No, it was popular when it came out.

What happened is that there was a time when people pretended all 2D games were not as good as 3D, and probably you're someone born in the 90s, and having little to no memories about pre-5th gen.
The same happened to SOTN.

The Metroid fans loved it, and it got good press all around, everyone agreed it was the tits. It did sell somewhat poorly for a Nintendo developed title. Nintendo did that to themselves though, they released this game in April of 94, and Rare brought out Donkey Kong Country that November, so guess which game was on kids minds that holiday season? DKC sold 9 million copies, Super Metroid sold 1 million.

Then you probably haven't been around for very long because Super Metroid has always been well liked. Look at old Best Game Ever polls on GameFAQs from the early 2000s. I'm certain Super Metroid would be pretty high on all of them.

More like the last ten to fifteen years. Early /v/ always praised Super FUCKING Metroid.

I had Super Metroid when it was new and loved it, but it wasn't quite iconically popular yet. In the circa 1994 era people really loved their Sonics and Mortal Kombats and Street Fighters and the SNES's icon was Mario so beneath that was Super Metroid as a solid sleeper hit. A new gen of game systems soon followed so there was no time to reflect on SM's greatness until the 2000s really.

It was incredibly popular when it came out and even sold enough to become a "player's choice" title.

In Japan, the Metroid games have never fared very well. But in the west, Super Metroid was received very well and got stellar reviews. It was a very early SNES title and even got reprinted as a player's choice game. It was very appreciated.

Not really. SNES launched in 91 in the US, so there was about 2 1/2 years' worth of games before Super Metroid. It was kind of a late SNES game and I think it would actually have been somewhat less overshadowed and a little bigger of a deal had it come around like a year earlier.

I've been telling people this is my favorite game ever for 20 years my nig. The only game that ever topped it for me was Disgaea, but that didn't win out because jrpgs take longer to have fun with than platformers.

When Super Metroid came out, it was garbage. It had terrible gimmicky controls. Worse than Mega Man. No fun. It was like playing a 3D game, it was really shitty. Imagine Resident Evil in 2D. Not cool.

Not sure, but I didn't actually play it until around this time last year. All I know is that it was fucking great, and is now my favorite Metroid.
