>>3030347
Show me a modern ad that does what you described. I can't even think of a modern printed ad for a video game and tv commercials are mostly gameplay clips set to music with a release date at the end. So if anything, ads have gotten better over the years because they don't show nearly as much random bullshit that has no relation to the game. The only real annoyance with modern ads is the Only on XBOX One* (*also on PS4, PC, Wii U, PS3, 360, Atari Jaguar and Intellivision) bullshit that companies use to trick idiots into thinking multiplatform games are exclusive titles.

>>3063905
>Life was more fun when advertisers didn't have to walk on eggshells trying not to offend someone.
For you, maybe. But, surprisingly, you're not the center of the universe.
We still have free speech and advertisers have every right to continue pumping out the same kinds of ads they did in the 80s and 90s if they so choose. They don't because the market has changed and the marketing changed accordingly.
>>3063905
They still don't 'have' to, they choose to.
It all traces back to far bigger (and less solvable) problems than 'muh SJWs', like increasing development costs (needing better sales to recoup costs > need wider appeal > dumbing things down and selling movies with QTEs)
SJWs are just a symptom of this, not a cause, if anything dudebros have more blame than SJWs. (but get away with it in some stupid enemy-of-my-enemy way.)
>>3054743
Nintendo handhelds always had a lot of adult gamers, just not adult hardcore gamers.
The office women who now play Candy Crush in their cell phones, were a big part of the success of the Gameboy and DS. The Gameboy was bundled with Tetris when it was released, and it was the big system seller of the console, until Pokemon 8 years later.
Now Nintendo lost that audience forever.

>>3071005
They didn't need to say anything about the game, that advertisement wasn't aimed at people who didn't already know about it. It was aimed at people who played the game in the arcades already to convince them to get it to play at home.
Something that is often lost on people now is how big a deal SF2 was when it was new. For a lot of people it was THE game, and having it exclusive on your console and being able to market it as such was a massive thing. I have absolutely no doubt that SF2 sold a large amount of SNES consoles to people that would have otherwise ignored the system entirely in favour of the competition, and that's what that ad is about.
>>3064364
Word. My mother was a Tetris fiend when I had my gameboy. There were times when we had to fight over the Gameboy because she wanted to play it as well. Happy times.
It did exactly what Nintendo wanted as well because it also got her interested in other stuff too, Like Mario & Yoshi, Dr Mario and Bomberman. Tetris is the ultimate gateway drug vidya.

'free speech' =/= 'first amendment'
the first amendment protects free speech from the government, if you say 'muh first amendment' because you were banned on 4chan you're an idiot.
HOWEVER
if you say "muh free speech" because you were banned on 4chan, you're probably still an idiot HOWEVER there is a possibility you're not because you aren't invoking an irrelevant protection from government, but making a moral claim. Freedom of speech is a principle, not a legally implemented rule. You can have free speech and censorship in contexts outside the first amendment.
t. someone sick of GG idiots who accepts that there's some trade-off involved between free speech and a desirable environment (however, forced to choose between excessive "yell fire in a crowded theatre" speech and excessive censorship, i'd pick the former)

I have an issue of batman from 1988 with this ad, and it confuses me to this day, I didn't think they started advertising that early.

I am not American, I am the guy who posted the Hillary picture, because it is an example of an adult woman who was never a hardcore gamer casually playing on the gameboy, presumably something like Tetris.
Nowadays she probably plays candy crush on her cell phone.
Never meant to introduce politics into this. just an ultimate example of a non hardcore adult gamer owning a gameboy in the 90s.
now Nintendo lost that market, and that is a big reason why the 3ds will probably end up with around 65 million units sold, instead of 150 like the DS, 80 like the gba (the gba was only supported 4 years) or 110 millions of the gameboy (including the gbc)

"Freedom of speech"--not the legal concept which has already been addressed, but the social concept--is a two way street. You can say what you want (as these advertisers did), but that doesn't mean others can't respond the way they want as well. Free speech has NEVER been about "you can say whatever you want and people are only allowed to react in ways you approve of." Marketers don't make ads like these anymore because they wouldn't play in today's society, and such ads could potentially cost them revenue rather than attract it. Marketers are less interested in what they're "allowed" to say and more interested in what they can say to make the biggest financial impact. Your problem lies not with free speech, but with ever-changing societal norms.
Yesterday, I saw commercials for two family-friendly stores (Macys and Target), both of which solely featured women jumping around in a variety of underwear. Granted, the context was a bit different--it was ADVERTISING what was on display, for one thing--but it was likely carefully crafted to make female viewers not feel like the women were being objectified while still being able to turn men's heads. I have heard and seen zero buzz on the commercials--semi nude women is so commonplace that no one even bats an eye at it now. If you want eye candy, you're in a good place in today's world; if you NEED to have said eye candy reduced to orifices (in advertisements for Zombie Chasers or Excellent Tetris), well, sorry, but the times have passed you by.
