Bayou Billy is overrated as far as difficult games are concerned. Yes, it's harder than its Famicom counterpart, Mad City, but it's still pretty doable if you know what you're doing. Only the driving segments are considerably cheap.

yeah I bought a Silver Surfer cartridge once just in honor of Tim Follin and the game wasn't good or IMMEDIATELY easy but it was easy enough once I got into it a bit and learned its quirks and such (which AVGN maybe didn't bother to do)

I think I ended up beating it during my first play session with it, only took a couple of hours or something

I beat it a couple months ago. drew my own maps.. got to admit I had a good time and I'd even go as far as to call it a "fun" game. definitely could have used a password system, and like all LJN games it's too obtuse. I wouldn't consider it hard though considering you have infinite lives.

what I mean is, usually I use one or two savestates per level (or at built-in checkpoints). for battletoads I had to use savestates alot more than usual, but I didn't use them to a game breaking extent.

I think of savescumming as abusing savestates to nerf the challenge.
