Honestly, it's the worst console in its generation in terms of being a machine that plays games. What it did well was having such an expansive library that it's easy to overlook faults. That being said, I appreciate from the hardware side the fact that they did such a good job with the backwards compatibility in the front loading model.

I live in a tiny box, and toploaders can be stacked if heat isn't a concern. They're also easier to fit into tight spaces, because you don't have to put your arm in and fiddle with things -- just pull it out the front. If the damn thing was more reliable, the NES front loader would be the poster child for my ideal shape - flat top, front loading, light on front, roughly boxy, heavy enough to stay put despite wire jiggling. Only complaints are that it's a big empty shell and the right-side composite outputs.

The flip top model is inferior to the front loader because it packs a lot more heat into a smaller area, its made out of cheaper and thinner plastic, and its missing hard drive and firewire features.

Problem with the front loader is how dusty it gets inside. Sony apparently didn't fully account for dust build up. The biggest reason the front loaders stop reading disks properly is because dust particles are physically obscuring the lens.

If you open a front loader up, and clean the lens with a Q-Tip (cotton bud, whatever) it should last about 5-10 years before needing another clean unless you live in a dusty hellhole.

My original PS2 died, still have a top loader that works. I will grant that the old PS2 got a LOT more use though, got it the year it launched and was my main squeeze for that generation whereas I got the slim just as that gen was dying down.

You're right about the dust buildup - pulled my ps2 slim out of storage a few months ago, couldn't figure out why it was getting so hot just idling at the menu. Opened it up and found the main fan completely clogged with my old dog's hair, RIP little buddy. Cleaned it out and it's fine now but I expect to have to do the same thing again in a year or two.

The video output was fine, PS2 could output 240p, 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. Both fat and slim models could use an rf adapter, composite, s-video, component, and RGB via scart or VGA cable. And all these cables are not only interchangeable between the PS1/2/3, they're also compatible with all revisions within those three consoles, with the exception of PS1 not outputting component.

The PS1/2/3 are the gold standard of video game consoles, and of the three the PS2 is the best.
