Those are really cool and not that common in 2D games, so I want to see those that actually exist. Preferably in platformers and with sprites, but other sidescrollers and 2.5 also works.

I love this thing. One of my favorite Genesis monsters. Also, do Not-zilla and mecha Not-zilla count? Notzilla does fit on the screen, but his was an impressive sprite for a console game of the time.

I guess this counts as you're standing on the boss
>>2809579
Is he in the background, or is his head really that small?
No mention of Galamoth yet?
>>2809557
Holy balls that boss is hard. Not because any of it's attacks are particularly hard to dodge, it's just so slow and repetitive, and you have to be super consistent; I would argue it's the perfect primer for the incoming difficulty slope.
I would say it does, since it fits the whole screen.
>>2809579
How is he not getting burned by the fire?
>>2809591
Did you not see Aladdin or something? Jafar at that point is a powerful genie who is a total pyromaniac.
>>2809603
Oh that's Jafar? I haven't played the game in years, and haven't seen the movie in decades. I thought it was just a regular big snake.
>>2809579
The game gear Aladdin has a really nice snake sprite.
>>2809618
much better than the tiny one on Genesis
>>2809521
What game is this?
>>2809630
Skyblazer on SNES
>>2809583
Snakes can have fairly small heads in relations to their bodies.
Not sure either that applies to this level of scale though.
>>2809630
Skyblazer. It's nice looking, but really super short and simple, and not all that good.
>>2809521
Dumb question. What is 2.5? Some kind of construct to refer to 2d games that attempted a 3d perspective through layering?
>>2809521
Was so sad he wasn't even so much as referenced in Uprising. Oddly, there wasn't even any mention ofZeuseither. Fantastic game, though.
>>2809557
Oh god damnit I was going to post this
>>2809678
>What is 2.5? Some kind of construct to refer to 2d games that attempted a 3d perspective through layering?
3d graphics, 2d gameplay.
>>2809678
It's a trendy buzzword coined by magazines, not a technical term.
>>2809687
Not quite. 2.5D the technical term refers to shit like the BUILD and Doom engines- looks ostensibly 3D, but actually isn't that at all if you look at the level data.
The more modern usage is the buzzword, and I fucking hate it.

2.5D was used to refer to 3D graphics with gameplay restricted to a two-dimensional plane at least as far back as the N64, and considering we've had way more titles in the 2.5D style of Kirby 64, Street Fighter IV, and Sonic Generations than Doom and Blood at this point, 2.5D referring primarily to the former is the most accepted use of the term.
In fact, I don't even recall "Doom clones" being called 2.5D. I remember first-person shooters like Doom and isometric platformers like Sonic 3D Blast being referred to as "Pseudo-3D".
>>2809835
>2.5D was used to refer to 3D graphics with gameplay restricted to a two-dimensional plane at least as far back as the N64...
I'm calling bullshit. Where's your proof?
>>2809804
Amazing one
>>2809836
Old Tips & Tricks magazines in a landfill somewhere that called Kirby and Goemon 2.5D games when they were new.
You know I'm the guy that asked the question but I didn't think getting an answer would turn into a wankfest. It was easier to google.

the Z plane my fiend the Z plane. in which gaming first had to deal with X + Y snes and some others tinkered with the very begginings of 3d rendering and graphics. so we had the new Z plane. some times called 2.5 because its not true immersive 3D. like mario 64 or diakitana.

>>2809719
2.5D is when you fake 3D using things like raycasting and mode 7.
>>2809521
There's A LOT of these in Contra and Metal Slug.
>>2810295
I think pretty much every boss in Super Contra took up most of the screen
The ORIGINAL screen filling boss. Big enough to be its own stage!
>>2810384
took long enough until someone posted it
also pic related, not really bosses but they're some cool screen-filling enemies.

It reminded me of this stage on Thunder Force III which also is a giant spaceship being the whole level.

Hi guys. Remember me?
It's too bad he's so easy, but considering how hard the rest of the game is it kinda evens out.

2.5D is either
>2D with a illusion of 3D (Like doom 1/2)
>Game with 3D graphics but only uses a 2D environment
>Game that is efectively 2D but has layered sprites to seem like there is depth, like some old SNES games or Terraria.
It isn't a "Real" term, but it's a easily understandable and widespread one so we use it.
Would this count?
The other two final bosses qualify too, but this guy is the largest
Can't believe no one posted this yet.
>>2809521

I disagree
Blood Gear, late PC Engine release by Westone
Very similar to Zelda II but a lot better
This boss is 2 screens tall

Doom clones were called 2.5d in a 1997 (or was it 1998) in our local gaming magazine, and they explained it as the game not storing depth information (on the first level of Doom 2, after the switch moves under ground, you can still press it).
So basically the entire map was 2d in that it could not store any rooms above other rooms. Or enemies above enemies either - you could have a cacodemon 100 feet above you, and it would still block your path and you could still hit it with the chainsaw. Only really noticeable on the last level in Doom 2 though.
Most bosses in Darius Gaiden were screen filling.
Except this motherfucker who was 6 screens long and the entire stage was a fight with him.

So big it can't be shown entirely on one screen.
does this count as retro? this gee is XL boss to rule them all
>>2814280
Not him but I've seen Yoshi Story be called 2.5d in print as well.
>>2818603
Nah.
>>2818605
Pretty sure Yoshi's Story is 100% 2D, it just uses pre-rendered graphics ala DKC.
Screen filling bosses? Pretty much any of the bosses in the Parodius series would work.

I got to the last boss of Shinobi III and never knew you can block. I still don't know how to do it.
>>2818726
Fuck that fucking boss.
>>2821018
Hold down the attack button to block. While blocking, you can still walk and crouchwalk slowly.
There's also a button code that fully enables the six-button controller, giving you different commands for most of the buttons.
I think it was:
A: Block
B: Melee attack
C: Jump
X: Ninjutsu
Y: Shuriken
Z: Shuriken
JIM
>>2818737
But that boss is easy.
>>2821051
6 button mode makes the game play so much better while at the same time making it super easy. Can't go back to the original 3 button control scheme tho. Feels like a big step backwards.
>>2818603
