Kinda found the CG box arts annoying thanks to re-boot having shitty animation and me associating that with everything CG.

Because of emulation I have not seen boxart in a while, but I remember sega games had these terrible grids and a shitty drawing with the game name in times new roman or some shit.

Agreed, CG from the early-mid 90s is ugly and the animations are stiff.

Early Master System games had the clip art-tier drawings, then they switched to half artworks using the same font, and finally to square artworks with varied typography.
So the later releases look decent.

>durr American box art is bad
It's easy to cherry pick "grass is greener" comparisons but it's even easier to just go through microcomputer ports for poor countries.

Check out those cassette games for C64's covers for some interesting game related art.
>>
>>3156392
That cover is great. It gets your attention, which is ultimately the whole purpose of box art.
>>
>>3156523
Nah, m8. When there's regional box-art the US version is worse in virtually every single case. Comparing like for like.

Cherry picking would be using the fact that some knock-off budget cassette games had bad art to try and deflect the fact that the US routinely gets shit on when it comes to art.
>>
>>3156414
There's something strangely endearing about these clip-art covers. They're awful, obviously, but I can't help being fond of them.

Nobody said that. It's just what usually happens. Rarely I prefer the US box over the original. It happens though, like this example. The Japanese cover is a mess with a whole bunch of characters carelessly tossed onto the panel without any composition or though, mimicking a shitty comic book cover. It's the marketing over here who usually would do that shit, but sometimes they did it too. I gotta say I don't dislike the cover you posted.

Less is more. I personally think the NTSC RE2 art looks likesome stupid fantasy book cover (especially because of the overdone font), while the PAL RE2 art has the feel of a gritty, scary action flick.

RE3 is harder to choose from. I love the high contrast of the NTSC art, but PAL once again has way better fonts and composition.

Nintendo America got the game in and said this is releasing in a week and you need box art. No one had seen it or played it before so they played it with the artist to figure out what to do. They saw him shooting and said "Well I don't see a rifle, so he must have a handgun that isn't clear due to the pixelation." yes, it is unfitting. i mean the us boxart isn't particularly "grimdark" (nice buzzword) either but it serves the tone much better. the threatening monsters tell you that the game's gonna be a hard s.o.b but arthur's goofy face lets you know there's a tinge of lightheartedness to it. the weird, almost 1930s cartoon style the jap boxart is going for with monsters simultaneously trying to look scary and chibi with that bright-ass bland scenery in the background just looks weird and i think you know it. also the undies are a punishment to make you feel vulnerable, it doesn't exactly represent the tone of the first game.

the left tells you more about the game. if i wasn't aware of rpg tropes i'd think right was some medieval cooking game or something. it's still good too though, has more personality
>>
>>3197852
the right shows wandering and eating on the go, I have no idea how you derive a cooking game from that. The left is the usual us vs. them stance that's pretty boring by now. Yet another example of the U.S. box art hammering things home with a sledge hammer, afraid that the audience won't grasp the concept of mood pics. ... and you're giving them credit, proving that, indeed, the target audience can't into mood pics, so that ham-fisted hammering is necessary
>>
>>3197858
it's an rpg about fighting monsters but the characters are shown eating snacks and the monsters are barely noticeable at all. it's not hard to see where i'm coming from
>>
>>3197861
it's an rpg that involves a shitload of wandering the world, and the group is lighthearted and confident even though the world shown in the background is aggressive and hostile. It shows the strength of a party, and sets the mood for a grand journey

>it's not hard to see where i'm coming from
And from where you're coming from you derive a head on simple explanation. You showcase no attempt to let the image work on you, to take in the mood over what's shown. As said, in another post, the US get their box art because they need it. They need to be shown, literally, what the player does. Atmosphere and mood is beyond them
>>
>>3197873
jesus christ. as far as just a piece of art i like the jap one. i'm just saying the us one informs you more about the game on a basic level if you're not sure what you're getting into which was much more important back then.
>>
>>3197818
not sure why they gave the troll symmetrical heart tattoos
>>
>>3197885
>i'm just saying the us one informs you more about the game on a basic level
I'd argue it doesn't. I'm not surprised though you're so dead-set on the monster chopping, you can't see the adventure it's in.

If you need the details of a game, look at the back of the box, or look at the last issue of your favorite gaming mag. The box art serves a different, more emotional purpose
>>
>>3156478
can you elaborate?
>>
>>3197929
what?
>>
>>3197890
>The box art serves a different, more emotional purpose

You sound like such a sap. The one on the right is definitely better, but in a place like America, where everyone's values and cultures are hugely diverse (melting pot and all that stuff), in order to sell your game better, you have to break it down in terms everyone from every culture can understand. Culture determines thought processes. Everyone, no matter how different, can understand the very basic concept of the game by looking at the image on the left; that there are monsters, and you, the hero, fight them. That's how you sell something in America.
In Japan, it's entirely an ideologically homogeneous culture, they're all essentially "on the same page" when it comes to general thought processes, so game companies have the ability to make a cover that's a tad more vague, and emotional in what it's trying to convey.
Use your head, dumbo
>>
>>3197965
>diverse
odd way to spell "shallow"

