It is established that the fifth gen goes PS>SS>N64>3DO>Jaguar?PC-FX>Pippin.

Which is better:

A bunch of primitive 2/5 star at best games or the same number of visual novel pedophiliac non-games and a couple good shmups and platformers?

Low poly flat shaded 3D or no 3D at all?

Are the PC-FX and JagCD region and copy free?

Does the PC-FX have a homebrew scene like the Jag?

How is the PC-FX not a console?

>Does the PC-FX have a homebrew scene like the Jag?
The PC-FX had an expansion card version like the Creative 3DO Blaster with the intention of allowing home brew. I haven't seen anything come to fruition from that but it may be hidden in the depths of Japan.
PC-FX is obviously region free since it was only released in Japan to begin with.

If you check the "visual novels" released on the PC-FX you'll see that most are simulations and not adventures.

The GA was apparently also capable of 3D acceleration unlike the standard PC-FX.
I wonder if NEC had intended to sell a 3D accelerator expansion for the console but stopped due to the small install base.
>>
>>3090251
Definitely one of their ideas. NEC was pushing PowerVR graphics accelerator card tech in the mid-'90s, but that never reached the PC-FX and then PowerVR was forced out of their market by 3DFX.

PC-FX being able to interface with PC-98 machines for development purposes doesn't mean it was meant to be a peripheral in the first place. After all, the console's far more audiovisually capable (FMVs and such) than the PC-98.

There are at least 4 good games on the PC-FX:
Chip-Chan Kick! (platformer)
Choujin Heiki Zeroigar (shmup)

Langrisser FX was a port of Part 2 and most of the improvements were in the Saturn and PS versions IIRC.
>>
The Jaguar CD had no region lock but had copy protection.
The Atari Jaguar CD freezes at startup and plays the sound of an enraged jaguar snarling if the inserted CD fails the initial security check.
You need a bypass cartridge, developer bios version, special burning program, or a disc image that has been properly encrypted after being ripped.
The PC-FX only had Japan region games and had no copy protection.
The Pippin was region free but had copy protection that worked in the same way as the PS. I don't know if a modchip for this console (which only has 22 games) was ever developed.
>>
>>3090450
Road Rash
Need for Speed
Quarantine
Killing Time
Shockwave

And although they are often panned, I liked Crash n Burn and Escape from Monster Manor.

Too bad about the Doom port. Hardware was capable, but it was a botched port of the Jag version slapped together in a week. I think it was still late on its planned release date. Arranged soundtrack was badass, but it would have been preferable to have decent framerate instead.

Also for the 3DO, not really a game though, is Sid Meier's CPE Bach. Creates procedurally-generated classical music that actually sounds good.

Yes.
I think it would have been more useful if you didn't have to buy a new computer for the compatibility. It came out in late 89 when the PC98 was taking over the PC88's dominant position.
>>
The Jaguar has an active homebrew scene. As we post new games are in development.

The PC-FX homebrew scene is small and dormant but has potential. There is a devkit and libraries and the console might be able to connect to PC 98 computers. There may already be doujin games for it you might be able to find on Japanese USEnet and BBS.

The vast majority of PC-FX games are visual novels and digital mangas.

Here are a few more actual games:
Super Power League FX (baseball)
Team Innocent (Sci Fi adventure that plays like resident evil)
Last Imperial Prince (sidescrolling action adventure)
Boundary Gate (grid based dungeon crawler)
Kokuu Hyouryo Nirgends (Afterburner style game with heavy story) (pictured)
Miraculum: The Last Revelation (Phantasy Star style RPG)
Dragon Knight 4 (strategy JRPG)
Lunatic Dawn FX (Western style RPG made in Japan)

So that is 12 playable games for the PC-FX.
Some of these were ported to the Playstation and Saturn.

What is the better choice for a retro gamer:

~12 okay games that are entirely Japanese but can be burned to CDR?

or

~55 half decent to quarter decent games that are English but you have to buy carts?

When we debate SNES vs Genesis or NES vs SMS we do not factor in the price.

>>
>>3097087
Actual games!
Not visual novels and press A to turn page CRT mangas.

