What's the worst/most fearful incarnation of pic related?

Maybe FF6's, or FFX's if not retro is on the table (Ambushed! Instant bad breath every fight)
>>
>>2995615
The ones in the Omega Ruins have a 100% ambush rate
>>
The one from 8
>>
>>2995620
I was thinking the one at the arena. Hello, you summon the creature from nothing and it still manages to surprise you.

It's a good thing that Auron's Celestial Weapon has First Strike on it.

Well we're all clearly going to agree that it's the Great Malboro from FFX, but can we focus on the /vr/ entries?

I contend the ones from 7 or 8 (and I yelled to cabbie yo holmes smell ya later) because the less party members you have, the less likely you're going to be able to recover from the shitload of semi-random status effects it throws on you. Having four or five party members gives you one or two more chances of having a party member get a decent roll against it.

Actually, I forget, does 8 have ribbons? If not, then that one.

Only if you have the pocketstation

8 by far

Never remember having problems with the one in 7 or 6, 8's always fucked me

Enjoy your monster hunting

That is better than dodging lightning, catching butterflies, hours of boring blitzball, and dodging birds while riding a chocobo.
>>
I think 7 or Tactics if you read into the lore are the scariest in terms of aesthetic. 8 has the most obnoxious one, but I think its rendition of the malboro actually looks kinda cute, instead of scary like it should.

15's malboro looks to be pretty frightening, but I don't think it'll come across as scary since you could probably outrun it before it wrecks you.

FF8 by far.
If you don't know what you're doing or are unprepared for the encounter, it is likely a game over.

FFVIII I think you had to kill tons of Malboros while grinding for the Lion Heart gunblade pieces

Nah, you just farm elnoyle cards for pulse ammo or whatever. The other pieces are easy to get.
>>
>>2996367
I think >>2996272 means the Morbol/Malboro Virus skill. Which is effectively {spoiler}a spore that transforms the target into a Morbol/Malboro, which is how they reproduce.[/spoiler] I can see that as kinda creepy from an aesthetic or lore standpoint.

Will they have this guy again in Final Fantasy 15?

>chocobo race

This was one of the few times a game legitimately pissed me off, that shit was so fucking gay.
>>
>>2999013
Chocobo Race sucks, but the Lightning Dodging is way way worse. I made it to 93 dodges before losing, which took more than an hour to get to.
>>
>>2999137
>tfw getting to 150+ then getting hit

Makes me want to rip my eyes out, I ended up just saying fuck it and dropping Lulu.

Thank goodness Quistis could OHKO them. It was only a matter of attacking first.

Worse, the GF Doom Train.

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Thunder_Plains

>The player can use the "crater trick" to facilitate the process. In the Thunder Plains - South, there is a crater that forces a lightning strike. This crater is just south of the agency next to a lightning tower between the two crevices on either side of the map. For some reason, every time that Tidus steps into this crater after the first time, a bolt is guaranteed to come down. So knowing when the bolts will strike and how the game allows it to slightly preempt the flash by half a second or so, makes this minigame a lot easier. The player needs to move a short distance away for it to trigger again, but it's still only a few seconds between each dodge.
>>
>>2996313
I really can't understand how anyone can enjoy a cluttered layout like that. This is why I never understood MMORPGs, most of them look this awful.
>>
>>2999950
The XIV UI is pretty trash, but as someone who plays a lot of those shit games I never found anything wrong with clutter. Most of it is stuff you just need to know to play the game, it's like asking why a character sheet has so many boxes on it. They're well past just needing a lifebar and two buttons, for better or worse.
>>
>>3002054
I dunno man, there has to be a way to streamline this. Character sheets have a lot of data, but you're not looking at them at every moment.
>>
>>3002264
The only way to make it "cleaner" would be to hide necessary or convenient information. You need to know your group's vitals, you need to know your own vitals, you need to know the enemy's vitals, you need a chat log, you need to see your hotkeys so you can keep an eye on cooldowns. The map is an optional convenience (a necessity sometimes), same with threat list. All that leaves from that image is the time, gil, exp bar, quest log, and system buttons, all of which can be disabled.

