I haven't seen the pinball thread here for awhile.

This is the lineup at my local arcade
>Creature from the Black Lagoon
>Iron Man
>Funhouse
>Theater of Magic
>Whirlwind
>Pinbot
>The Walking Dead
>Star Trek: The Next Generation

Creature and Trek were just added yesterday, and Creature is probably my favorite 90s pinball. What's yours?
>>
>>3111373
Ghostbusters looks like it's going to be a pretty rockin' 90s pinball. Trudeau game like Judge Dredd. Actual interactive toys and a subway. Hand-drawn art.

Some new PhysMod5 have come out though, like 85Vette's too-slippery Metallica and Mustang and Star Trek '13. But an actual playable version of Walking Dead also.

What does that mean?
>>
I love pinballs but man I suck at them

how do I get good? just dump money into them until I can win? Is watching the PAPA tutorials cheating?
>>
>>3113437
Lightning flippers are 1/8" shorter than regular. Designed to drain balls at lightning rates. Look at the gap between them.

Creature has regular flippers but also a 1/4" extra gap.
>>
>>3113726
Ahh cool. I recently played Stern's Kiss and noticed that either the flippers were smaller or the gap was larger. The game times are incredibly short and it really dissuaded me from playing further and getting any better at the darn table.

>>3113453
Tutorials are a great help if you can't get good at a certain table.
Learn about the basics of flipper and ball control, look up vids and read some shit http://www.ipdb.org/playing/skills.html
and it is about playing a lot and practicing so yeah, be prepared to spend some change.
>>
>>3113453
Be the envy of your friends and buy a table and practice whenever you like.
>>
>>3113453
>Is watching the PAPA tutorials cheating?
No as they're "tutorials" obviously.
>>
>>3113453
Definitely watch the PAPA videos.

But they are weak at teaching nudging IMO, and that's a very important skill. You need to learn to nudge early, because the earlier you nudge the less force you need. If you watch the best players they do a lot of subtle nudging even when it doesn't look like the ball is in danger. I recommend practicing on a slower paced older machine (but not a "tilt ends game" old machine).

How important is the theme of a table to you? Can it make or break a table? Or are you just in it for the layout and rule set, and tolerate any theme?
Know any tables that got ruined by their theme?
>>
>>3116107

Honestly, theme is the priority.

Pinball tables are so expensive and such a pain in the ass that I'd have to love the theme. Obviously it needs to be a fun table but a killer theme is what sets pinball apart IMO.
>>
>>3116107
The only way I can imagine theme ruining a table is if it's a music theme for a band I don't like. Layout > rules >>>>>>>>>>> theme.
>>
>>3116107
I generally like most themes. Layout and rules are the important part.
The most tragic thing is a bad table with a great theme.

A friend has lent me CFTBL, it's the first pinball machine I've had and I love it. I've got some issues though that you guys might be able to help with.

The gate on the KISS ramp rejects balls a lot, if they're going at any sort of speed it just bounces them back down the ramp.

The snackbar/KISS lock by the right flipper kicks the ball out so hard that it quite often bounces out of where its supposed to go and ends up either draining down the side or directly down the middle.

Anyone else seen this?

No this is plinko.

Same concept, though. You had a set number of balls that you had to build a poker hand on. Nudging made it easy since it was made before the whole TILT thing.
>>
>>3118589

Things like flippers were later developments to the game. At first it was just a launcher and the pins, and landing the balls in certain configurations won you free plays, which could be traded in for cash with the vendor. This is what led to pinball being outlawed as a gambling game, since it was basically a slot machine. Flippers and tilting and shit were a means to legitimize it as a game of skill rather than a game of chance.
>>

Would you believe that pinball wasn't legal in New York until 1976? When Taxi Driver was being filmed pinball was still illegal. Thats nuts to me.

Another neat pinball fact: Warren Buffett's first enterprise was buying old pinball machines and putting them in barbershops. He started with one, ended up with three, sold the business and bought a farm with the money. He was 14.

