It seems its best games are either too expensive or were ported to other systems.

good thing its easy to play copied games with swap trick, mod chip, or pseudo saturn.

it's worth it only if you bought one back in the 90s, otherwise you're just a bandwagon jumper hipster
>>
How good is Saturn emulation?
>>
>>2941505

I went from Genesis -> Dreamcast. Never knew the Saturn even existed.
>>
>>2941513
That's how many of us were. When Dreamcast came out, we all thought "holy shit, sega is back! I loved the genesis, I wonder what happened to them?"
>>
>>2941513

How did you not know about Sega's 32 bit system? You avoided reading video game magazines?
>>
>>2941527

I blame Bernie Stolar for killed support 2.5 years before DC launched.
>>
>>2941484
To collect for? Now everything is expensive.

The game cases have unique long boxes which I like. Like SEGA CD boxes but with different spine art.

I love the console but it really only has a handful of games. That handful are amazing and most are entirely unique to the Saturn. NiGHTs for example. Nothing pleas like NiGHTS. Except for NiGHTS 2.

Emulation for it is pretty decent now. While it can't really replicate the controller, I recommend playing NiGHTS, Burning Rangers, and the Panzer Dragoon games.
>>
>>2941535
>I blame Bernie Stolar for killed support 2.5 years before DC launched.

SOJ wanted to kill support as early as 1995. They were talking with Nvidia back when they did the NV1 for a new machine as early as then, but Nvidia couldn't get the NV2 working and they went with 3dfx instead (remember the Black Belt?). Then that deal died as well due to 3dfx being retards and announcing it in their Initial Public Offering, which made Sega back the fuck out immediately and went for the design that became the Dreamcast.
>>
The NiGHTS port on PS360 has shit controls. Saturn game + 3D controller isnt much. Fighters Megamix/Panzer Dragoon Zwei are still exclusive. Sega Rally/Virtua Cop/Virtua Fighter 2 are insanely cheap. Die Hard Arcade and Darius Gaiden are good. Some of Capcom's fighters had their definitive console version on this system.
>>
Isn't the Saturn like the easiest system ever to copy discs to?
>>
get a model 2
do the swap trick

You might me thinking of the Sega CD.

and action replay cart
>>
>>2941513
>>2941526
Really? Saturns were everywhere back in 1996. I guess if you weren't paying attention in 95-97, it disappeared really quickly, though.

I can attest that they did a terrible job creating interest. The big long boxes attracted interest, but the games they show cased weren't there. And sorry Nightsfags, but if that's the best game you can showcase, you're not going to sell consoles.

I have a Saturn now, though.
>>
>>2941484
If you want to actually buy games then you're basically going to have to get a Japanese Saturn or and Action Replay cart because US releases are ridiculously expensive.
>>
Any other solid must-play recommendations?
>>
>>2941973
Not all of them.
Bit of a shame about those rising prices, Galactic Attack (read: motherfucking RayForce) got expensive, and it used to be pretty cheap.

>>2942139
Bulk Slash is a must play, but it's kind of expensive, and only going up. JP only.
It's a mech game that's kind of like a 3D version of Ranger X on the Genesis. Plays way too similarly to be a coincidence. Cool-ass music, decent if not amazing visuals (one thing that is impressive is the infinite draw distance on the floor, although actual 3D geometry pops in much closer to your face, bit of an issue on the snowy stage)
Has cute navigator girls. Absolutely no Japanese knowledge required. One of the best 3D games on the machine.
only issue is the escort mission, which isn't hard, just a bit annoying

Virtua Fighter 2 is one of the most impressive games on the machine, with full 480i 60fps 3D graphics.
VF2 is also one of the best 3D fighters ever.
Fighting Vipers doesn't render 3D at a full 480 pixels, but it exchanges that for better lighting effects, and it's a really fun game, too. Not as refined as VF2, but maybe more fun at low level play (and solid enough at higher levels).

Galactic Attack is a must play. IIRC, MAME still has some issues with RayForce (some enemy lasers aren't drawn fully -- you're not likely to die for no reason from them, but it's an issue).

Virtual On is one of my favorite Saturn games. Me and a couple of buddies used to go to the arcade to play it. Saturn version is pretty solid, but not arcade accurate (relatively low framerate and noticeably altered move properties).

Panzer Dragoon 1/2 are definite must plays. Price is going up, I got PD1 for $12+shipping back in 2012, it's like $30 now.
Emulate Saga.

>>2941506
SSF is okay. It's leagues above the competition, but it's far from ideal.
crank up the compatibility settings to max, or you will have issues (namely with Guardian Heroes, which will freeze on you if you don't)

>>2942562
I just get bored of it fast. What is so good about it? I dont see it.
>>
>>2942475

Keep in mind that it was initially intended to be a 2D console...The 3D was shoehorned in to be competitive. Best 2D console ever made IMO, though.
>>
In hindsight I think Sega was right. The 3D from that era aged so poorly I think it would have been better if Gen 6 was the first 3D gen.
>>
>>2941484

PlayStation was so much better. I don't even know why you would bother with anything else from that era but the original PlayStation.

