What's that game that absolutely destroys you with nostalgia for better days?

Demon's Souls

Because that's when I had everything going for me. Out of highschool, employed at a good job, hanging out with a QT who almost became my GF.

Then everything spiraled out of control and here I am in my parent's basement wondering where I went so fucking wrong.
>>
>>3088536

You actually dodged a bullet but you don't realize it.

You're still in time.
>>
Secret of Mana. Everything about it is nostalgic, especially the music.

You can still do a proper new game in the mana series, squeenix. Hurry up.
>>
SMB3 and Sanic 1
>>
>>3088524
Shining Force, probably. I played it when I was in eight grade and I made slow progress with it. Last week I was in my hometown and I found my notebooks from the time filled with shining force related drawing. I used to imagine more things about the world and where the story would be headed, and the final boss is a fantastic memory for me because since I didn't understand the mechanics I was severely underprepared and so winning felt like a huge victory.

After shining force came lufia and the fortress of doom. I used to love that too (notebooks from later years are filled with doom island and guard daos drawings), but I think shining force is a bit more nostalgic if only because it's more fun to play, even if the ending of lufia can still manage to make me cry.
>>

For one birthday as a kid I got 3 ps1 games, my mom got me FFIX and two of my friends got me Megaman Legends and Brave Fencer Musashi. We had a blast and stayed up for the whole weekend playing games, and all 3 of those games hit major nostalgic notes for me ever since.

The world map music for FFIX especially gets me.
>>
>>3088524
Super Mario 64, it's the only game I can actually separate from my shitty childhood. For the record I played it on wii vc as a kid and I basically spent most of my time playing it despite owning Super Mario Galaxy.
I'm 18 currently before someone calls me underage, but frankly my childhood was awful and I had no friends so I really can't even think of days that are better than right now.

Probably this game, it always reminds me saying "oh man, a space shooter mixed with the legend of zelda, i wonder if they will come up with more game mixes"

And looking to modern gaming, games with mixed genres are always X with RPG elements.

Oh and maybe one of the megaman games, i was knee deep into megaman i used to draw original Robot masters (i wonder what happened to those drawings), shame that i can't talk about megaman anymore (at least around my friends) because everyone always prefered the X series, and i don't mean 1-3 like everyone with a brain would, no, i have friends that even think X7 is good.

I didn't go to prison.

I quit my job, decided to go back to school, gained 100 lbs from stress eating, barely talk to my friends because they're busy with their lives in a different city and I basically have crippling depression.

I'm working on changing the depression and 100lb weight gain, but I feel like I wasted my time and money at school because computer programming is incredibly stressful, so now I'm out 4 years of my life I could've spent working.

Prison would also be a lot easier to explain to friends and family.

Early ps2/late ps1 games give me this feeling. I don't have many memories of being <10, so these are the games I remember fondly, even if some of them were bad. I vaguely remember the SNES (mostly remember Starwing, dunno why), but not much. Dark Cloud is definitely among them! Also Tekken Tag. Lots of memories playing that one.

Games that I have fond memories of, so many of the games I played as a kid. Nostalgia for better days, are only found from games I played in my early 20's, when I got out of a shitty childhood and into an amazing life, which subsequently crashed and burned.

I'll get back there, though.

I think this was the last game in which I was truly immersed in the game world and story. The childlike curiosity and world view I had up to that point seemed to get left behind from that point onward.

Not that the game taught me any especially important life lessons or anything, it just happened to come out when I was at the age where these things happen.

My nostalgia gland doesn't work on a lot of Nintendo and SEGA games that I played as a kid because I never really stopped playing them, so I haven't had much time to miss them. That said, OP's choice makes my heart swell, and I started replaying Paper Mario for the first time yesterday and kept getting all teary-eyed.

Only kind of /vr/, but when I bought my Wii U I was visiting back home in another province (Canadafag here) and played it for the first time with my brother who I never see anymore. We got to the remake of N64's Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 8 and all the memories of playing Mario Kart 64 with him as kids in simpler times came rushing back. It was pretty powerful.

Final Fantasy VII.

Takes me back to high school, being naive to the world and how it really works, family unit was strong and the American middle class life was still a thing and the future of gaming looked so bright.

I'd go back in time and tell myself to stop gaming after VII, move out of the U.S., NEVER speak to my family ever again and never trust women.

