In terms of story? Not much, except the trilogies they're attached to like the first three games and Erdrick(or R/Loto). There's continuity sure, but it seems to be mostly flavor to round out everything. Something that Erdrick/R/Loto did is mentioned in DQ1. In DQ3 since you play as him you actually do it. That sort of thing. They're still decent rpgs though, especially 3. It's just the DQ series has barely changed since then, it's like what Mario is for platformers, DQ is for JRPGS.

Interesting, earthbound feels much darker with stuff like the happy happy cult, moonside, mu training, and giygas among other things. Mother 3 is, well I shouldn't have to explain that one. I don't care much for stories in games, and prefer game play. I genuinely enjoy turn based RPG battles and grinding, and 9 lets me do this and make my own characters. I've beaten 1 and 2, started 5, beat about half of 8,and finished 9 and I still like 9 the best
