Quake was an experience, a culmination of all of IDs tech and design. Quake 2 was a bland modern shooter made to sell copies.

Quake 1 had lots of addon content too, just not as much originally, probably also not messing as deeply into the game mechanics, which of course became irrelevant with all the source ports and such.

I don't agree, actually. Yes, Q2 is more coherent, but Quake 1 was more interesting in terms of story and potential, and Q1's soundtrack is unbeatable. I use it to read horror stories (read all Lovecraft with it).

Q2 is still good, Q4 is its worthy sequel, played it recently. But Q1 has a special place. I hope it gets a real sequel some day.

Q1 is the odd one out in the franchise. It's basically Doom rebooted with Lovecraft.

I think he mean atmosphere anon. And I have to agree. There weren't a lot of Lovecraftian-based games at the time and even now there are more but they pale in comparison to the stories of alien invasion, which have been in various media since the 50s in various forms. Quake 1 definitely had s more unique basis when it comes to the atmosphere.

Both are great, Quake 1 wins in my book though. Quake 1 was scary. Quake 2, on the other hand, gave me fascination with cyborgs and grenade launchers for hands.

I grew up with Quake 2, a friend dragged me into Quake 1 after we all had extensively wasted our time away with it and the beautiful mods people had made for it. While said friend and his Quake 1 buddies always praised the game I could never really come to like it. It always boiled down to "Quake 1 needs real skill, it's the real Quake" but Quake 1 just felt bland to me.

Q1 has the best SP out of all them - it was good, and best MP on all them and actually all FPS games period.
Q3 has the second best MP of all FPS games and the SP is just MP which is okay if you like MP but disappointing if you were looking for a world to jog around in and explore.
Q2 MP shouldn't even be on this list it's that bad and the SP is okay at best. At least it looks good for it's time.

It's a pretty good game. Disregarding the setting, it's pretty much what Doom 3 should have been. Only bad thing (and it's a big one) is the shitty death minigame.

Does anyone have a Download of the DirectQ II sourceport of Quake 2?

It _was_ released at some point (see link below) but all the webpages related to it have gone offline and I can't for the love of my life find a download for it.

I loved the DirectQ port for the original Quake since it was barebones and kept the vanilla graphics.
