Your all wrong
What decides a new gen is new starters
Gamefreak said they are the face of their generation
>>

starters aren't any different from any other pokemon. fuck off with your headcanon nonsense

>>33549205
>entirely new region
>new Pokemon including starters
>new mechanics that defy said generation that is exclusive to system/pair of games
This is what defies a new generation. It takes more than new Pokemon. Going by that logic, ORAS was gen 7. USUM is 7.5 period.

New Pokemon means a new generation. New forms are new Pokemon. Hence Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is generation 12. Also, since Pokemon Mystery Dungeon has a bunch of gen 4 pokemon, it's generation 3.5. This is objective fact :~)

yeah and then once they start having mid-gen starters you'll just move goalposts to saying a new gen requires new box legendaries right?

>"I think they're absolutely necessary to the Pokemon games," he said. >"Personally, I think they're the ones that should be on the packaging. They're really the face of that generation, and I think even as designers, they feel a bit more special to us than some of the other Pokemon."
>>
>>33549392
The common sense is "new pokemon = new gen" according to all the fucktards in OP's image
>>
>>33549416
Yeah? What about it?

That doesn't stop them from having mid-gen starters.
>>

>UltrSuUltMoo

>>
>>33549427
Not that guy but yeah for now , so till then currently new starters new region is more or less the norm not trying to argue one way or another clearly it is no longer just new Pokémon that defines a new gen. The rules have changed and some people were wrong and some right
>>
>>33548019
There's so much debate over what constitutes a generation and I don't understand why, it's perfectly clear when a new generation begins, anybody trying to argue it is doing it solely for argument's sake. The biggest difference between generations is the major changing or expanding of game mechanics. Look at, say, Gen 4 vs. Gen 5. Many abilities were added and/or modified. I'm not saying a handful of abilities, I'm saying a whole lot of them were changed and added. Gen 5 vs 6. Megas were added, 6 vs. 7 Z-moves were added etc.
>>
>>33549472
Just like I was making stuff up when I said nothing was stopping them from having mid-gen Pokemon before the direct right?
>>
>>33549418
Yes they were wrong but I feel like everyone is just trying to be right not to get to the bottom of what defines a new gen but just to brag to the other side that they are idiots for being wrong
>>
>>33549489
This is exactly what 6.5fags were arguing and yet they were laughed at constantly with the "new pokemon = new gen" meme that turned out to be false.
>>
>>33549489
I'm with you this is a dumb argument just for the sake of being right or wrong everyone knows what a new gen is even though the traditional guidelines have been shifted
>>
>>33549499
But the the points people are making contradict each other and will be too stubborn to give up their opinions no matter how much it doesn't help resolve the issue
>>
>>33549489
Of course everybody understands what defines a new generation. The problem is we had clear rules that made it easy to give a definition that have been thrown away.
>>
>>33549539
The "rules" are the mechanical differences between each generation.

"new pokemon = new gen"fags were always retarded.
>>
>>33549477
Question for everyone, if starters and region determine when a new gen begins, then why are Heartgold-SoulSilver/FireRed-LeafGreen considered gen IV/III? both set of games happen on an entirely different region than Ruby-Sapphire/Pearl-Platinum and have new starters, those things don't matter at all, because if they did, then they would have been a different generation, but guess what, they're not, what determines a region is solely the existence of new pokemon.
>>
If they introduce new starters with a new pokedex, then its a new gen. If not, then its not a new gen. Simple as that.

I highly doubt USUM will have new starters so it won't be gen 8.
>>
>>33549557
Yeah I'm with you buddy not trying to argue that new starters and region are the only things that defines a new gen I feel like remakes should always be lumped with whatever games the current generation is in. But to be honest everyone know a new gen when they see it
>>
>>33549556
That's not true and you know for a fact that no one has ever said mechanical differences were more important than new pokemon to define a generation.
>>
>>33549557
But the way Remakes aren't a new gen not a new region with new Pokémon they are remakes with the current gen mechanics
>>
>>33549570
>MUH STARTERS

so a game that has new mechanics and can't battle with the previous game, 200 new pokemon, a new region, and is on a brand new console, but decides to use kanto starters instead of new starters doesn't count as a new gen?