The best and only good console in that generation. Don't settle for less.
>>
>>2942652
I can't even name more than a handful of games that are worth going back to on the ps1, tons of games on the 64 and saturn that have aged well. Ps1 was only good in the moment to the standards of the era, it's shitty 3d and reliance in prerendered backgrounds have aged it terribly. At least the Saturn had great 2d, at least the 64 was competent in 3d.
>>
PS1 was wannabe movie garbage with its cinmatic games.
>>
>>2942664
why does my Saturn keep resetting date and time
>>
Because the battery is dead. Get a new one.
>>
>>2942674

>>
About 2 years. My store sells me a new one for $2.
>>
>>2942585
>The 3D was shoehorned in to be competitive
I often hear that but don't understand how Sega could have been blindsided by the rise of 3D gaming what with them being such a pioneering force for that style in arcades. Did anyone at Sega actually think people wouldn't want to be playing those at home on their new console?
>>
>>2942696
I'm going to assume they realized how shitty 3d looked at the time and assumed that 2d would be more efficient for the home market. If they had been 2d only the system would have retailed for a much more competitive price too.
>>
Wait a sec, VF2 Saturn ran at a faster frame rate than the arcade version?
>>
>>2942724
Yeah, 2.4 fps quicker, the Saturn version also used Bitmaps for the Stages instead of full polygonal renders.
>>
Uh...citation needed. Wiki says that all versions run at 60fps.
>>
>>2942739
>> Not checking the virtua fighter wiki over wikipedia.
>>
Yeah, Model 2 games actually run at 57 FPS, but I think the PSN and XBLA ones also run at 60 FPS?
>>
>>2942739
>>Following the arcade release, it was subsequently ported to the Sega Saturn in 1995. The Saturn version added an option for remixed music, and a "learning" feature where the AI would adapt to the player's abilities. Due to hardware restrictions, the framerate was changed to 60 from the arcade's 57.5, and the 3D backgrounds were changed to 2D bitmaps. The Microsoft Windows port in 1997 was based on the Saturn port, but also ran at a higher resolution.

>>
The real reason why VF2 on Saturn is still relevant is due to that perfect d-pad.
>>
>>2942167
It's a shame everyone seems to have forgotten Virtual On. I think it's a great franchise that deserves a second chance in this day and age.

I'm not even acting like a hipster who suddenly heard about it and considers it the best series ever or something, hell the reason I got to know it indirectly is because of the VN Muv Luv. Spoilered cause not really related to /vr/ IMO

Not true. It was always designed to be 3D, but without sacrificing 2D performance.

Too many processors, each with a shit load of functions. It would take a year of full-time work just to implement emulation for everything.

No, it was always meant to be able to do SOME 3d, just nowhere near as much as the Playstation.

Wow, I never realized how much better the arcade version looked. Those saturn backgrounds in particular are very flat.

>>
>>2943113

>>
>>2944019

you can choose both soundtracks, the arcade or the saturn arranged
>>
As much as I like arcade ports, the additional gameplay modes in the Saturn version of VF2 and Fighting Vipers will never make the obsolete. Though, having Fighters Megamix does kinda make FV redundant.
>>
>>2945230
>Fighters Megamix
Such an underrated game, it makes both the ports of VF2 and FV obsolete. I love how it branches out from just Virtua Fighter vs. Fighting Vipers into a general Sega All-Stars fighting game, complete with Sonic characters, the guy from Rent-a-hero, and even the car from Daytona.

The best Saturn fighting game is this JP exclusive though.

>>
>>2941527
>>2941513

I was launched 6 MONTHS after the 32X. What's worse, it was a surprise launch, so for the first fw months only like 6 retailers in America had them and SoA didn't have the chance to make hype. I don't blame you.
>>
If I just get an unlocked Saturn, can I just pirate games on it? As in, downloading the ROMS and booting up in a CD-R?
>>
>>2945627
>it makes both the ports of VF2 and FV obsolete.

It definitely makes FV obselete (other than Pepsiman, and I think you could smash people up to hang on the walls there - never could get that done in Megamix).

But, VF2 has much more dynamic animation and hitboxes, hi-res graphics, and ring outs, so Megamix is not a direct replacement for it. Even with the VF3 moves. The plethora of secret characters was a real nice treat though.

The games biggest fault is probably the fact that the audio restarts every damn round. what the fuck.

Best 3d fighter on Saturn would have to be Dead or Alive though.

>>2945954
The problem with the early launch was that it pissed off all retailers, so no one even bothered carrying the Saturn after that. It killed the console then and there.
>>
>>2943129
>It's mostly remembered for the technical tricks that were implemented when doing the port, like using each of the Saturn's two CPU's for each player.

That's just tight coding. Technical trick would be the 3d transparency in Burning Rangers.
