Holy fuck, I used to have a huge collections of inty games from random farm auction lots my dad bought. Sadly, I lost them all in a move. For some reason, the Intellivision was actually more popular than the Atari VCS in my area.

Haven't tried the D&D games, are they that hard to get into via emulation?
>>
Did you guys actually play this as a kid? If so how old are you now? I was watching the Americans and the main characters' ~10yo son keeps asking for one, and that's set in 1982. Are there people in their 40s that post here? Legitimate question

Not sure if you mean the game itself or the process of emulating it, but both are easy.

I am over 50. I bought an Intellivision shortly after release with one of my first paychecks. I wanted an Atari 2600 (a buddy had one and I loved it), but the Intellivision came out so I got that instead.
>>
>>3033542
I can emulate Intellivision, but is the game itself easily playable without control overlays and instructions?
ie without any of the hoodickeys that you would have had playing it the first time had you bought it in '82.

I always use the overlays on the original controller, even though for AD&D I could probably do without it.

I already had the manual, but instructions (text file) came with the ROMs I downloaded several years ago. I would think you would need instructions for AD&D, even though it's not complicated.
>>
>>3032919
I played Night Stalker yesterday for the first time in 25 years, and I couldn't even break 10k.

I'm gonna play a bit more today, and try to git gud at Space Attack too.

I'm 37, and a Canuck. Some of my cousins had a pair of Intellivision IIs, I got to play them fairly frequently when I was a kid.

Atari 2600s, Intellivisions and Colecovisions were still common in my area until the SNES/Genesis era.

>>

>By the way, if anyone knows, how is Intellivision Flashback?
It's not bad, especially for the price, but the menu is awkward and some of games don't emulate all that well. Some of the sound effects and most of the IntelliVoice don't sound right. I believe Tower of Doom is basically not functional, which is a definite shame.
>Is it OK to experience games with the like-original pad?
The pad is pretty good. The disc feels just a little stiff, but the new side buttons are a massive improvement over the originals. They're soft rubber now and are quite responsive. The only real problem I had was with the replica overlays. They're cheaply made and will disintegrate very quickly. You're better off just setting them on a table within view for reference. You could also just keep the instruction booklet open or look up the overlays online and print out copies to keep nearby.
>Maybe there's a way to connect those pads to PC?
I don't know if it's possible, but that would be great.

I like the discs on the controllers, but fuck those impossibly short cords and hard rubber action buttons.

Also, is it just me or did anyone else's Inty get hot after being plugged in for a while, without even being powered on? Same happened with a Tandyvision I owned too.
>>
>>3034503
>I don't know if it's possible, but that would be great.
I think the easiest way would be to write a driver for COM port.
>>
>>3035983
I dunno, the Intellivision Flashback controllers appear to use DE-9 plugs, but they may not be wired in such a way that you can plug them directly into a serial port. In fact, it's more than likely that they're not. What I would do instead is build a little adapter with an Arduino, and connect it to your PC through USB.
>>
>>3035840
I don't remember how hot they got, but my family played so much that we wore out at least three consoles. An original, a Tandy and a II.

Found this catalog that was sent to me in 1988 - I'm the 50+ dude - by '88 I had not played an Intellivision for several years. In fact by that time I had a Coleco and NES - and my first PC was in '87.

I don't know what version that system is, but $75.70 isn't bad - that's about $150-$155 today. I'm sure I paid over $200 for my first one in '80 or '81. I wish I had bought several and left them in the box.

Intellivision II is the only Intellivision system I have now - it works fine but I could use at least 1 new controller. $12.95 each in '88 - I wish I had bought 10 of them.

I wonder if that "JOY STICK" was worth a damn. I would like to try that board game.

Do you mean Space Battle? That was an interesting strategy shooter.

Pay careful attention to the clues in each mountain. Each type of bones or droppings means a certain monster is nearby. Each color of mountain has a different treasure guarded by a major monster. Depending on the route you take, you'll need different treasures to get through the map obstacles. Gray mountains just have extra arrows instead of a treasure.

You'll also hear most of the major monsters snoring when you're near them. Just remember that bats and rats will muffle the sounds of more dangerous monsters, and the blue demons don't make any sound at all.