>Would you believe that pinball wasn't legal in New York until 1976? When Taxi Driver was being filmed pinball was still illegal. Thats nuts to me.

I know there have been a bunch pin threads. But a while back I was trying to find a way to get into pinball w/o breaking the bank or taking up too much space.

I was recommended some Wii pinball collections on my multicade set up.

WHY DIDNT YOU GUYS TELL ME ABOUT LEGIT (aka non Zizzle) HOME USE ONLY PINS!?

After a weekend of research, and some luck I picked this Briarwood Aspen pin for $100. A few weeks back. Its SO much fun. Picked it up in perfect working order. After 2 plays I did need to replace some of the rubber (rubber bands are in place til I get a true replace kit).

Its 3/4 size so with some creativity and patience I was able to transport and move it by myself and it is an ABSOLUTE hit with friends. I never thought I was good at pinball (I still don't think I am) but I am not totally hopeless.

Is there a master list of home use only pins? Particularly good ones? I think I still have my list of 3/4 size pinball machines to look for that I can share.

I want to warn you guys about something. When pinball guys use the phrase "home use only", they generally mean ANY pin that has only ever been privately owned.

A "home use only" Fish Tales, for example, would be considerably more expensive than a Fish Tales that had been on location at one point because it never got all the wear and tear of a routed game.

So yeah, don't search for "home use only". You'll get the wrong results. You're really looking for non-commercial games.

I got SUPER lucky on craigslist (and happen to live around Allentown, PA- which is surprisingly a bit of a pinball hub of sorts, go figure). I was actually about to settle for one of the Zizzle pins (which I actually heard were not 100% terrible if you can deal with it being more toy than pin).

The machine I found was just being sold by an estate sale flipper who didn't list the name. I figured it out by alot of squinting at the potato quality picture and some picture comparison.

Anyways, 3/4 size machines or the term home use only referring to pins from the late 60s-early 80s don't seem to have a real cohesive following or wealth of information. Maybe the term "home model" is a better search term?

The below forum thread was really where I got my foundation of knowledge.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=118068.0

I made a list of those machines and makers and tried to find other machines they made that were similar.

Since buying mine and catching a little bit of the pin-bug. The only similar machines I've seen pop upon craigslist ads for relatively cheap is "Big Top" by Wico and "Freedom" by Bally. I've seen each of these in varying conditions on the East Coast sell from anywhere between $150 (terrible condition) to $800 (working fine, normal wear).
>>
>>3119812
Sorry, I've also seen multiple "Star Explorer" by Sentinel. Usually in OK shape, anywhere between $200 and $600.

Before finding that pseudo list, I had settled on a "Star Galaxy" pin, which is an alternate version of the Zizzle pinball machines.

>Not even Germany could prevent its crane mechanism, as they attempted to do to Williams games
Got more details on that? Sounds odd as fuck
>>
>>3123254
The German pinball market was huge, and dominated by one guy pretty much. He forced Williams to cut features out of Judge Dredd because he claimed (wrongly) that they were more prone to failure. He was, after all, German, and knew more about mechanical engineering by way of his blood than pinball designers did by way of their trade and craft. He had them by the balls because he said he wouldn't buy if they didn't bend to his demands.
>>
>>3123254
It has been suggested that this feature was changed because it failed under test, leaving balls trapped on the ring. We asked designer John Trudeau about it. He clarifies:

The original ring and [software] program were only used on the prototypes and sample games. Nothing ever failed and all the games worked flawlessly, throughout their stays at their test locations. Even the sample games sent to Europe worked well.

The problem was with the German distributor. He said he saw a potential for failure with the ball crane. In other words, he just didn't like it. I don't know why. And I never actually heard what he threatened Williams with, but it was enough pressure to have the game changed. I fought the good fight for keeping it the way it was, but I didn't have big enough clout to outweigh the potential loss of sales. So I swallowed what pride I had left and changed it. It wasn't as cool as having the balls in orbit, but there was a lot of game still there to have fun with.

