You got rused mate. It was Billy's twin, Bimmy, all along.
>>
The opening intro of the NES Double Dragon II is kinda weirdly constructed, but the guy who is shown attacking Marian in the opening (>>2812071) is one of the ninjas you face in Missions 2 and 8, and afterward, it shows a closeup of Billy's eyes. You never actually do see Marian killed though, it's simply mentioned after the fact.

I never met anyone who dislike Double Dragon III that wasn't parroting the AVGN and spamming Bimmy memes.

Wow, so they weren't even trying to hide the whole HnK ripoff thing anymore?

This mentality is the worst and it's getting so out of hand we got people now claiming anyone who dislikes Bubsy is parroting e-celebs. Fuck off just because an e-celeb has some criticisms about a game other people mention doesn't mean those criticisms never existed in the past.

But I only played the arcade version of DD3 so for all I know you're probably right about this.
>>
>>2813450
I hated it ever since I was a kid and rented it and couldn't beat the first stage. Game is bullshit difficulty.

Double Dragon III's reputation as a bad game is pretty overblown. Yes, it's a step back from II in some ways and the removal of even basic moves like the shoulder throw is kinda bullshit, but the game has its merits like the option to switch between multiple characters mid-play or draw a weapon at any time.

The arcade version was definitely crap though, even without the credit-feeding item stores.

>>2813712
The game is quite easy once you learn how to spam your spin kick. Chin Seimei is also pretty overpowered once you get him.

Honestly, the original Double Dragon felt more Warriors-inspired than Hokuto no Ken. Then again, the same guy who made Double Dragon also made Road Avenger, which was basically an anime version of Mad Max.
>>
>>2814701
I honestly felt Combatribes was Technos' shot at bringing The Warriors to video games.
>>
>>2814701
Check out the PC-Engine's opening for Double Dragon 2, it has pretty much the exact same opening as HnK.

I agree the first one was more like Mad Max, though.

The console versions was when they started aping Hokuto no Ken's style, especially when they did the promo art for the Famicom version.
>>
>>2814775
A lot artists were aping Tetsuo Hara's style in the mid 80s to some degree of success, but Double Dragon and Jojo did it best.
>>
>>2813450
Ignoring Bimmy and retards spamming it I actually agree with AVGN's review of Double Dragon III especially about the part of spinkick simply refusing to work when you REALLY need it.
>>
>>2814874
tbph that could be said for pretty much any fighting game. I never seem to get the move I need most to come out in a pinch. A lot of it is panic but still.

Pretty sure they show her getting gunned down quite explicitly in at least ONE of the versions

Similar too but legally distinct from Billy gets a cuter girl anyways

>Pretty sure they show her getting gunned down quite explicitly in at least ONE of the versions

PC-Engine kills her off immediately in the intro before the game even starts.
>>
Double Dragon story is some cringy shit, one brother kills the other because of some random whore who ends up dying anyway. Talk about futility.

That was the arcade version, which is a completely different game that just happens to have the same title. The NES version has some superficial similarities, but it's mostly a port in name only. Same thing with the other two Double Dragons on the NES.

>>2814907
The PC Engine version (which is basically a remake of the Famicom/NES version) is at least cinematic about it and shows the Lee brothers tending a dying Marian after they return to her home.

>>2814914
She actually gets brought back to life in the NES version though.

The Cyclone Spin Kick in DD III on NES only works when you do a standing/neutral jump. It's a different input method from II

I'm surprised none of the newer Double Dragon games ever attempted to make Marian into a playable, aside from some rejected sprite designs for Double Dragon Advance. I know she was playable in the tutorial for Wander of the Dragons, but I like to pretend that game doesn't exists.

The costume/hair color switch between the Lee brothers is something that I don't think ever had an adequate explanation. I used to think they made Billy a redhead in the NES games because it was easier to reuse the palette data for Jimmy's outfit, but the first NES game didn't even have 2P co-op and Jimmy already had blond hair in that version.

My theory is that they originally meant Billy to be the red guy and Jimmy to be the blue guy, since some of the early promo art actually had them colored that way, but somewhere along the lines they got mixed up (probably when they decided one of them needed to be a bad guy). At any rate, they weren't actually called Billy and Jimmy yet when the first arcade game came out.

>>2817141
The Neo-Geo Double Dragon barely had anything to do the movie though. It feels like that Technos made some random fighting game on the Neo-Geo, added/redesign a few of the fighters at the last minute and they rebranded it Double Dragon before release.

>>2817143
Not counting the competitive fighting games, the only time their fighting styles ever differed was in Super Double Dragon and that one iOS version.

Yes, but those names were made up by Taito for the export versions of the game. They were never actually called Spike and Hammer in Japan and the only time they ever been used again was in the localized Master System version. It's kinda like a Jumpman/Mario situation.

At any rate, the actual game never mentions the Lee brothers' names at any point. Not even before the siblings showdown after two players defeat the final boss together, since the text simply says "1 Player vs. 2 Player".

Kenpo = 拳法 (quánfǎ)
Kung-Fu = 功夫 (gōngfu)
They're both pretty generic terms though.

At any rate, the Japanese manual says their martial art is Sosaiken (Sosetsuken in other versions), which is a combination of various other styles.

Kung fu literally means hard work. But yeah it's incredibly vague in this instance. They couldn't be more vague if they just said martial rts

They're completely different games. The NES version is more of an adaptation than a port, while the SMS version tries to be as close to the arcade it can, but it's pretty gimped overall. Neither are particular great. The arcade version is the way to go.

To add to the post, I prefer the NES version overall, since the combat mechanics are more consistent and the level designs are more varied. The SMS version has some weird hit detection issues (like how you can get jump kicked in mid-air, but the damage doesn't register until you land) and levels are too flat, but it has the benefit of 2P co-op.
