Encountering Green Dragons while navigating The Cave to Rhone. The cave itself is a frustrating to navigate mess. Green Dragons are just the cherry on top.
Also, those baboons you fight later on that can instikill your whole party, if you don't kill them fast enough.

I just recently beat NES FF1 for the first time, and the only enemy here I had trouble with was zoidbergs. Even then, they never wiped my party. However everytime I see one of these threads, tons of enemies from FF1 are listed off. Did I just get lottery tier lucky?

More like you'd need to be unlucky for it to happen to your whole party. I've played through the game a couple of times, NES version only, without such problems. Some cheap deaths for party members happen, but no frustrating game overs. People really overstate the unfairness because they're casual.
