Back when I was a kid, playing Spear of Destiny, the manual said it had a "boss key" to hit when a boss appears, and then you should "wait until the boss goes away". I stupidly assumed they meant bosses in the game, so when I came upon when of the dual-chainguns guys, i hit the button, it went to a fake DOS prompt, and me and my brother wondered "how do you know when the boss is gone"? It wasn't until a few years later that I realized it was for people playing games at work. Anyone else remember this feature?

A Tetris clone for DOS called Blox had a fake spreadsheet you could access with the Tab key.

Does anyone actually ever use them? I mean unless you use Lotus 123 (or whatever program the boss key simulated) for work and you have an oblivious boss it won't work, and even then you can't just turn it off when he does come over to you and really need to be on the edge while playing.

Oh, don't underestimate the exact opposite of attention to detail that so many people have. Many, maybe even most, bosses would simply assume that you're doing work as long as your screen isn't filled with dead Nazis.

Not /vr/ but I remember one flash game had a "boss key" that it asked you to press if boss came nearby, and if you did, it blasted "HEY, I'M NOT WORKING!" through your speakers at full volume.

I wish there were more bosses who wanted my screen filled with dead Nazis.

There were a lot of those "sabotage" emails that had someone talking very quietly for about 30 seconds, so you'd turn up your speakers and then it would cut to Austin Powers screaming if he makes you randy in the late 90s.

This was during those days when your boss would say shit like "I know we're all tempted to check our emails at work, but that's company time, so don't do it!" Or mine would, anyway.

I just play roguelikes and text adventures at work

I must be up to some serious stuff if my screen is filled with monospace text you know

The REAL reason to use ASCII graphics in a roguelike.

True enough. I was playing Nethack at work and people refused to even believe it was a game when I outright told them it was.

MUDs work also.
