There was a recent thread on how official protagonist designs use a pool of colors that allows each article of clothing to pop out without being camouflaged by an adjacent one, but didn't use so many that it becomes one huge mess of colors. I tried to follow those "rules", and ended up with these.

Any suggestions?

It was this thread. Basically, it talks about how the non-custom and default protagonists use a combination of about 6 or so colors, and works around that so everything stands out, whereas NPCs use less colors to blend in with the crowd more. The OP used Rosa as the main example there, and you can see that theory play out pretty well with her design.

That 6 color thing sound interesting. My character has almost that many (almost because I don't know if I should count the flower colors in the patterned cargo shorts). I think I'll play around a bit, perhaps with hair color too since I chose the tan boy and giving him my brown hair makes them blend together somewhat. Will post results later.

Huh. This works pretty well. The hat is Beige Athletic, don't know if you guys can see it very well, tried to get a good angle with color. I can't believe I actually got use out of the yellow contacts though. I'm definitely going to play around more with this in USUM.

My problem (no real problem) is the SM trainer are too childish, so you can't have ""mature"" clothes on them.

Don't know if I should argue or agree. While. It's true western male fashion doesn't include skirts, dresses, accessories, etc. there are still plenty of options to choose from. Nowadays even colors are being more available to men, like pink and purple (tfw I outgrew my favorite black/purple striped shirt). Yiu shouldn't perceive men's and women's fashion as a hierarchy with women's at the top with the most stuff. Both categories have their own differences and options not available to the other (though it is true women's have more). If you visit clothing stores and boutiques regularly I'm sure you'll see just how diverse men's fashion can be, despite it seeming limited at first. So don't be afraid to try something new, and go out there! Male fashion can be just as good as female! As long as you're not discouraged, you can most certainly find something if you try hard enough.

A light blue top combined with a light blue bottom and a light blue bag is a poor combination, despite you giving that a higher rating. Remove the outlines, and everything blends into one incoherent mess. An actual trainer design, minor NPC or major, uses more colors than just two.

SM characters are short enough so they can fit in 4 screenshots, at the cost of constantly moving around. You'll have to do more editing to make them look good.
