. You could stretch the picture to a 50" 16:9 screen if that floats your boat.
>>
>>3184862
oooh baby
>>
>>3183956
goddamn that guy's pretty intense. I have second thoughts about trying this, I'm pretty new to soldering in general. In fact, my first solder job was attemping to re-cap my game gear's audio board, which failed spectacularly and I ended up melting other components at the same time due to idiocy. So now my sound is still broken and will probably continue being like that until I buy another GG.

Man I just want to play my game gear collection on my TV without paying through the nose, why does soldering have to be so hard? I wish I had half the electrical know-how the guy making that thread had, compared to near zero. I don't even know how to use a multimeter to do much more than check the charge of batteries, and make sure a cable doesn't have a break in it. I was hoping fixing up my GG would be a learning experience, but now I see it will be a master class after learning the basics on actual easy stuff.
>>
>>3184862
Every image I see it is still reduced, with huge borders. Are you talking about letting the TV or monitor do the stretch or is there another way, like a sms trick?
>>
With modern batteries of actually lasts quite long.

I remember some guys did a video about it as a joke and it ended up lasting like 15 hours on full brightness and sound non stop playing. Or something like that

Bad capacitors were a general issue for many handhelds in the 90s, not just the Game Gear, but also the Nomad and Atari Lynx, the subcontractor they bought capacitors from had some kind of fucking problems (I guess Nintendo sourced them from other manufacturers, because I never really hear about the Gameboy having faulty capacitors, nor of the Wonderswan). Either way, there was a not insignificant amount of failing units because of this, even though many had capacitors which worked fine.

If you have a Game Gear, Nomad or Lynx, and it's acting up, then it's the capacitors that are faulty most likely, and the unit should work fine if you get them replaced, I don't think it should be too expensive.
>>
>>3185718
Yeah, old handhelds run much longer with modern batteries, we've become better at making batteries, regular "flashlight" batteries as well as more advanced units designed to hold charges for long periods of time and being constantly recharged.

I figure, if you modified a Sega Nomad properly, it could probably accept some kind of modern 3DS or cellphone battery to run longer and more easily recharge.

Same here. I couldn't imagine a better time to have been a teenage gamer. UO and Quake Team Fortress took up so much of my time. I also owned Earthbound when it was new, long before hipsters ruined people's perception of it. It is my favorite game ever.
>>
>>3186424
True, although I think it's in large part that people weren't as used to the idea of handhelds being expensive. The Game Boy was something cheap you could give your kid to make them shut up on a car trip, while the Game Gear was a much bigger investment, more like the 3DS and especially the PS Vita are today. Adults weren't terribly interested in owning a handheld game system, and it was too expensive for most parents to just buy one for their kids.

So would I be crazy to try and install the LCD replacement mod by McWill? I've installed things like mod chips before and I'm going to be modding some of my Gameboys with lights, although this is a much more complicated mod and just the kit costs $150. I really want to do it because I'd love to get back into Game Gear, but the screens on those old handhelds are always a major barrier without modding, and in the case of the GG, total replacement. Some people have even suggested that the original screens might be degrading, though I'm not sure if it's just that we're really spoiled by how good modern screens look.

>>
>>3200115
This
It can emulate snes almost as well as a $5 chink psp looking clone.
>>
>>3199901
PSP was miss successful than the Game Gear, but it's a fair comparison. They had a similar design philosophy, though fortunately for Sony the tech and market were right where they needed to be for the PSP to find success in ways that the GG didn't. You had a whole generation of young adults who grew up with the Gameboy, and some of them were looking for something more impressive than another low-cost, low-power handheld from Nintendo.
>>
>>3200319
So, very badly? Last I heard PSP SNES emulation was a mess. Which is weird because every other system runs perfectly.
>>
>>3178498
It was impressive for the time, so I can't fault it as a bit of hardware, but 95% of it's library is available on the master system at a higher resolution, so I don't really see the point in owning one now. Even getting a working one requires replacing all the capacitors or paying exorbitant reseller prices, not to mention how difficult it is to get a replacement screen.
>>
>>3200495
It emulates most famous games quite decently, actually. It might be worse than your usual past 4.0 android machine, but PSP still has the advantage of being a durable low-cost handheld available in most countries.
>>
>>3198493