As for ports both systems are in the same boat.
Some Jaguar games are also on PC and Amiga.
Some PC-FX games are also on SS and PS.
>>
>>3097414
>Not visual novels and press A to turn page CRT mangas.
There aren't that many on the PC-FX, mainly the Anime Freak series.
>>
Why did the PC-FX fail while the PC Engine was a moderate success?
>>
>>3097454
PC FX couldn't do 3D in 96. Interactive anime games didn't catch on as much as they intended and could be easily replicated on CD ROM based 5th gen hardware.
>>
>>3097454
Not powerfull enough when it came out. PC Engine was somewhat succesfull because it was the first 4th gen console

What I am wondering though, technicaly speaking which is stronger: 3DO or Jag?
>>
>>3097454
Because it didn't really offer much over the competition, the main advantage were better video playback and few people cared about that. It had no native support for 3D which was the rage at the time.
Companies weren't interested in supporting a system nobody bought and consumers weren't interested in buying a system with no games.

It may have been a success if released in 1992 when it was originally developed and the PCE had lost a lot of ground against the SFC but NEC decided to mothball it and only released it to compete with PS1 and SS.
>>
>>3097475
They're about even except the 3DO was overpriced next to the Jaguar. I think this is important.
>>
>>3097481
What a HUGE BULLSHIT
3DO was way more powerful than the Jaguar
>>
About technical specs, we could say that Jaguar is stronger, even with all sorts of painful bottlenecks.

NEC, not learning the lesson about adding more chips in a SuperGrafx, decided that the PC-FX would catch with SIX HuC6270's and an obsolete CPU.

And we all know that PC-FX came to America under the name of Whatever-Grafx-32.

>>3098725

>>

The Virtual Boy used a slower version of that CPU so it was not wasted.

PCFX was moonrunes only. And the nips riked it AFAIK.

Isn't the Director's Cut exactly the same but includes the trailer for the original D2 game on Panasonic M2?

This is a tough one. Good points brought up in the thread.

Visuals novels/Tokimeki Memo rip-offs are shit, which is most of the PCFX library.

But the Jag is also nearly completely shit. Doing the math, it has almost no good games and some awfully shitty attempts at 3D. It has what, a port of Raiden (a game that was ported to everything up to the PS1), and Tempest, which is on other systems, and Rayman (also ported to everything). It lacks an identity outside of "awful 3D" and laughable design.

PCFX does have an identity, which is "otaku trash." Something is better than nothing?

IMO slight edge to PCFX, it's a 2/10 compared to the Jag's 1/10 (and just to add, 3DO's almost there 4/10).

Are Green Book games essantially FMV games?

>Tokimeki Memo rip-offs
Are they really ripoffs when they came out before or shortly after Tokimemo?

Did we mention it has stuff the ladies might like as well?

I say it's the reverse.
Jaguar 3/10
PC-FX 2/10
1/10 is reserved for the Pippin

Jaguar games can be so bad that they are good.

In this way Jaguar games can produce amusement which is the original point of video games.
PC-FX games outside of a select few can only produce cringe.
>>
>>3099762
pc-fx's only good games are miles ahead of the jaguar's only good games though

With normalfags maybe. But on 4chan you should be desensitized.

Modern video games need more perverted hentai artists.

How would you rank these?

It's not just a hentai artist. It's an entire hentai studio NEC got to produce an exclusive.
Chip was Custom's mascot, appearing in games like Metal Orange or Carat.

Jaguar was definitely worse

Compared to the SuperH-2 and MIPS, it couldn't hold a candle.

Why did Atari fuck it so up anyway?
>>
>>3101547
From what I'm reading on the PC-FX specs, the system seems extremely conservative. Your basic combination of tile sprite planes plus hardware decompression of video as the main gimmick. Not very exciting for 1994.

In contrast, the Jaguar architecture was considerably more forward-thinking, giving full access to the devs to a variety of fully programmable chips dedicated to video and audio synthesis. Plus it was AFAIK cheap to manufacture.

Too bad the hardware was IIRC full of unresolved bugs and Atari was apparently adamant that the Jaguar was to receive the worst games ever produced.

why didn't NEC/Hudson just release this instead of the pc-fx?

We could have all been playing HD Hi-Ten Bomberman in 1994

That's the Coleco Chameleon in the picture. It was a kickstarter project and a scam because the so called prototype of the console was literally a SNES Jr. inside a Jaguar shell. It's so bad even Coleco which is nothing more than a brand name nowadays dropped it.
