Can we get a thread about good games to play in the dark? Also, games that scared the shit out of you as a kid general.

Doom
>them monster screams, especially hell barons outta nowhere
>>2845319
Weren't those the ones that just sound like elephants that stepped on their own dicks?
If there are any specialists, I have a very weird question about that game.
>>2846164
About Clock Tower? I know more about the first game, but feel free to ask.
>>2846186
I've completed the game ~3 years ago, on a burned iso (I somehow lost my original disc in middleschool, but I still have the case).
Last week a friend was spending a few hours at my place, so I thought I'd show him that game a bit.
Before the opening FMV played, like it normally would when booting the game, I was greeted by some kind of in-game cutscene in what I think was the last level; there was Helen and that fat guy (Nolan? I don't remember) that calls her "teach". The fat guy said a few words, and the screen went black. After that the opening played.
Just in case, I checked my memory card, but there was only a Xenogears save on it.
What the hell was that?
King's Field has some creepy atmosphere, and most FROM games have depressing stories.
>>2846202
I have vague memories of the game showing random clips when you idle on the title screen, but maybe I'm mixing memories up.
>>2846214
I didn't know that, but I don't think it applies since it launched straight away (even before the actual intro).
>>2846225
Assuming I'm remembering things correctly and the game does show such videos on idle, is it possible the disc could've incorrectly read that video file instead of the intro video at first? I have no idea about the inner workings of the ps1, but I'm sure someone on here could answer that.
>>2846262
That would seem like the most likely scenario.
The only thing that's bugging me is that it wasn't an actual video clip but only a voiced cutscene.
>>2846285
(I mean an in-game cutscene)
The first 5 Tomb Raiders, especially the original, are prime examples of the amazing lonely and eerie feeling of early 3D games working the game's favour.
I wish more modern games had this.
One of the creepiest/weirdest game I've ever played. It's a shame it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
>>2846351
I will try to play this the first chance I get.
>>2846351
Glad to see I'm not the only one to own this game!
The first time I played I found it pretty damn creepy, but now I just find it cool and unique.
>>2846351
I remember seeing a screenshot of it in PSM as a kid that freaked me out, though I can't remember what it was. Gotta get around to playing this, always forget about it.
This may seem out of place in this thread, but this game was fucking bizarre as shit for me when I somehow got my hands on it as a kid. Something just felt really strange. It's a romhack of some Speedy Gonzales game so Sonic can kick and there's other weird stuff like rescuing Marios and that fucking ending.

Silent Hill on original PlayStation made me and my friends all poop each other's pants. None of us would play it alone, we waited til someone could come over
>>2845226
Silverload. It's a western point and click adventure with a Werewolf spin. It's extremely gory and doesn't pull any punches with the story. I guarantee, if you set the atmosphere (lights off, headphones, mouse emulator) you're going to have a spooky and fun time.
>>2846487
It's probably just because of the glitchy graphics/music. The red and black background that is clearly missing layers and high pitched screeching the music is just generally unsettling.
It reminds me of Porky's Pigs Haunted Halloween on SNES. It's a fairly innocent game, with an actually cool seasons system that changes each playthrough, but certain aspects just seem sinister. The music in the first part of level one is ghosty, but then you climb up a tree and it gets all psychotic killer sounding... Then the second level which is a western town has really muted music and a constantly film reel flicking noise.
Also each level has a 1 screen "opening" type deal, and the Mine's one is just downright creepy... Hm not in this person's run. I guess his season made it look innocuous. I swear when I did it the sky was blood run.
>>2846492
Why are you so mad?
>>2846164
Clock Tower is probably the spookiest pre-5th gen game
I remember getting spooked watching Arino play it
>>2846209
My nigga.
Obligatory mention of Waxworks on IBM/Amiga. If you're going to play it through for gods sake consult a walkthrough.
>>2846343
I couldn't play the games as kid because i found them too scary
got over it after I played SH1
>>2847432
Same, those fucking sharks scared me too much to go on.
>>2846137
Thanks to this post, I'll never be able to unhear it.
I'm somewhat okay with this.
>>2845226
Illbleed and D2 are some pretty mindfucky DC horror games.
>>2848129
I agree for Illbleed, but I don't really see them in D2. The game starts promising but the story becomes average pretty quickly. Maybe you thought of that insane pianist and the mother wearing a metal mask?
Also, I think the game was somewhat censored: in Japan, a tentacle came out of the dick of the first boss (the grandpa), and I think it was placed on his back on the other releases.
>>2845226
My based grandpa got it for me and my brothers when I was 3. The atmosphere and feel of the game were really intensified by my young age. Maridia, Wrecked Ship, and Lower Norfair were spooky as hell to me. It was probably the most I've ever felt immersed in a game.
Pic related is just a sick game.Playrooms anyone? Also DOOM 64 for the "Music".

