Such a great game to play with a group of people! The best time I ever had playing HotD2 was with a couple buds that aren't into games that much. They of course never heard of HotD so I made them play. We had a blast and played a good chunk of the night(alcohol was also involved). One of my friends actually got thumb blisters from that night.

Green disc and dagger are best. Lance is workable, but I prefer dagger... generally speaking.

Any weapon should be doable, but some are rougher than others... unlike Super GnG which has some god awful throwaway weapons that are utterly worthless.

Of course you can only get the best weapon and enter the final battle on the second round, but it sounds like you know that.

Which part was giving you trouble?

The part with after you climb up the ladder when you see the smaller version of Astaroth. I think I had the green disc too this is the genesis version too btw but I just gave up not bad for my first attempt at the level.
