Unstoppable dialogues
>>
>>33550968
When I beat the game in a replay, I set up a timer the moment I beat Kukui because someone told me the ending ate up two hours and I didn't believe them. Except I forget to start it at first, so I actually started it a few minutes late after already reading the dialogue at a brisk pace. I stopped it when the battle with Tapu Koko started, and resumed it once the fight had ended. The timer had been going for well over fifty minutes once it was all over, and as said, I missed a few minutes on top of that.

>>33551013
Just because they aren't cinematic cutscenes, doesn't mean they aren't still cutscenes. Even Red and Green had cutscenes.
>>
>>33551013
>I was right

No you weren't. You were totally btfo. Now stop trying to deny it, the game is too cutscene dependent.
>>
>>33551020
You can skip through text boxes as fast as you want, in no other game are those considered cutscenes.
>>
>>33551002
>its real
i mean theyre not exactly hauling ass through the dialogue, but god fucking damn.
>>
>>33550940
>>33550968

Nope. I just checked, only cutscenes. And no, they didn't pause too long.
>>
>>33551002

>Drifloon: Floo-ooooon

Yeah... sun and moon """"cutscenes""""
>>
>>33551039
No you can't. No matter how fast you click

What a gong show by omhori
>>
>>33550953
This stupid ass argument again. It's funny too because it just shows how familiar with RPGs you idiots actually are.

There are plenty of RPGs out there that don't stop you every five minutes to explain to you arbitrary shit, and carry on fine without overusing cutscenes. Just because some actually do doesn't fucking make it good design when it does nothing but take you out the gameplay.
>>
>>33551039
>>33551072

Those are cutscenes. The length of the individual ones is not as important as how many there are that break up the action. Every other 10 minutes you are met with more dialogue sections.
>>
>>33551109
>cutscenes are ok only if they have titty
Fuck off.
>>
>/vp/ doesn't know what a cutscene is
I'm not even surprise.
>>
>>33551126
Funny comment, since most of the people I see actually defend SM's cutscenes are the types who buy JRPGs for "titty".
>>
>>33551163
Fuck off.
>>
>>33551118
Are your parents siblings?
>>
>>33551195
Yes, why?
>>
>>33551162
Yeah it's pretty astounding how people think it needs to be a cinematic to be a cutscene.
>>
>>33551118

You're mixing unskippable text with cutscenes you nonce. Every Pokémon game has unskippable text. SM only has like 15 minutes worth of cutscenes.
>>
>>33551254
There are quite a few that go for a more cinematic angle and even do a fade in/fade out. It's certainly not 6 hours worth, but one of the complaints is that they turn many spots that should just be text into pseudo cut scenes for no good reason
>>
When I played devil survivor for the time I didn't notice how many cut scenes there were because I sucked into the story. When I played Moon for the first time I didn't really mind she cut scenes too much at first until I realised there wasn't much to eslxplore in between cut scenes but that's beacaue I'm used to having dungeons in my pokemon games. I mean Mt. Moon in blue was a pretty dope dungeon sure it was basic but it was fun and had floors to explore. I think the cut scenes are an issue because it makes replaying the game hard but if you're into the story I don't see it being a problem
>>
>>33551254
>>33551331
I thought the complaint was the absolutely ridiculous amount of unnecessary dialogue. It's not cutscenes, but the dialogue bloat in the game is real. Especially the first island.

More the pacing and the unneeded cutscene transitions. Sometimes you get the chance to move... One step then bam more dialogue or cutscene. Just string it all together you fucks

>20 hours of cutscenes in a 200-hour game is the same as 6 hours of cutscenes in a 10-hour game
People who use this argument can go get fucked.
>>
>>33551210
It does though. Dialogue you can flash through is not a cutscene. You talking and the other characters moving in BW for example by your logic is also a cutscene.
>>
>>33550901
Yep, definitely. I like the cutscenes and story, way more immersive than it used to be. I mean, in and on itself it's just a simple, not too interesting game.
>>
>>33550901
6 hours?
I'm sure 1 quarter of it is just the ending credits alone

Pokemon was great precisely because it wasn't like all other (j)RPGs. Keyword: was.
>>
>>33550901
Now add all of the "fade to black" moments like when you accidentely run into a trial gate, will be 4 hours of non-gameplay segments easily

>>33550901

>>
>>33554704
I rather watch goku vs frieza fight twice than watch that garbage from sun and moon
>>
>>33550930
It's not. With the cutscenes I marathoned Moon in 8 hours. I didn't have 2 hours only of gameplay.
>>
The problem isn't just the cutscenes, it's those tiny cutscenes that slow the game down.