Spiders will steal an arrow whenever they touch you. You'll hear a little tick each time it happens. If you press 0 to count your arrows, the number of ticks you hear is how many you have left. The purple blobs are indestructible, so avoid those completely.

Don't forget to use the side action buttons to run, and practice your arrow ricochet angles. Both of these things can save your life on the harder difficulties.
>>
>>3045529
they aren't, they're sometimes even cheaper than 2600 games, and people give those games away.

>>
>>3054536
By itself? Sorta. In the context of "Holy shit, my bleep-bloop machine is talking to me!" sense, it goes a long way to enhance the supported games.
>>
>>3056614
Did the Intellivision have some RTS games? Also how cool would it be if Star Craft was ported to the Intellivision?
>>
>>3058315
Utopia was probably the closest thing they had to an RTS. I highly recommend it.
>>
>>3058315
Space Battle is a combined strategy and shooting game, played in real time (unless you go easy mode), but you don't get any control over your fleet composition, just the movement of units.

Sea Battle, on the other hand, is more like a modern RTS, but lacks the base building aspect.

Utopia, as >>3058330 recommends, is very close to a modern RTS. It's gameplay is divided into timed phases, but that more or less just shows the progression of calendar time in the game.
>>
>>3058330
>>3058681

The neighbor girl who used to babysit me when I was a child just up and fucking gave me all of their old atari and colecovision games, systems, and controllers. Some of this shit is hard to find now, like the colecovision steering wheel and of course those badass super action controllers. The only thing I regret more than my marriage is selling that stuff off when I was a teenager.
>>
Damn, looking at the specs, it's a shame the Intellivision got so few titles. I only really knew about Treasure of Tarmin before, but Tower of Doom has tons of depth. I can only imagine what sort of amazing limits the system could have been pushed to given a longer lifespan and some real 3rd party support.

Okay, how is this game so good? It's a single screen with a very simple maze, four enemies, three of which don't even kill you (until thw bats get replaced by th weakest robots) and you have to pick up a limited use gun every six shots, or when you die. Like, this game shouldn't be any fun at all on paper, yet playing it for real is a blast.

I do sort of wish that robot upgrades weren't tied to score and that the invisible robot had a bit more of a tell than just seeing it's bullets when it shoots.

I'm 49. I lived in Jackson, MS from '80-'82 and I loved my Intellivision. We were one of the few cities in the country to get the original keyboard component. I remember seeing it in my local video game store, once. I also remember the price - $900. Yikes, just think how much that would be in today's money. I played my Intellivision regularly up to about 1994. Then power button got glitchy and you really had to work it to get the thing to even come on. I bought one of the plugin games they released a couple of years ago, but the sound effects are TERRIBLE. But I did play some Utopia for old times sake.

Oldfag here. Where I grew up the Atari 2600 was the absolute shit when it first came out. But a couple years later the Intellivision came out and raised the bar. After that a lot of gamers began to regard the 2600 as a box for the plebs. The opening shots of the Console Wars I guess.

The idea of a plastic overlay sitting on top of the controller pad was not ideal...it was easy to hit the wrong buttons.
You had to memorize the overlay, and then get rid of it.
Besides that minor gripe, Intellivision and it's games were shitloads of fun.
>>
>>3075839
It certainly has that compulsion element that makes you want to push yourself a little further. The introduction of more challenging fauna seemed to me to come at a better rate than in things like astrosmash. Don't tempt the fates for the snacks at the sides. There was always this stigma that the Inty did methodical and thinking games where the Atari was better suited for action lovers but Shark! was a great example of compelling action done right among others.
>>

Really it evokes something like Mario did later and Intellivision in house development and software control was Nintendo like for pushing out quality and keeping out crap. The Blue Sky rangers were really an asset for Mattel. Daglow who worked on Shark! Shark! was particularly interesting in the long run for his past in the mid 70s for his role in early RPGs on PDP and Plato university systems.

Actually, sounds like she came up with the idea as well from what the Intely site says on trivia. Not sure, but I had thought I read an interview or something crediting the design elsewhere but sounds like it's her in this case.