>there are monsters, and you, the hero, fight them
That's your interpretation of the game, and you're too narrow-minded to see it's not the only one

>That's how you sell something in America.
indeed. Simple, in your face, forget subtlety

>In Japan
and Europe, every now and then

>Use your head, dumbo
the irony
>>
>>3197976
Not to mention, around that time games in America were just toys, and were (especially for anything rated under T) marketed as such. What point would there be in including non-essential abstract information on product packaging when your main audience is children?
It's like your not thinking about why things are the way they are.
Also, should mention, you had one box art to cover the entire stinkin' nation, which is huge in every sense of the word, so you'd better have hoped, as a product designer, that your design clearly conveyed what your product included.
>>
>>3198002
>What point would there be in including non-essential abstract information on product packaging when your main audience is children?
Children being able to think

>so you'd better have hoped, as a product designer, that your design clearly conveyed what your product included.
the japanese one does. It's speaking volumes about you, and in a way the US, that it's insufficient for you
>>
>>3197965
>In Japan, it's entirely an ideologically homogeneous culture, they're all essentially "on the same page" when it comes to general thought processes,
Read that again and realize how ridiculous that sounds.
>everyone out of 200 million people think exactly the same!
>>
>>3198009
it's a standard USA talking point. Every country in the world, except for the US itself, is a homogenous blob of group think. The US, due to almost its whole population having immigration history, are the most diverse place on this earth, as all the group thinks from different countries meet, and clash.
>>
>>3198005
>the japanese one does
no it really doesn't. i don't know why you keep saying this. the MCs eating snacks does nothing to inform an uninformed passerby as to what to expect at least gameplay-wise. cover art is supposed to be a pull, it's not really supposed to be a representation of the in-game characters' states of mind or whatever. i mean you could argue that it's more dignified and i'd agree but we're talking market appeal here. the left has better appeal but the right is better art in general. that's all i was trying to say
>>
>>3198020
>the MCs eating snacks
That's all you take from that cover? You sound like a stereotype at this point

>the left has better appeal
Only in the US, and that's kind of a sad statement on its own
>>
>>3198029
>That's all you take from that cover? You sound like a stereotype at this point
i'm speaking as a typical american passerby. reading comprehension anon
>Only in the US
that's a pretty loaded statement, but whatever. unless you're trying to argue that game cover art (even in glorious nippon) isn't a marketing tool (lol) then i guess we agree??

>>3198039
>i'm speaking as a typical american passerby
indeed, you are

Anyway, since you're having so much trouble reading the covers I prepared an info graphic for you. Left shows what the US cover shows. Right shows what the jap cover shows. Both work even at a glance. It takes a lot of (willful?) ignorance to reduce the japanese cover to a bunch of people eating, and thinking it's about food.

I'm merely suggesting that US covers are severely dumbed down, and you're agreeing with it loudly, saying it's necessary because the US audience is ... severely dumbed down.
>>
>>3198039
also half the jap art's just some boring wall texture that wastes space. again, takes away from the pull. i'd say the us art overcompensates but at least they seem to have a better grasp of marketing and using the space given
>>
>>3198046
again the whole eating thing plays in to what i just said about the wasted space. the background art being so small creates too much focus on the MCs who are just kindanonchalantly eating shit

but yeah i was always in agreement of the us art being "dumbed down". why do you think i said the jap cover was better art?
>>
>>3198049
>half the jap art's just some boring wall texture that wastes space

The landscape is framed and the characters are not walking in that landscape. What you call "waste" is a design decision, as it completely changes the impression of the image.

>using the space given
learn about whitespace, framing, margins and composition, really.

>>3198058
>why do you think i said the jap cover was better art
because it's drawn instead of being a low quality raytracing image. You made quite clear that technique aside, you consider the japanese image useless in terms of conveying its message, wasteful in terms of composition, and not representative of the game.

>i was always in agreement of the us art being "dumbed down"
>>3197852
>the left tells you more about the game
>the us one informs you more about the game

yeah, no.
>>
>>3198070
i don't have a problem with whitespace, it's just ugly textured whitespace and detracts from the art itself

the left does tell you more when it comes to the meat of the gameplay. the right tells you more about the characters and gives more definition to the setting
>>
>>3198081
>the left does tell you more when it comes to the meat of the gameplay
repetition does not make it become any more true. I thought the screenshots would help, but apparently that's too complicated for you. Oh well, you got the cover you deserve

Absolutely. that is a pretty cool looking box too, despite the art

I wonder why no one wanted a master system. How could you resist buying this off the shelf
>>
>>3205627
Exactly, I always laugh when I see people defend the white grid Master System boxes, especially when ones as dull as Zillions exist, which tells you literally nothing about how the game actually plays.

>>
>>3205791

>>
>>3206168
But bandicoot is beloved by 90's boyz, you'll get shit anytime negro
>>

At least EU shows one of the things that's unique about the game. This one just looks like some VHS cover.