The same potential "failure lock-up" point is at ANY ball popper or even the outhole. It just never made any sense to me.

The prototype games were all retrofitted with a new ring and program. The distributors were all sent conversion kits to refit their sample games to the modified play. Whether these kits ever actually found their way onto the sample games was up to the distributors. The incentive for the distributors to do the conversion was the fact that any subsequent software updates would have the "new" ring in mind. The "old" ring would only work with that original software release. I would expect that everyone would eventually do the mod.

What's the story with that?
I've been a member of pinside for a couple of years but never participated in any forum threads.
So recently I notice they have introduced some kind of "Achievement" bullshit going on so I made a thread about it and proceeded to get some warning from a mod for using bad language. Yeah that's right, I was in danger of losing my account because I used the term "fuck" in my post.

It's not too bad on a machine that's properly configured to shoot the ball up and down through the inlane from the kickout. Two easy letters that almost guarantee Class VI if you play your Whirlpool Challenge well. But if that kickout isn't aligned or it's too powerful, then then the whole game becomes hell.

The calculations run at 1000 MHz and ball spin / friction are an actual thing so you can do all the real-life flipper tricks. Ought to actually improve your game rather than retard it as can happen with over-simplified virtual versions.

>>3138342

You can't parallelize them, so that would mean a few cycles for each timestep. Completely impossible.

When Farsight was licensing Addams Family Pinball for Pinball Arcade, Christopher Lloyd wanted several tens of thousands of dollars for the mere likeness of Fester that appears on the backglass art. He also stipulated that if anyone were paid a *larger* amount than what he was given, he would then be paid that amount + extra.

Farsight opted instead to alter the backglass art.
>>
>>3142664
Goddamn. Now he's literally retired from being a poor man's Robotnik in Cyberchase.

>>3142664
Playfield art more notably. He's barely on the backglass, but he's right there between the flippers on the playfield.

Addams' Family and Addams' Family Values are both extremely good.
Prime Sonnenfeld directed both, Anjelica Huston and Raúl Juliá have the best chemistry I've ever seen for an onscreen couple, Lloyd's in his prime at this point, and Christina Ricci does some brilliant child acting, particularly in the sequel.

Fox also didn't want his likeness on the backglass. I'm assuming that was to remove any typecasting; he enjoyed being Marty McFly, but he hated staying Marty McFly.

Pic related is actually the artist's son.
Also as you can see, Data East either ponied up for Lloyd's likeness or he just didn't mind being on the backglass.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, though, it's been a good while.
>>
>>3148507
Not him but don't the jackpots alternate from the snake and bat ramp?
I personally always go for the coffin extend first (crate extend second) then the extra ball.

It depends on the machine as the refitted LED light one's are easier to get the spider wheel on what you want.
>>
>>3148507
Crap I just played two games before I saw this. But I did test the ramp. It seems like it might start multiplying or stacking back to back ramp shots, starting at 50k. I played two shitty games so I didn't get to find out. Is the tilt on this game really sensitive or is it just my machine? Also the left loop for the lock and The Lab is a pretty hard shot, I manage to brick it hard quite often. Really love this game tho, gonna try your strategy next time

I think in normal play, the supercharger values increases when you either hit or complete the 1-2-3 targets and maxes out at something like 10 mil.

Is there any archive of DMD animations in .gif format? more specifically fishtales?

Not that rare, but still damn expensive because it's a highly sought after game. Somewhere around $4000 for a decent example.

Pinball prices just make me shake my head at all the console gamers who think $200 for Radiant Silvergun is a lot of money.

He was being a little douchey about it, but it's true to an extent.

The value for owning pinball machines is just not there. You will never play the machine enough to justify the cost, plus the amount of time and money you'll need to maintain it. The collectors market is absurd right now, even compared to just 5-10 years ago.

