How the fuck were you suppose to know to stomp on the enemies? I legit don't remember how I figured it out.
what is the instruction manual

what does the HVC-prefix stand for? SNES has SHVC in every game and obviously the S means Super
>>3049862
I've heard that HVC means Home Video Computer.
SM stands for, of course, Super Mario.

It was all in the instruction manual. Remember when games actually had those?

Mario begins on the left side of the screen facing right and the goomba approaches slowly from the right side, indicating you need to move that direction. Running into it teaches you that they are dangerous. The placement of blocks makes it likely that during your attempts to finish the level you will eventually land on a goomba's head, teaching you how to kill them.
SMB's first stage is one of the best for teaching you how to play the game in a very naturalistic fashion without any dialog or diagrams.

I miss manuals.
>>3049943
Fuck, I remember. Manuals are rad as hell.
How else were you supposed to know all the little tricks about movement? Sometimes it was the only way to see the story of the game. Or what some enemies were really supposed to look like. Or that Birdo was pre-op. They were magic.
The first game I bought that didn't come with one was NMH2 and it bummed me out. I think Mario games all still have them though, which is nice.

There's still tons of paper in game boxes these days, though! Unfortunately it's largely just advertisements and safety info in different languages.
I liked manuals, but having those fifteen-page booklets in ten languages really was a waste of paper.
Did there used to be flyers and promotional codes in every box?