epic, simply epic
>>
Checklist of what makes a new generation
>New Region
>New Gym Leaders/Trial Captains with no returning ones
>New Starters
>New Protagonists
>New Champion
>New Mechanics/Gimmick
>New Regional Pokedex/50+ New Pokemon
Only when all these are met is there a new generation
>>
>>33549570
They had rowlet, litten, qnd popplio in all the trailers. I wouldn't rule out alternate evos but that wouldn't make usm gen 8. First stage starters are the real focus
>>
>>33549621
No but come on, that kind of game will never happen. Gamefreak will never reuse starters in a new generation.
>>
>>33549639
Gamefreak will also never introduce new pokemon in the middle of a generation.
>>
>>33549639
yeah just like they will never introduce new pokemon mid-gen, or get rid of gyms, or make legendaries that evolve

epic meme my friend
>>
>>33549645
>>33549646
If you want to give gamefreak too much credit then be my guest. I can guarantee that everytime they start a new generation, they will introduce new starters.
>>
>>33549621
Everyone seems to be forgettting the reason we are arguing including you as of now this along with other things defines a new gen until gamefreak throw a curveball again. Who knows we might get to a point where arguing what defines a gen is a moot point. Let's just try to enjoy the new things and hope GF delivers in every new game
>>

You honestly think they would add new mechanics, 200 new pokemon, a new region, and put it on a brand new console and be all like "lol kids here's Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott again, have fun"

You're either delusional or being a contrarian.

I think generations are defined by core games. Any time a main series Pokemon game that isn't a sequel, update, remake, or arguably whatever the fuck the gamecube games were, it's a new generation.
>>
>>33549849
Yeah, that's 4chan in a nutshell, I see it on every board, on /co/, on /mlp/, on /tv/, on /v/, and /vp/ where they endlessly hate every single videogame/tv show yet they can't stop watch/play it, they just like being contrarians who shit on everything but they secretly enjoy said thing.
>>
>>33549849
>You're either delusional or being a contrarian.

Yes just like thinking they would add mid-gen Pokemon or getting rid of gyms was delusional or contrarian :)
>>
>>33549320
What new pokemon did HGSS have that wasn't in Platinum? Spiky ear pichu is still pichu and doomed to never leave so it doesn't count.
>>
>>33549253
>starters aren't any different from any other pokemon

Wrong, they are different because they are marketed differently and because unlike most Pokemon they will always have relevance to the series no matter how long has passed since their game.
>>
>>33550954
All the more reason to start making more sets of them and start introducing them MID-GEN

Nobody said there can't be multiple sets of starters as the "face of the gen" per gen

Imagine if they made a gen 8 game have the typical grass/fire/water starters, and then made the sequel games have a new set of steel/fighting/fairy starters. That would be fun.

>>33551154
There's no reason to assume they won't. Gamefreak likes to do remakes because they turn a profit. They've been doing them at a steady rate, and clearly have no higher goal with them than making a quick buck. Back when all we had were FRLG and HGSS, you could argue that they only remade the games to bring the originals into the (then) present, considering they were the only games "locked off" by the hardware shift. But then they went and made ORAS for essentially no reason.

It's not about patterns. They made FRLG one gen, HGSS the next, skipped a gen and made sequel versions instead of a third version, then made ORAS in a gen with neither third versions nor sequels. For basically no reason at that, they certainly didn't have any strong purpose driving their development like the previous two remakes seemed to. Maybe they'll make DP remakes next. Maybe following the next main entry as part of the next generation. Maybe the generation later. The longer it takes, the more likely it becomes, and it isn't unreasonable to guess that it's a likely occurrence next gen.

>>33551244
The first post was obvious sarcasm. I'm not one for calling people autistic for every little thing, but for you to actually be unsure warrants the response you got. No, "everyone here is so dumb and says such dumb things I couldn't be sure" is not a reason.
>>
>>33551287
>They said they are interested in more remakes

There are games that exist other than DP, Sinnohfetus.

>>33551298
>There's no reason to assume they won't.
The fact that FRLG exists says otherwise.

It would be a dream if we got to the point where we were essentially going, "This $5 DLC that adds 100+ new Pokemon is CLEARLY a new gen!" "No it lacks a region, the $10 story expansion with 30+ hours of content defines it!" "lol fgts giving gamefreak money when all this should be free"
>>
>>33549910
Honestly, at this point, I'm pretty sure Pokemon is just a catch all term in that universe for, "Thing that can fight but isn't human"

Because otherwise, calling an Ultra Beast a Pokemon is like discovering some silicon based life form discovered on another planet an animal

>>
>>33549618
Don't know about them but I did and I'm not the only one. What defines it is using a different engine.

Even whether or not they can communicate like others have suggested should define it can't be used because Gen 1 and 2 can to some extent back and forth. They probably could've even battled were it not for the engine change which modified stats.
>>
>>33551529
>Implying remakes are not part of the Gen they appear in.
All that matters is whether or not they're basically the same under the hood. None of the other shit - region, Pokémon, moves, abilities, etc. - matters.
>>
How about new generation = major revision to the game engine
