You can if you want, but I don't like too. I'm stuck with my name in real life, so I might as well do something different since I have the option. Same reason why I generally choose female characters.

When I was a kid I named them all after myself. As an adult, I go for their default names. And if there aren't default names, like with an Elder Scrolls game or the like, I try and pick a lore-appropriate name for them.

If it's a mute protagonist I give him my name. It's kind of fun when the characters address you directly. Mute characters are basically avatars for the player anyway.

in zelda i always put 'link' as my name

I've taken to giving them goofy names. Not usually anything to over the top, like I named the hero of dragon warrior Stinky for example. In FF7 I renamed Cloud to Clod.

It's fun to come up with something stupid. Same goes for making a goofy looking character when there's a character maker. It adds fun but when serious moments happen you're usually used to it enough that it fades into the background. Then on occasion you remember what you're playing as and have a giggle.

Never really use my own name. Maybe I should give it a try.

I only do it there isn't a canon name for the protag. It's just kind of weird when you're playing the Legend of Zelda and everyone calls you DAN.

Dwarf Fortress is a fun game where I practically name "Every" dwarf after someone I know, it's perfect to be attached to them~

If it's a game that doesn't have much of a player-character focused plot, I usually name them after myself. Something with my name not appearing often in dialog is okay.

In later, more protagonist focused RPGs though (FF7's a good example), I would much rather just use the default names for everyone unless I'm deliberately fucking around (naming Cloud PenisniggerxD or something).

I usually name the character after my online handle if it's a generic protagonist and leave the default name if they're an actual character with a story arc.

Like if you use your own name in Pokemon, Dragon Quest or Earthbound who cares but I wouldn't reset the character name for someone like Terra or Flint.
