For whatever reason, Japanese people in the 90's and early 2000's had a real hard on for Fuedal Germanic Europe (Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire, that sort of thing). So they used the story of Charlemagne rising up to claim power by using the Church as a stepping stone. That story is at least the rough basis for a bunch of JRPGs from that era.

I worked in a church for 15 years, but would not call myself religious, certainly not Christian. But I also wasn't dumb enough to recommend Xenogears.