I do think that Saturn and SNES games are overpriced for what they are, but pinball has been hit even harder in recent years. A machine that cost $750 in 2006 can easily go for $2500 now.

there is no standard gap though, is there? That was my problem. As for draining more often: it's the same for every other player. So the competition just happens on a different level. There are tables you can occupy for hours, and tables where the average game is a few minutes, and that's fine. As long as the player field is level, it can still be a good competition.

>12 ball multiball

Did it go up to 13? I may need to play this.
>>
>>3170449
Scoring exists to negate "length of play" as a determining factor of skill. Cayle George is a top player but when he burned out a flipper from cradling a ball for an eternity it was about the shots he was making with the other balls and the points accumulated from the strategy and exploitation of rules that resulted in his good score and resulting good performance.

I could cradle a ball for hours and net no score. Length of play means nothing. If you want to rack up score quickly on Creature then move your damn car.

Thoughts on Funhouse?

There's a table in my local burger joint that I play occasionally. I've only been able to get the clock to 11:45 and have trouble hitting Rudy in the mouth, but I had a pretty good run the other day.

This particular machine seems extra generous with the number-matching-free-game thing at the end; I'm either extremely lucky or there's something like a 1 in 5 chance of a free game.
>>

It depends on how much you play and study the ruleset of particular games

around november of last year I'd be lucky to get 2 million points on medieval madness i played it again yesterday for the first time in months after playing about 100 games spread across different machines between then and now, and now i consistantly get 9 million a game at the least

Don't be discouraged anon Pinball is a somewhat diffcult beast to master

Every single game you play will make you a better player

Every game played will help you learn the tables specific rule set easier

You'l learn how to make specific shots on each table and learn some tricks depending on the table itself

You'l learn to be better at general ball control

Don't compare yourself to pros, only compare you to yourself and people and people at your skill level and you will see yourself improve and it will drive yourself to improve even further, and remember all that matters is that you keep getting better at the game, and having fun.
>>
>>3172981

WoZ is one of my top 3 favorite games but the Hobbit is quickly growing on me. The layout itself isn't very interesting compared to some tables and I thought the 4 center field popups would be lame like in Medieval Madness but the table really is all about how well you can aim and make your shots. Even the popups are cool because they act more like Cactus Canyon than MM and give the table a more dynamic feel when you are trying to aim for something and know when they are going to pop up. Also the modes are fairly straightforward with most being hit this quickly and sometimes don't hit this. I'm still learning the table but it is definitely a quality game.

yeah theres a "standardized" flipper gap in pinball but in the ghostbusters the machine is deisgned by John Trudeau who also made Creature from the black lagoon which i remember for having a large gap between the flippers, and John decided to make the flipper gap for Ghostbusters about the same space as creature from the black lagoon
>>
>>3183942
>theres a "standardized" flipper gap in pinball
first time I heard that. I've been under the impression it's pretty free form, with optional center pins and other obstructions. Like the "standardized" gap being a fairly recent thing (1990s)
>>
>>3183948
theres not really a standard flipper gap, If you play enough machines regardless of manufacture you notice theres a specific gap the designers choose for their games and alot of them use the flipper gap on the right not counting the center post, while john trudeau uses the flipper gap on the left alot for games designed by him
>>
>>3183948
The extra gappage is noticeable in Ghostbusters, my standard slap saves weren't cutting it sometimes when it drained down the middle
>>
>>3183996
no denying that it's noticeable. pinballs are pretty sensitive to even the smallest layout differences. What confuses me is that people seem to refer to Trudeau's gaps as if they deviate from some established standard, like he's being deliberately mean or something. I am not even a pinball amateur, but looking at machines from the 60s to the present, it seems to me as if, at least in the earlier days, designers were experimenting wildly, with wide and narrow gaps, various outlanes, pins and obstacles in the center, with or without the slingshots and so on. And the only reason some standardization kicked in is easier manufacturing, and not some motivation to standardize the game per se. Isn't that variety in playfields one of the major strengths of pinball? If they were all made of cookie cutter components, wouldn't that take away a lot of the appeal of facing different machines?