Sure, there's room to streamline some of the necessities, but that's just minor aesthetic stuff. If you tried getting rid of that information, the game would become an even bigger clusterfuck.
>>
>>3002264
Step 1: Sharply cut down on the total number of usable abilities.
Step 2: Rebalance the game to compensate for the tighter skill tree.

Skill inflation is a major problem in MMOs.
>>
>>3002789
That's a gameplay issue, not a UI issue. Honestly, the guy in that screenshot has a pretty retarded hotbar layout. Can easily resize them down and stack them properly.

But yeah, FFXIV has massive ability bloat. Half the abilities of every job should be combined with other abilities or made into passives.
>>
>>2999137
Lightning dodge is easy as shit once you figure out the trick to it. Chocobo Race is goddamn miserable because if I remember correctly the layout is slightly different each time, and some are basically impossible to succeed on.
>>
>>2998064
Where did I imply he was wrong? I implied he was posting stuff that wasn't /vr/.
>>
>>3004969
Can you just go to school and stay there?
>>
>>2995893
>does 8 have ribbons
it doesn't, you just take your pick and junction what you consider the worst ailment on your defenses and pray that all goes well
>>
>>2999137
>>2999908

I added a wrinkle to the "crater trick" strategy and accomplished this at the point of the storyline LONG BEFORE equipment with "No Encounters" becomes available.

What I did was: I'd position myself a step north of the crater then prepare for the flash as the cue to dodge the lightning. The dodging action forces Tidus onto the crater forcing a second bolt to dodge immediately after. Once that happened I moved to my starting position north of the crater. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Of course, walking will eventually trigger a random encounter, but at least it breaks the tedium of preparing to dodge lightning.

And a protip: Do this in batches of 10-15, 20 if you're really confident in your reflexes. (I wrote down "mileposts" in multiples of 40 where I would take a short 5-10 min. break between dodges... 40, 80, 120, 160, 200)
>>
>>2999182
Lulu is useless mid-late game anyways
>>
>>2999885
You had to be a genuine autist to figure out Doomtrain without a guide. I just don't see how it's possible to figure that out.
>>
>>3005696
One of the occult fan's book says outright how to get Doomtrain, the problem is that said mag is easily missable
>>
>>3005919
it doesn't fucking say it outright. All 4 of them combined give you clues about how to get Doomtrain and it seems obvious when you already know what to do to get him
>>
>>2995948
Not to mention they're some of the strongest random monsters, they have a shitton of hp at level 100.

>>2996313
She's not that bad since they made it that gear syncs to HQ stats. Also if you got there, you passed coincounter, which is a retard check in itself, and the first boss, that has literally the same mechanic.
>>
>>2998165
Nah, but you can farm them for a lot of other stuff. Plus, you can devour them for a stat boost, but since you can get stat boosts with money and you can get infinite money with Tonberry, it's kinda pointless, albeit a bit faster.
>>
>>2999137
>Friend can't do chocobo race
>Try it for him
>Do it first time
I also did it several times both on Vita and PS2, sure it takes some RNG, but with a good layout you can definitely do it with a bit of skill. Heck, I hate the temple race more, I think. And fuck lighting dodges. And as much as I like Blitzball, I never got around winning THAT many encounters. I wish there was a way to make that faster but nooo.
>>
>>3005919
What>>3005975
Said, outright my ass. It's cryptic if you just found it happen chance, you wouldn't get it and say oh "better go do this cause there's a gf waiting".
>>
Ok, so playing FF:O - FF2 for the first time on ePSXe. I'm in the Jade Passage, and I keep running into groups of 6+ Great Malboros.

Gus and Leon in particular are susceptible to their attack debuffs. (I've got a ribbon on Firion) What are the best spells to resist these effects? I assume Shell?
