How do they survive the flames?

As I recall, they aren't actually real flames, they just get the sensation of being burned by flames.

I miss Mortal Kombat with those digitized sprites.
There was some sort of goofy charm to that when we see everyone get killed in a gruesome manner.

Here's one you can't answer: why does getting thrown hurt anybody in any fighting game? Not talking about getting slammed into the ground or some kind of hold, just a regular throw. Falling flat on their ass shouldn't do jack to those guys.