I'm honestly surprised that they're gonna try to get a brand new game like Ghostbusters out by the end of the year. I thought for sure that Stern would wanna sit on it for a bit before making it digitally available to everyone.

so now that were getting digital sterns
what tables would you guys want for next year ignoring the fact all of the licensed themes of the 2000's will probably have more kickstarters for licensing costs

for me I'd like to see
Simpsons Pinball party
Wheel of fortune
and the avengers I just want a music file of the main play music, and i I can't find it anywhere or KISS

haven't played any other sterns that i've heard are better like spiderman or lord of the rings yet so i can't make any judgement on them

being socially inept sucks. There are a few machines around here, but I don't dare going there
>>
>>3191360
I know this sounds kind of cheesy, but alot of socially inept people play pinball. You might find using the pins as a medium, will even help you socialize a bit easier without over thinking. But yah if you find a group of pin players, you probably won't even be the most socially awkward so don't even worry about it
>>
>>3191527
This. I'm actually surprised more normies don't play pinball. It's just so much damn fun.
>>
>>3191527
>>3191569
my problem is, the machines are in pubs or bars. I can't go there. I'd love to, but the thought of going there, ordering or not ordering anything (what's the right course of action? doesn't matter, too shy to do it anyway), popping in a coin and causing a noise distraction for everyone else is frightening me.
>>
>>3191571
not the same anon I don't think theres any right course of action

but if your afraid of you playing the machine and causing a distraction go see when the bar is at it's busiest and go there if it's loud enough with people talking and music playing in the background almost no one will notice any noise of the machine

and go there for dinner or something having a good meal helps with my mood and self confidence alot of the time

Nothing like stopping down at a pizza joint for some good pizza and playing a few games of Kiss for me
>>
>>3191571
Have you ever seen the way some pinball players play? Kicking the legs, flailing of the hip, screaming at the machines?!... Yah I play around these people sometimes, and they go out and play all autist like and give no fucks so you can too. Just order a beer, or redbull if you don't drink... Leave a dollar tip, say thanks, go to machines and play. Put headphones in if you need to (but you'll miss the beautiful machine noises) but yah that's my advice. It'll be worth it
>>
>>3191797
>beautiful machine noises
hell yeah. I still chuckle at the phrase an anon used here in a pinball thread a while back.
said a pinball machine sounds like a xylophone fucking a slot machine

>>
>>3191827
I didn't know these machines even have headphone jacks. Is that a "new" development?
>>

Lol I use my phone. I usely don't do that, only if there is ALOT of background noise and I can't hear the machine anyway

>>
>>3194271
the biggest appeal of pinball is the mechanical nature, the physicality of it. the virtual pinball systems are a fallback, not the future of pinball
>>
>>3194274

Yeah I meant specifically for digital pinball.

I imagine VR would be amazing. Completely immersive, you can use those dumb little waggle pads for the flippers and to actually physically tilt the machine and you have complete control of the view with head tracking.

So simple but would be soooo good.

In High Speed, what do you shoot for once you've hit the jackpot and gotten the stoplight extra ball?
>>
>>3194296
It's got unfinished code, the mode lights on the bottom don't even do anything. You need to have the premium or LE in order to get the left ramp to feed back to the right flipper / cannon, gimping functionality. Lower playfield on these versions is meme level with little pachinko balls whizzing around in a loop at high speed.

T2 layout, Lyman Sheats rules. Cardboard decorations, Mick Jagger style.

Does anyone else not nudge when they play? Unless the ball is stuck I don't bump. It just feels wrong to hit a very expensive piece of equipment like a pinball table.
