Since I see her sprite in game, then her in game one. It's really jarring in most remakes to see her Amano portrait. Same goes with FF6 as well. I wish there was a hack to remove them.

Old Final Fantasy games really did a terrible job at keeping this stuff consistent though. It's bizarre that anybody would work so hard as to produce a big game like that, only to mess up such a basic, obvious thing as making the characters look like themselves. Just, like, have the sprite guy look at the Amano images once. Or write down a few basic points for Amano to match his stuff up to. "She is blonde, oh great portrait master Amano-sama." There crisis averted. Is it really that hard. :(

My first exposure to FFV was the GBA version with those terrible portraits, so I didn't doubt for a second Faris was a girl.

But I replayed a bit of the PS1 version today, and I can see how without portraits, how Faris could be perceived to be a man. Infact, I like that much better than her being a obvious female.

Amano is a very talented artists, that's not really up for debate but he was a horrible choice for this game because not only do the characters not even look close to what the game sprites do it's just, well five is a silly game and there's just no humor or anything to his designs. He works better on the more serious titles

You can't always put what he draws into the game though.

Look at how over designed his shit is. He knows what systems he's designing for and Square had to have told him what they wanted before. Im not really sure what the order for these things is but I doubt the sprites where pulled out of someone's ass design wise.

No matter how you shake it he's the one not playing with the rest of the team.

and like I said there's also the issue of tone, and setting which he does not mesh with at all.

Amano draws sort of cool landscapes and creatures and shit, but his character designs all look like weird transvestites covered in nondescript ribbons and baubles