Enjoy your shit taste
>>2850828
Wow what an asshole
>>2850828
I knew about kings field connections to dark souls for awhile, but didn't get around to playing them til recently, and holy shit I love them all, maybe even more than the souls games, the slow combat didn't bother me at all and the atmosphere was totally unique and oppressing, couldn't get enough of kings field man.
I didn't quite like shadow tower as much, though
>>2848381
I just realized shadowman has a "shadowman: face on hi chest lol. That would be like batman having the bat cowl on his chest
>>2850828

Enjoy your shit taste. The first two Tomb Raider's are trash in any case.
>>2851576
I felt exactly the same way. For me the best thing about the Souls games was the level design - alongside the atmosphere - and KF had already nailed both. Somehow the crudeness only adds to it. I haven't tried IV or the Shadow Tower games yet.
Not retro, but a fulch anon had uploaded the full collection of summer comiket 2015 and recommended specifically a dungeon crawler that looks very KF inspired, Dungeons & Darkness. First person with free movement, slow-paced etc.

I haven't had the chance to try it yetjp locale in WINE bullshitbut I can upload it for you if you're interested.Sharing is still allowed here, right?

All Tomb Raiders were unplayable trash. But not as bad as JRPGs. Ugh.

Sometimes I forget why I stopped lurking this cancerous wasteland. And then I remember.
>>2853783
the fact that you spaz out like this when called out on probably means you should stick to lurking.
>>2853509
Pathetic bait but to inform the newfriends inevitably lurking itt, none of those 3 games are JRPGs. You can't even attack in Hellnight.

tell me ive found the wrong games because those look awfully rainbowish and not scary at all

So sorry that you grew up with Ocarina of Time, so you're unable to time jumps, but Tomb Raider plays perfectly fine once you understand how the jumping and grabbing works.
>>2853898
are you a troll?
>>2853898
baroque on the saturn is a lot darker than the ps2 version you have there. the ps2 version i still consider pretty damn spook theme-wise but it kinda just has a little more anime in it. still i fucking love this part:

>>2853980
>defending a game that's literally broken on s fundamental design level because of your blurry nostalgia goggles
back to 9gag, le 90s kid
>>2853510
Not baiting. I just don't like trying to manage 3D plat forming with a character that controls like a quadruple amputee, and don't even get me started on the broken-ass combat, pants-on-head retarded swimming, and pointless pretend sense of "exploration".
>>2853898
You're looking at the PS2/Wii Baroque remake which has an English localization but moved the perspective from first person to 3rd as well as fucking up the great score. I haven't messed with it much but it doesn't seem like much of the atmosphere was carried through.
Get the Saturn or PS1 version, iirc there were mainly some balance changes to the PS1 port, it's the version I played. There's no translation patch available but you can make do with fan scripts.
I want to play through the PS2 version sometime because I heard the actual story is great.
And the Dark Messiah you found is just a popular Ultima Underworld kicking mod. Dark Messiah is the JP name, localized in Europe as Hellnight - on PS1 - so search for that.
>>2853889
>I remember seeing this game somewhere, was it ever fan translated?
Not that I know. I played through a couple hours without much trouble though. Story/characters are pretty easy to guess at.
You wouldnt know the english name? I lost the rom but only have that pic saved with moon runes filename. >>2853850
>>2845226
>Silent Hill
I really wasn't scared by SH my first time through, more weirded out, like watching a Lynch film or something. D2 on Sega Dreamcast made me appreciate the world of Japanese cerebral horror games, so after that and a few years of aging, went back and played it and loved it.
Also props to Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider 2 (those fucking Tibet levels with the Yetis man). Also kind of funny, but I was about 10 or 11 when RE 1 released. I remember never being exposed to zombies before or the 'abandoned place with a lab hidden underground trope', so that game was fresh as hell to me and scared me.
Guess I was lucky playing it believing the zombies, Cerberus and Hunters were literal monsters, how Mikami must have planned, with it being a spiritual successor to Sweet Home and all.
>>2847785
The demons sound like camels as well. Plenty of cartoons and TV shows have the exact same grunting sounds for some camel.

Who's the faglord who needs to go back to 9gag, really?
>>2854470
WTF, Tomb Raider's gameplay is great.

There isn't one, but you'll get some results by searching Yuuyami Doori Tankentai.

I've been playing TR since it released back in 96, and even as a kid I had ZERO problem with the controls or gameplay.
You have no excuse not to get good, kiddo.
>>2846818
I had that game on DOS. I wish I could get it to work again--last time I tried it in DOSBox it didnt work but I would love to try it again. I love the color palette in that game. Very spoopy.
Is Eternal Darkness retro enough? It's technically an N64 game that was ported to Gamecube. It's very spooky
>>2853889
Juggernaut is a about $20.
>>2855497
It's like a retro version of those weird Dark Souls complaints. You should just git gud fgt.
>>2855701
It's called memearrows you newfag.
>>2855940
The meme you're looking for is "deal with it"
>>2851592
It's an actual mask embedded in his rib cage. In an attempt to keep Mike the Shadowman permanently. It was done during the edgy 90's comic era.
I still fucking hate the witch.