>Go up to left hand side of roadblock
>Screen goes black
>Pause
>Cutscene of you standing in the middle of the roadblock talking to the person blocking it
>Screen goes black
>Pause
>You're now 2 steps away from the roadblock in the middle of it.

Or even fucking worse in Hau'oli City:

>See some grass behind a fence
>Walk towards gate
>'Press A to enter!!' icon
>Press A
>Screen goes black
>Pause
>You're now on the other side of the gate

This is the kind of shit that grinds my gears about S/M, not just the cutscenes but how much you get railroaded by EVERYTHING. It's not just the plot or the region or the order you do things, it's just the fact that if you make the tiniest step out of line you get an unnecessary cutscene telling you that you can't do it. You must stay within that route or that city, sometimes even just that tiny stretch of ground or else you get a mini non-cinematic cutscene. People should forget about the plot-based cutscenes because at least they have some value and focus on these absolutely inexcusable ones instead. We never had them before and they add absolutely nothing to the game.
>>
>>33551873
With a game with as little story as this it is
>>
I'm hoping to God that the story just goes fucking drastically off the rails when we get to Aether Paradise, becoming entirely new and more Ultra Dimension focused rather than Lillie's family issues focused.

I want Necrozma to go on a full blown annihilation rape crusade of the Ultra Dimension. I want Necrozlunala to fuck the slut roach!

Lesbian monster doublerape!
>>
>>33552763
>Comparing Xenoblade cutscenes to SM

That's like comparing Indiana Jones to Jack and Jill.
>>
>>33557210
if there's one thing that went drastically off the rails it was your post
>>
>>33552690
Game since the NES have had cutscenes where you still need to manually advance them, but otherwise still have no input. Hell, there are games with cutscenes that have more input than that, too. A cinematic is a sub-type of cutscene that automatically advances.
>>
>>33551254
someone with serious autism should make videos for each set of games showing every cutscene + forced dialogue
starting with BW was when they started over doing the text box spam, I believe
>>
DESU Im replaying it right now

I should be writing my thesis, but eh
>>
>>33557210
>>33557265

Jesus christ you're right.
>>
>>33550953
Xenoblade Chronicles is my favorite game of all time and the 'all cutscenes' video for it is 10 hours long, and I still think SM has issues with it. The problem isn't that cutscenes are bad, it's how the game uses them, works them into gameplay and worldbuilding, and at the end of the day just how good they are.
>>
>>33550940
Just any parts with dialogue
>>
>>33550953
At least in other rpg's the cutscenes can be interesting. There is literally nothing interesting about characters standing around waving their hands while "get back in the bag" appears onscreen silently.
>>
>>33550901
It's not like movie-games are new to things published by Nintendo. There were three hours of cutscenes in the M*tr*id game that shant be mentioned Mother M
I'm sure weeb-shit Xenoblade had a lot of cutscenes too
>>
>m-muh bag memes
fuck off all of you

The best way to compare lengths of a Pokémon game is to compare glitchless TASes (or glitchless speedruns if there aren't any to compare).

Alpha Sapphire
https://www.speedrun.com/run/8y8wprdy
Sun
https://www.speedrun.com/run/oy2r807m

And so on. Of course new strategies are still being thought of and these runs will improve more and more with time, but it gives you an idea of how many required cutscenes are in each game. In Pokémon's case, "required cutscenes" include any dialogue that the player is forced to go through, except in battles. Talking to Brock and having him introduce himself is considered a cutscene, but the actual battles and overworld traversal are not. In Pokémon speedruns, battle animations are typically turned off anyway. These should not be seen as examples of the average player's time, but of the impact of cutscenes in each game. For example, how much regular gameplay (defined in this case as player agency) does Sun and Moon have in its main story compared to Red when both games are played with only their absolute minimums of regular gameplay?
>>
>>33559721
>Sun beaten in 5 hours
Literally how
>>
>>33559739
I didn't actually watch the video so I can't confirm if he uses glitches or not. It probably says somewhere. Still, it's well over an hour longer than the next longest game.
>>
>>33559739
In case you didn't realize, Alola is a small as fuck region
>>
>>33559760
>>33559799
But just getting your starter, beyond the 40 cutscenes, takes like half an hour alone, even when mashing through text boxes.
