I played Q3A in SP more than I did in DM.

On one hand, my friends sucked, and they were rather into UT anyway.

On the other hand, it was railgun shitfest online and playing majoritarely only in 2 maps.

In SP I forged my way up, map by map, skill my skill, until I beat every map in Nightmare difficulty. Most fun I had of the game until Quake Live came out and it became easier to find people of a similar skill level.

I spent more time fighting Reaper bots in Quake 1 than I did playing the single player campaign. By the time Quake 3 was released I had an internet connection so I had no reason to play single player.

I like Q3A for the speed and simple yet fun maps. I like UT for the cooler weapons, varied maps, third party content (mods, maps, skins) and the fact you can still find a decent multiplayer game today.

Also character design in UT was way better. Oh and UnrealEd was the tits.

I think Q3 did DM better because they really dedicated the game to it. However for everything else UT trumps, and I personally dislike that rollerskate bouncy bunnyhopping movement in Quake games.

I think they're about as good. UT has more appealing design aesthetics and is a lot more fun in a casual environment with the large selection of unique guns and game modes, but Q3 is better balanced, has the best movement system of any fps and it's best maps are way better than UT's gameplay-wise.

I've always found UT2004 bots to be forgettable, i know almost all of UT99's roster by heart though.

Still, Q3 bots have more personality and even those using the same models have different enough textures to keep them unique from each other, while you could easily mistake UT bots without looking at their names.

Actually in vanilla Quake 3 I would've agree'd with you. Having the animation there makes it easier to know when you can fire after switching weapons. However in Q1 or Q3 CPM there's almost no penalty/delay for switching weapons and thus you might as well remove that distraction all together.

Most people play with a solid white enemy skin in Q1 actually. Replacing all your walls with a solid white (can be done with high values of picmip iirc) doesn't really help you much tho, it just messes up your depth perception.

When Loque is on the enemy team I still try to play through the match. Granted, that usually means getting stomped in TDM and a stalemate in CTF (especially if he's defending). He's pretty manageable in Domination, though.

Its a thing that some pros do, I never felt a real advantage, played all my competitions with default FOV and even won a tournament once, also no invisible weapon.

Your vision adjusts pretty quickly. It doesn't even look abnormal once your used to it.

That said, I prefer a FOV of ~105 or so at 16:9. The "proper" FOV depends on the angle between your eyes and the left and right edge of the screen, which is why console games meant to be played frome a couch have so low FOV.

It's max (130) and I actually forgot to put it down to 120 when recording that. Back in the days when CRT's were still a thing I played with 110-120 with 800x600.

130 only really works well if you play widescreen.

I tried and failed, everything is either dead or... weird. One or two games where I get my ass handed to me in complete helplessness, but those are the only ones and they are hard to find.

I would at least welcome any way to filter out the bot-filled servers. It gets me furious that it can't be done automatically by default.