Step 1:
-Get off 4chan.

Step 2:

If I had to choose only one song that fills me with nostalgia it has to be this one

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-V2wgsrfVE

First game I ever saw an ending to, played it a lot with my friends taking turns when I was 6, and even my dad played with us a lot.
Whenever I listen to this I have a lot of images in my memory rushing back in my head, not just of playing the game but in general about my childhood, which seems so far away now that sometimes I have a hard time believing these memories actually happened and aren't just a movie I'm remembering, but when I listen to this song the memories become more real if that makes any sense.
It's strong, actual nostalgia.

Sonic CD, especially the music regardless of it being JP/EU or US. Which is really weird since I played it for the first time just a year or two ago. >>3088524
I don't have just one, there's a few of them that have a special place for various reasons.

The C64 Gyruss port was my first videogame ever, to this day I still fondly remember being a 4 years old kid and waking up with sore thumbs and wrists due to too much Gyruss before going to bed.

Then there's Alex Kidd, my first console game.

Castle of the Winds was my first PC game and my first RPG/Dungeon Crawler, I still remember how mindblown I was after finding out you could move diagonally but I was a young kid and I didn't know enough english back then to properly read the game.
Also played a lot of other games, Duke Nukem, Raptor, Jazz Jackrabbit, Commander Keen and obviously Doom and Heretic.

Then there was the Amiga, Gods, Kyrandia and a lot of other fun stuff.

I guess the last big nostalgic game for me is SaGa Frontier 2, such an amazing experience.

While other games have earned a special place they all came somewhat later than these, with time I also learned to appreciate a few games I played back then much more, but even so, these really hit me hard whenever I go back to them, memories come back every time, good ones and bad ones, but they really make me look at my past in a lot of ways, something that no other games do.

Subjective. Imo SoM was the best. SD3 was great. Legend just had too much obtuse shit going on and didn't have the same nice adventure 'flow' that the other games had.

And fuck that jungle maze with all those switching gates.

Its a shame square fucked up so bad with this series. Dawn of Mana looked fucking amazing. It wouldn't have taken much (aside from a complete plot rewrite and battle mechanics) to make it the best in the series. The "feel" was there. WTF is this kiddy shit square? Who the fuck were you targeting it at, toddlers?

I only played Sonic CD late last year, after beating 1, 2, 3&K, SMS and GG ripoffs, a bit of Adventure, and two fangames Before/After the Sequel.

It's already an instant classic too me. As soon as the Palmtree Panic tune starts I feel strangely happy as fuck, I have NO idea why... Well maybe... I have very, VERY foggy memory of Palmtree Panic Act 3 (and ONLY Act 3) running in DOS maybe when I was like 5 or 6.

It's almost like a direct link to my childhood. Almost like as gay as this sounds I'm travelling to my own past. And I don't even fucking know why.

This is probably the most fun game I've ever played. I used to waste hours just trying moves and jumps in the castle courtyard. I still think it features the best controls, except for camera management.
>Ocarina of Time
If you played it back when it was released, you'd feel like it was the best game ever. Nintendo really poured everything they could inside this game. Top notch graphics and gameplay, great storytelling, awesome dungeons. Child wonder everywhere.
>Banjo Kazooie
Very different from SM64. Still a great game, with an unique ironic style.

>>GB
>Pokemon Red/Gold

Every hear of the joke "Everything was better when you were eleven?"

Basically when you just hitting the threshold of puberty, while you can still be a dumb kid but are growing in an adult and don't have to worry about adult shit yet everything about growth and change seems like it's about you and you really connect to it.

I didn't mature watching Avatar but a few of friends did, and they talk about how it's one of the best shows every. I've watched it and while good, it has some godawful writing and hamfisted lessons. The first season alone is nothing but "girlz r equil 2" which I guess when you're a dumb kid is something you might need to be reminded, but as an adult is just grating.

Anyway the point is games apply here too. So many """hipsters""" connect to Legend of Zelda, Earthbound and arguably Sonic because they matured while playing these and connected deeply to the characters and themes. It's why when you argue that these (while not bad) are not the greatest and their only defence will be "muh feelz".

The theirs people who sorta missed this, and thus have manchildren starved for this emotional growth, thus they obsesses over shit like My Little Pony and more often than not before furfags.
>>

Actually, most people have moderate to high levels of stress at every point in their lives. It's just the lens of memory that leads to us forgetting about the bad things and remembering the good things. Our brains are wired like that.

