Hello /vr/,
another thread about autism and the aspect ratio of NES and SNES.
We all know that 8:7 is not the aspect ratio displayed by the real console.
My problem or rather confusion is the following:
In Retroarch I play with Aspect Ratio provided by the core, which is 4:3.
Now if you tick or untick the option "crop overscan" the image will get stretched differently.
Without overscan cropping it's 1280x960px and with it's 1196x896px.

Which one is the right one? Or is it a completely different one? This question goes for NES and SNES.

I thought the console did output 8:7 ? I dunno I wasn't keeping up with the threads I just remember one a month ago.

Extra stretchy

About as stretchy as I remember

a gif for comparison purpose.

so the less stretchy looks more correct? thank god
>>
>>2885524
this is the correct one iirc.

The overscan would not make change the aspect ratio, it would just show more of the screen, on a normal TV.
>>
>>2885547
I think your eyes will adjust to just about anything, but yeah I'd go with the overcropped one.
>>
>>2885554
>>2885559
And what about NES? Because a lot of games are drawn beyond the overscan area. It's just weird that it would display the aspect ratio incorrect when not cropped. I think you may have to set the aspect ratio manually as core provided is flawed when something liek this happens.

I made the same test with nes and the aspect ratio is consistent with or without overscan cropping. But is the aspect ratio correct or is it too stretchted like 1280x960px version of the snes?
>>
I checked the back cover of snes mario and the correct aspect ratio is indeed the one with the overscan cropped (4:3). Thank you guys!!!

Accordong to the back cover of nes mario, the correct aspect ratio is 3:2 instead of 4:3? Is this correct? Or was just a very old TV used when this was captured? Or has it maybe to do with NSTC-J? The Eu back cover also features 3:2. Are there newer nes back covers that display 4:3 instead of 3:2?

retroarch screen capture 3:2 aspect ratio for compatison
>>
>>2885685
It's 4:3. Look at the images. It's cutting off the top part of the screen.
>>
>>2885685
Using the GBA version isn't a good reference.
>>
>>2885793
>>2885804
right, sorry I didn't see that it was from the gba version.

Okay but the problem is still eminent. Snes (bsnes core) with overscan cropped displays correct 4:3. While nes (nestopia core) with overscan cropping on or off has no effect on the image. you can only mask the overscan.

So the question is, is the underscanned image aspect ratio in nes wrong, like it is the case with snes?

I just re-checked it again and the correct aspect ratio -according to the backcover- is about 1.44:1 which must be the IMAX 70mm full frame format 1.43:1. 4:3 is 1.333:1.

4:3 for comparison
>>
The exact aspect ratio varies a small amount from CRT TV to CRT TV due to how they were constructed but it's still roughly 4:3. They don't have square pixels like modern HDTVs and it ends up making the end result of the image less exact. Larger CRTs typically have much more pronounced scan lines, at least when displaying lower resolution NES/SNES content and there's also always going to be a bit of distortion near the edges of the screen that will vary from set to set.
Also, the amount of overscan that ends up cropped off varies from set to set and the amount cropped vertically and horizontally does not necessarily add up to the exact same dimensions all around. How and to what degree the overscan area exactly ends up cropped can vary from set to set by a degree larger than most would probably assume.
>>
>>2885894
Good thing all snes games have a fixed overscan area so you don't have to worry to lose out on something.

did another check. zelda back cover is 4:3 and not 1.43:1 like mario.
summary: fuck you nintendo!
(its like with the gameboy back covers. one is b/w the other one is yellow)
i'll stick with 4:3
>>
It's 8:7 forced into 4:3.
The console outputs 8:7, but the screen it's being displayed on is 4:3.
>>
>>2885973
There's a good possibility that they're just photographing an actual TV/monitor screen and then the game package designer is cropping them kind of haphazardly to fit the particular design. He might have even distorted them by stretching horizontally/vertically as well and the monitor that was photographed (if that's the case) might not have had the exact same aspect ratio of most TVs of the time, hence the inconsistencies.
>>
I was thinking about buying a framemeister to allow my crt to show the correct 8"& but with black boarders.
>>
This is without a doubt the most autistic thing ever. Measuring screenshots from the back of boxes to determine AR. Holy fuck.
>>
>he doesn't have an 8:7 display just for SNES games

How can anyone be this much of a peasant?
>>
Just bug a SNES or NES and hook it up to a CRT TV. Problem solved.
>>
>>2885530
the logical aspect ratio (number of pixels) is 8:7. The display that's outputting that signal (the TV) is usually 4:3. The result are non-square pixels (which was very common and normal back in the days). Add in overscan, and some developers not correctly compensating for the non-square pixels and you get a nicely hot mess.
>>
>>2887679
no that's ugly.

Why are you on this board? You could be arguing on /v/ about HD remakes right about now.
