Depends on whether or not there's a gameplay difference. I'll play whatever I enjoy most, but if the characters play identical I like playing as the guys because I play games to escape reality and imagine being something very different for an hour.

When I was an adolescent I usually picked the girl characters to check them out but now I usually go with the Strong/Slow type characters which usually aren't girls - Unless they're identical like in Sega Bass Fishing then I still go for the girl.

I think it's pretty natural to shy away from picking girls as a kid unless there's some huge in-game difference.

Nope. Thanks to having watched a shit-ton of girly anime in the '80s (Ranma 1/2, Dirty Pair, Urusei Yatsura, Gall Force, Bubblegum Crisis), I ALWAYS picked the cute girl characters!

I prefered to pick the 'strong guys' (characters like Zangief and Raiden/Big Bear) when I was a kid actually. I just got interested to pick the girls in my late teens when I got introduced to KOF and went to revisit my childhood with Streets of Rage.

I really don't like play with girls in vidya because their styles in games usually sucks hard in comparison with guys. The only womyn I actually enjoy playing is Vanessa, from KoF series. Nope, playing as Princess Toadstool in SMB2 showed just how kickass girl characters can be. And in the SNES Power Rangers game I gave everyone a go. Usually the order I did was Jason for Level 1, Billy for Level 2, Zack for Level 3, Kimberly for Level 5, and Trini for Level 5.