I would say that everything is better when you're getting high quality pussy on the regular.

Halloween Harry was my first PC game (the shareware version) and it makes me want to go back every time.

I was a Sega kid but PC opened my eyes all the wild and weird titles that you would never see on a console. Just the fact you had CDs that came with magazines that were just pumped with demos and shareware. So much variety.

I imagine that's a big drawcard to today's children to mobile over consoles.

You already posted it. I was terrible at Legends as a kid, so I'd always play up to the fight with Marlwolfe and end up letting my older brother play through the rest. We'd spend hours in front of the TV playing that shit, and hoping for a sequel that seemed like it was never gonna come. But the disc got scratched up eventually, and I never got a chance to actually play it all the way through myself until last year when I finally bought my own copy.

Around 2003 or so I stumbled onto some Mega Man fansites and discovered that Legends 2 was a thing, and we'd somehow missed it entirely. I wanted to play it so damn bad, and never could find a copy since it'd been off the shelves for a long time by then. Didn't end up playing that one either until last year, and I think putting it on a pedestal for so long kinda ruined it for me when I finally got my hands on it since it just wasn't what I was expecting.

Nino Ruins really didn't help.

Dude, just don't play it for a year, give it some time to forget some stuff about it.

I love Rayman 2 but I don't play it yearly, maybe every 1.5 to 2 years. That why it's always magical.

Also I'm lucky enough to love a game that has like 10 different versions so I can try a new one each time.

I also like getting high and playing it, immerses me more and the memories fade out of my brain sooner, but I know admitting this is probably going to draw some Quintenfags.

Donkey Kong 64. I know /vr/ thinks it's the weakest of the Rare collectithons, a genre which is for babbies itself, but what I did was get high as fuck and just roam around the levels picking the shit up and generally exploring. I remember clearing the boss of the Sunken Ship Cove level (fighting an Octopus in the dark, shit was intense and so much fun) and entering the woods level and getting completely lost. It felt so magical. Then I went to bed and tried again in the morning, discovered it's an extremely simple area with only like 4 key areas that all branch of one hub. Good times.

My childhood consisted of a lot Super Mario World. There are a few games that overwhelm me feelings of personal nostalgia, but Mario World by far has left the biggest impact on me. It was my first, and if I was forced to pick one game to keep from my collection, it would be this. Being a kid and playing this seems like a lifetime ago. I don't think another video game can make me as emotional as this one.

Back in the day playing that as a real yungin with like 8 other kids at my apt. complex while listening to the new Eminem CD. We all had that game, would always play it at eachothers houses.

>Super Mario World
It was like a tradition of mine to hook up the ye ol SNES every year or two and play through all the games. I'd always beat SMW and try to beat Mario 3 but that game was way harder for me.

The last time I honored that tradition was Summer break of 2011. The last time things were truly going my way and I was happy, the high point of my teenage life (and my life right now too). I just remember waking up on a hot summer day, chillin and playing my favorite Mario game in my room, then getting the call to go meet up with my friend and these 2 girls that we were always trying to get at lol. I never imagined or could have imagined then how fucked everything would get in the next few years.

The Reason I have so much nostalgia for that game, because I played it at pretty much every stage of my adolescent life. I first played it at around 4-5 years old, that was the one game I never outgrew as I got older.

I just wish I was a kid again.

It's odd, when you think about it. More and more "social" features have been added to games, yet ... it didn't do much good, did it?

That said, I personally don't get the claim that old games were more social, but that's just because I was a heavily singleplayer focused gamer. If it was a multiplayer game, I was not interested, except maybe if the other players could be replaced with bots

>If you played it back when it was released, you'd feel like it was the best game ever. Nintendo really poured everything they could inside this game. Top notch graphics and gameplay, great storytelling, awesome dungeons. Child wonder everywhere.

This. Ocarina of Time still fills me with a sense of discovery and childhood wonderment. It brings back memories of being a child and wandering around an exploring my grandfather's ranch. Those are good memories. I'm sure Miyamoto would be happy to hear that, because from what I remember, Miyamoto said the Legend of Zelda began due to Miyamoto's memories of exploring caves as a child.

That's pretty powerful to me, that someone could pass their feelings onto another like that and we both feel and remember the same thing. That really means a lot to me.

