best graphics, enemy animations, 3d dungeons and it wasnt your standard tolkein fantasy we've seen a billion times already. It even had fucking cutscenes

What?? How did they get away with that?
And... What kind of fucking scenes precisely...?

Megami Tensei did that before.

This or Phantasy Star. Very different games, but I like both approaches.
>>
>>3142312
Still want to see this as a 3D classic some day.

I could almost hear you mouthbreathe as you typed that.
But keep defending those sub-par games of yours on your failed consoles.

Phantasy Star

Probably dragon quest III or IV, have a soft spot for mother 1 though. Never played phantasy star though so I guess I'm not the one to ask.

Phantasy Star is good but the series topped on PS IV on Mega Drive.

Best RPG from 3rd gen is DQ III, that game blows any other RPG of the time out of the water. The scope and deep (yet simple) customization of your game is extremely rich. Graphics aren't the best, but in turn you get a gigantic world to explore, literally the whole world, blew my mind. That game was the peak of DQ and one of the most important (if not the most) milestones in console RPGs.
>>
>>3142312
Don't forget Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom had branching story lines depending on who you fucked at the end of each chapter.
>>
>>3142312
This.
>>
>>3142289
This is probably the only one I could really get into. I haven't played Phantasy Star but dungeon crawlers just don't interest me too much. Not that they are a bad thing it just isn't something that appeals to me.
>>
>>3142470
That pictures just eats me alive every time I see it. Fucking hell man, it's not fair.
>>
DQ. No goddamn contest. DQ ate everything else alive.

Of course, even DQ couldn't even compete with the best RPG of any type on NES/SMS: Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar.

Classic CRPGs blow JRPGs and modern "WRPGs" out of the fucking water.

The SMS version of ultima IV is the superior port.

SD Snatcher has the best combat system of that era. Fighting is actually fun and you can dodge enemies whenever you don't feel like leveling up.
>>
FFIII by far

I still replay it all the time

Both have great soundtracks at the very least.

This is a joke right? You can't both be this retarded that you don't know final Fantasy 2 was an nes game. The snes one was only called 2 in America because they skipped 2 and 3 by never releasing them in america.
>>
>>3144232
>dq4
why do people think this game is a masterpiece? It wasnt really innovative. dq3 is still better

I didn't really say anything about FF2 or 4.
I was just looking for an excuse to post Xanadu.
>>
>>3144342
>It wasnt really innovative
You're crazy.

Character-driven with clear backgrounds instead of make-your-own-character. Chapters. Hell, seemingly unrelated chapters that culminate in all the MCs coming together. Flying. Floating castle that requires you to fly to reach it.

DQIV pretty much singlehandedly came up with those and more, and they've been a staple not of DQ, but of JRPGs at large since.
>>
>>3144552
DQ4 is from early 1990, you had games like Ultima 4 and 5 or Phantasy Star 1 and 2 before that.
The main new part in DQ4 might be changing main characters over the course of the story. Closest I can think of would be Wizardry 3 expecting you to juggle two parties to complete the game.
>>
>>3143481
I know right?! You just know his ass is 10/10!
>>
>>3144552
>Character-driven with clear backgrounds instead of make-your-own-character
thats what i didnt like about it. I guess Im more into character customization over following a linear story
>>
>>3144689
So you don't like, say, Chrono Trigger or FFVI?

Because they both benefited directly from this new set-character system spearheaded by DQIV. And its chapters. And if we focus on the last chapter of DQIV, its recruitment.

The SNES had so many brilliant JRPGs with extremely memorable stories and characters as a direct result of DQIV's success in the NES. And hell, its characters are still some of the most memorable ones in history. Just Torneko alone...

Oh, and speaking of Torneko, I believe DQIV was the first game to let you run a store. Don't quote me on that one though, but I'm almost sure.
>>
>>3144740
Ah, wait, now that I recall, there was a recruitment before chapter 5. Ragnar recruited Healie in chapter 1.
>>
>>3144740
>So you don't like, say, Chrono Trigger or FFVI?
i do but for some reason i just couldnt get into dq4, sorry and i got up to chapter 5 too
>>
>>3144743
And Taloon recruits followers in Chapter 3, and Nara and Mara recruit Orin in Chapter 4.
>>
>>3142286
Fire Emblem 1 is super slow but its pretty fun.
>>
>>3144740
Square already had set characters in FF2.
>>
>>3142286
FF1
FF3
Fire Emblem 1
Crystalis
Sweet Home

Any of those.
>>
>>3144552
I like DQ4 just fine but m8, not much of that is new.
>Character-driven with clear backgrounds instead of make-your-own-character
Old news by 1990. Phantasy Star did it in '87.
>Flying
Listen to yourself, m8. FF1 had an airship in '87. Ultima 1 had hovercars and space ships in like 50 BC. Oh, and Dragon Quest 3 has a flying pheonix that you ride on.
>Floating castle that requires you to fly to reach it.
FF2 has a dungeon that you need to fly your airship into.

This leaves you with one point, and it's a fair one. It is a great game but you are giving it undue credit.

Persona =/= Megaten, jackass.
The original Famicom games are fucking awesome hardcore dungeon crawlers. Megami Tensei had 3D dungeons in 1987.
>>
Era or console? ADHD warning incoming so... console-wise
-Phantasy Star is visually awesome if plodding (I have fallen asleep while playing it... though this is true with all 4 DQ/DW games + Mother).
-Final Fantasy is buggy as hell, but can is really enjoyable with fan-patches.
-Speaking of which, Final Fantasy III on the NES was a lot better, stupid-hard final dungeon and all.
-I stick with Crystalis on the NES as being the most kick-ass action-RPG of the era.
-If Metal Max ever gets translated (the SNES remake did), that would be kick-ass.
>>
>>3147156
the dungeon effects in the early megaten games gives me headaches

it looks so bad in action, while phantasy star has buttery smooth dungeon animations

Either Dragon Quest or Chaos World.
No one ever talks about Chaos World, but I found it really fun and surprisingly deep (battle system notwithstanding) for an NES RPG.

Nope. Sugar and BP are a bit low. You might be lucky you've never been *that* bored while forcing yourself to focus on a tedious task for another hour. One secind you decide to close your eyes, the next, an hour has passed. And your giant pillow has suddenly disappeared.