I suppose I think games were more social because I always played them with people, I never had a console, so I was always playing with other kids because that was the only way to play.

I think I got a PlayStation when I was about twelve or so, and immediately got ff7 and loved it, but I don't have the same nostalgia for that as I do for Mario kart

With online gaming today even though you can talk to the other players I just don't see it as a social thing. You are still alone in a room, split screen is the best.

Unreal tournament in my high school's computer lab after class was pretty fun too.

It's not just you. It's just what happens with the passage of time. There are one or two presumably junior high-age kids on this board that kick and scream and deny reality, but things get retro as they age. The PS2 is definitively retro, my dude. You're good.
>>
>>3108775
Accurate. But retro games are objectively better than today's dlc filled bs, but I don't play them just for nostalgia. I like them because I can sit down and plug in and play, no need to put in my Social Security number just to download an update from Xbox live or whatever.
>>
>>3110332
They're not "better" per say, they're different. Retro games were games - in the sense you were given an objective, a path, and hazards to slow you down. They took memory restrictions and did what the could, utilising everything they had to make that challenge as alluring as possible, and because they couldn't be as realistic, they were stylistic which as it ages ends up looking the same quality, and because it was nigh-impossible to play the game without piracy a they didn't need to worry. And multiplayer was more often than not an afterthought unless the game was designed for it.

Now games are the about the "experience". They can put in the best music, graphics, so they make the game be as psuedo challenging as possible, basically holding you hand and squeezing tight when your having a tough time. They don't need to make a game as alluring, because they just exploit the popularity it once had, and then try to make them gritty and realistic, which always ends up looking like shit when technology improves shit months later. Then they have to worry about people stealing it because we can (and will) so they have to jam all the bullshit tracking grabage because it costs a lot of money to make a face have freckles and they need to make it back. But it's a two edge sword because they tech logos also allows online multiplayer.
>>
>>3089742

This game will always hold a special place in my heart because of my brother.

We used to play Pilotwings together on the SNES all the time (along with Sim City). His friends would come over and play too. When Pilotwings 64 came out, we played that together, but we started growing up and changing.

He, being the older brother, grew a bit more distant and developed his own life. He eventually got into drugs, and his addiction has cast a shadow over him since.

Good memories were replaced with horrible ones, and I never thought time would heal them. But it did. Now I can look back fondly on those memories and ignore what happened soon after.

Life is hard and cruel, but sometimes I wish it wasn't. At least I have a few good memories to cherish.

Isn't Vin himself a gamer? I wonder if he's played those games.

>>3111712
Hopefully they'll make a comeback. Even if it's indie kickstarter shit it could be better than AAA corporate-pandering schlock of today.

I'd still play it.

Riddick is based on his D&D character. Vin fucking loves vidya.
Hell, what you should really wonder is whether he posts here.

Star Ocean 2. It was the first RPG I really got into and probably the only game where I just kept playing until I fell asleep with the controller in my hands. I just couldn't stop. Just hearing the world map theme takes me back.

Streets of Rage.
I think I even have the cartridge still, and emulate it a couple of dozen times a year whenever I'm bored.

Syphon Filter, and I don't even think it's a very good game. It's just very nostalgic to me for many reasons, but mostly I really liked how games of that era looked.

the first snowboard kids is one of my favourite games, its music and style just capture a specific time. however, i never played the second part.

is there a big break in aesthetics? the music is fine, but from what i've seen i suspect some y2k-radness, which would just kill the atmosphere for me.

I like SMB1, SMB3, Sonic, the original LoZ etc. Born in 1983, i think i still live in 90s when i am daydreaming.
Living in the Greek Crisis I have to work all day, (not for shitloads of money but just to make a living) and I feel like a prisoner sometimes...

Pokemon Gold or GTA San Andreas.

inb4 underageb&, I was a teen at the time, it's nostalgia for the fact that (A) there was still hope I wouldn't be the failure i am today and (B) the internet still had some hope of turning out good instead of feeling like it was in terminal decline via centralization and mixture with IRL like it does today. It helps that I regularly replay it.

I remember loving walking around in Gold at night. Trying my best to see the screen with a crappy GBC light adaptor thing that clipped to the screen and ate precious batteries, or aimlessly exploring and playing with the Pokegear. That's probably one of my most missed things: Exploring in a Pokemon game instead of rapidly realizing how linear most of the areas are.

>and ate precious batteries
batteries you could actually buy, instead of draining your proprietary rechargeable, and a light you could remove during the day, where you could see plenty and it would not drain anything

Pokemon Crystal, Chrono Trigger, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (I know it's not retro). Something about the atmosphere of each of the games just feels like something that modern games just lack completely. It felt like they were trying to tell a story without it being the usual cinematic schlock that usually gets 9s out of 10s and the gameplay feels way more satisfying than majority of the games on the market. While I know that the devs were looking to turn a profit, it also felt like they had the passion and inspiration to make the games they wanted back in the day (for the most part").

Awesome. I have the same with Crash Bandicoot. Once a year I pick one of the games in the primary trilogy and play through it. Currently playing through the first one.

Also, Pokémon Leaf Green/Ruby, Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories, Tekken 3 and Harvest Moon.

Here in mexico some stores had 3 or 4 playstations modded to use pirate games for like $1 USD/hour.

Me and my friends used to play Marvel vs Capcom 1, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Metal Slug X and King of Fighters 98 like 3 or 4 hours dialy after school, those were the times..

>There were even "tournaments" where the "gangs" of kids near the store meet to fight each other by rounds, we called them "retas". This happened also with the arcade machines with King of Fighters.

Sometimes when your mom sent you to the store to buy tortillas or bread we used the change to play one or two rounds in the KOF machine.

There were stores that had N64s instead of PS1s but these stores were on the nicer places of the city and the rent was often more expensive.
Sometimes you could see 4 players with different colors playing Mario Kart or Golden Eye, and a could of like ten people watching them play or supporting someone.

Thats why I love older consoles, there wasn't multiplayer but local multiplayer helped a lot with social skills and making friends, something that newfags/underages will never know.

1) There were no "better days". When I'm 60 I guess there'll have been "better days", but I don't like that mentality.
2) I actually am not affected by this, ever. My favourite game of all time is DKC2 and I didn't even play it properly as a kid.

>That fucking music
>All those great, charismatic characters
>Grew up watching dad play kof and Fatal Fury, so SNK is a big part of my childhood
Playing this on the PSX was such a fucking blast, even if I sucked at actually playing it back then.
The game still still holds up and I play it regularly, thank you SNK.

Also, Sonic Adventure 1 even though it sucks nowadays.

Those two games/franchises are so bittersweet to me, because they were so great when I was an innocent kid, and life was great and fun back then. And then both series went to shit as I grew up just like my life, so it's pretty depressing, looking back

KOF got weird in 99-2002, got super gay after 2003, and kinda died for a while. At least the new one is shaping up great.
Sonic...goes without saying. Good thing I don't care for it anymore.

loved going back to the city with a new power up and screwing around for another hour. High jumping onto street lights and then buildings, or across awnings in front of stores. Skating around the city and cars

this will forever be the game I feel the most nostalgia for. it's the game i want to show my kids one day. I miss this shit. I miss when it was new and perfectly shiney to my life. now it's dull and brings heart ache. I still love playing it, but the feels are great.

>>3095432
I replayed this last summer so I could finally beat it 100%. the original spyro trilogy will always make me want to be a kid again.

>>3096412
I used to play the demo at least once a day. now that I have it emulated I'm afraid of beating it. I don't want the mystery of the story to be taken away. it has to remain a demo in my heart, forever.

Oh wow, me too. Marlwolf was a pretty hard boss for how early in the game it is; it's got those green homing fireballs and everything.

I think where MML1 was just a fun adventure with some over-the-top cartoony cutscenes, MML2 tried to be a little more serious and character-focused. It's not a bad thing, but the Mega/Roll shipping is laid on a little too thick. And I'm not just saying that because I ship Mega/Tron. Nope...

When I was a kid it didn't matter if I was getting grief at school or if my parents were fighting, at least being able to hide away and get lost in an rpg on the SNES or PS1 made me forget for a while. FFIX was my favorite, I actually avoided looking up art or talking about it because I didn't want to ruin the memories I had of how the characters were in my head. Back then I used to imagine I'd get lost there and would end up saving Burmecia in some survival mode boss rush, then I'd go adventuring with the main cast and Freya would sit with me watching the sunset.

Kind of stupid looking back I guess, but kids are like that, right?
